Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and host Kevin O’Connor build a console table using a maple slab with a live edge on it.

Time: 2 days
Cost: $300
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Building a Live Edge Slab Table:
Track saw
Hammer
Chisel
Grinder
Palm sander
Clamps
Router
Drill
Shopping List:
Live edge slab
Hairpin legs
80-120 grit sandpaper
320 grit sandpaper
Wood glue
Scrap wood to use for rails and jig
Wood screws
Cheap paintbrush
Rags
Amber shellac
Tung Oil
Steps:
1. Before doing any work, determine the orientation of the table. Decide whether the live edge should face up or face down, see which face of the slab will look nicest on top, etc. For decorative tables, Tom likes having the live edge face up so it can be really celebrated. For more functional tables, like a dining room table, Tom likes the live edge down so there’s no gap between the flat surface of the table and the person sitting at the table. Mark the sides in the middle that will need to be cut.
2. Lay the slabs on a workbench with the sides you plan to cut facing the outside of the table. Cut straight edges on both sides of each slab with the track saw.
3. Put the slabs back in the correct orientation to check the size.
4. Remove the bark from the live edge using a hammer and chisel.
5. Once the bark is off, smooth out the edges with a grinder.
6. Sand the live edges with the palm sander. Do a few passes, starting with the rough sandpaper and work up to a smoother one.
7. Generously apply a coat of wood glue to both straight edges of the slabs and clamp the pieces together to dry.
8. Once the glue has dried, cut the rough edges on the short sides of the table with a track saw.
9. Sand the top of the table until the glue joint is perfectly blended.
10. Flip the table upside down and mark the desired location for the legs.
11. Cut two pieces of scrap wood to equal size and height and clamp them to the workbench around the tabletop.
12. Make a jig using the scrap wood to hold a router that’s wide enough to slide across the two rails.
13. Determine the appropriate depth to set the router by placing the jig over the four marks for the legs. Lower the router to the deepest point on the four marks.
14. Use the router to cut out four even sections based on the marks.
15. Drill holes in the table for the four legs. Then, screw the legs into the drilled holes with the wood screws.
16. Flip the table right side up on its legs. Apply a coat of amber shellac with the paintbrush to seal it. Let the shellac dry.
17. Lightly sand the table with the 320 grit sandpaper.
18. Apply three coats of tung oil to the table with a rag. Be sure to put the rag in a bucket of water when you’re finished. Let it dry overnight.
19. Apply three more coats of tung oil.
Resources:
Tom recommends locating a local lumber yard or mill to find live edge slabs. A quick Internet search should help you identify the one closest to you. Give them a call, talk about the project you’d like to do, and see what types of wood they have. Tom and Kevin used a slab of maple from The Rustic Wood Shop (therusticwoods....
For a more modern look, Tom ordered hairpin metal legs to attach to the bottom of the table. He used the 48” I-Semble Hairpin Table Legs, available at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware (www.rockler.com/).
To adhere the two boards together, Tom used wood glue, manufactured by Gorilla Glue (www.gorillatou....

Spend extra to get book matched planks. Cut off book matched portion. Make it look like two unrelated planks. Hmmmm!

Nick G perhaps it did not cost more, however, he did purposely by consecutive cuts on purpose. It just seems odd, not bad, that he did not take advantage of that match. Otherwise, the episode was very good and useful.

I like how they simplified everything from the router jig to just leveling where the legs go. Shame that they didn't use the rest of the slab they cut off though. Goes to show you don't need to entirely spend hours flattening or filling all the voids to get good results.

Man he really left almost nothing of that 2nd piece on. Surprised he didn't just use one slab as his tabletop, except for the slope going the other way on the other side it looks to be almost the same width as a single plank.
@eserflin

I was thinking the exact same thing. Waste of time and material. But I guess the point was the educational aspect for us. Still, I totally agree. Basically the same size as a single original slab.

With such new pieces of wood, I'd be concerned of after leveling the leg holes with the router, that the tabletop would warp, and wobble in just a few months. Is 2 slabs the way they have it (one flipped) enough to combat the warping issue?

I like to leave the bark and pour epoxy over it to seal it, especially into the gap between the bark and the wood to glue it on. Comes out beautifully. Without the bark, it’s kinda not really a live edge anymore. Though I probably wouldn’t do it for something like a dining table.

Routing only where the legs are is a smart move. I would have routed flat the whole thing top and bottom wasting lots of hours.
@dtom1145
@dtom1145 6 лет назад
Its a question of craftsmanship. And if the wood is not dry it will still warp and then not sit flat. I would be the time it took to fiddle with the recesses would be the same to flatten the bottom, which would also look more professional.
@KewlCrayon
@KewlCrayon 6 лет назад
I would've just sent it through the thickness planer a couple of times. The routed slots for the legs might make it sit level, but now you got a cupped table that will shed spills and cause things to roll/slide down.
@johnsmith-wc8gs
@johnsmith-wc8gs 4 года назад
@@KewlCrayon a thickness planer will not take the curse out of it. Assuming the planer is wide enough (most are 12") it will only flatten the surface. It won't take the warp out

Question: Isn't the flat glue joint in the center liable to split and fail? Why not use dowels or biscuit joints in addition to the glue?
@RoastBeefSandwich
@RoastBeefSandwich 6 лет назад
Not as long as the wood is dry to start out with. If it's wet, yes the wood will twist as it dries and might cause splitting - just not likely at the glue joint. Wood glue is stronger than the wood around it.

I am a fan of the show but this segment was a total disappointment. I design and build furniture including designs with live edge lumber and this piece might as well have come from Ikea. No thought as to the function or design of the base - just buy some common metal bits so it looks like every other piece out there. You lost the beauty of the book matched faces by joining the slabs together then not even showing the most interesting face. Take the time to make sure the moisture content of the wood is low otherwise your trick to recess the leg flanges will not hold as the slab will still warp as it dries. Take the time to flatten both sides of the slab, show some craftsmanship! The finish did not look close to anything natural. Guys, you could have done a whole lot better.

D Tom, not everyone has the same taste. I think Tom S./TOH was keeping it simple because it's meant to be a DIY project where the hobby builder can customize it to their liking. Anyone who's that worried about warping can either 1) buy dried lumber and/or 2) select a species and cut with less warping, and/or 3) reset the legs after however many years it takes the slab to completely dry all the way through.
