Back in 85 I got to take classes with Bob Brozman at the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. Didn’t know him really, but I thought he was the coolest and craziest player (and person) I had ever seen. Thirty years later, I introduced my kids to his music when they saw one of his albums and asked who on earth this was. I decided to see if we could catch a live show, and that’s when I found out that cancer had taken him only months before. Really bummed me out. It’s not often you get to “share” things you enjoy with your kids, and he was such a gracious and enthusiastic ambassador for that early 20th century blues/jazz music. I guess in a rambling way, I’m agreeing that you should say something to the person you’re a fan of, and should go to those live shows that pop up, while you can.
I was sitting in front of the T.V. the night "All in the Family" aired, that show shocked the nation, and tv would never be the same. Was about to watch Spinal Tap again and saw Rob Reiner... made me think of that.
I first heard Harry when he was with "The Credibility Gap" back in the early 70's when FM radio was in it's infant stages. They would do commercials (like Jack Poet Chevrolet among others) in the morning hours and it was the best.
the connection with Mel Blanc was classic - I remember seeing Mel Blanc on the Tonight Show and Johnny Carson realized that Mel didn't have a lot to say (I think Jack Benny was also there) ... so Johnny started asking about characters and the voices started pouring out (all in character) ... great!
I WAS AT A BLUES FEST IN RITZVILLE WA. CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE, THE FAMOUS HARMONICA PLAYER. AFTER THE GIG, I WALKED UP AND SAID. “ MR. MUSSELWHITE, YOU MAKE GREAT MUSIC.” HE SAID, “YOU HAVE VERY GOOD TASTE, TURNED AND WALKED AWAY! I’VE PLAYED HARP FOR DECADES AND PLAYED AT MANY A FESTIVAL, BUT THAT WAS THE BEST COMEBACK EVER! THANKS JOE AND HARRY!
What a great interview Joe! Spent many hours in the late 60’s listening to the Firesign Theater. I’ve enjoyed all of the interviews and really look forward to each new one. Just one suggestion Joe and I mean this with the best intentions. Please do all of us a big favor and stop saying “RIGHT!” after ever sentence your guest utters. 🙏
This isn't exactly related but my parents went to see Cream with Country Joe and the Fish in 1968 @ Stony Brook U. There was some kind of row with promomter and when Cream came on stage , Eric said F**k You and they left. I was 8. I wasn't there. It may have been late '67, and I would have been 7.
Yes, very nice!!! Totally agree! Had to quickly translate "Legal" from Portuguese, using the Google Translator. And when I found out that it means "nice", I had to reply right away! Sim, muito bom!!! Concordo plenamente! Tive que traduzir rapidamente "Legal" do português, usando o Google Translator. E quando descobri que significa "legal", tive que responder na hora!
