No one who has lived through the '50s and be aware of the pressures placed on media to reject even the slightest recognition of Black people on television can fail to recognize the significance of a Annie Ross, a White woman, welcoming Joe to their already integrated vocal group. Bravo to Annie, to Hugh Heffner, who produced it all -- to the musicians, it was all very natural. If you hadn't lived through these terrible times, you had no idea of the nastiness of the views and actions of those who lived in the segregationist world in those days. Aside from all that, this is wonderful music, and thankfully, I got to hear all of these wonderful artists in their prime.

Hi Guy; Kurt Elling did a similar show here in Portland, OR last year w/ Hendrick's daughters & Kevin Burke (who I saw w/ JH back in the 70s). Nancy King joined them for a couple songs. The Portland State University jazz choir joined for the finale... a great, great tribute.

Brilliant. The interplay between Williams and Hendricks is a treat, but it's all good, and the visual enjoyment of this LH&R performance solidifies that they were not merely Magnificent Singers, but that they were also Great Entertainers. (Basie and Green in the rhythm section? HUGE.) Addendum, one year later: I just found out that this was from Hugh Hefner's FIRST TV series "Playboy's Penthouse," in 1959. (His second, "Playboy After Dark," would be on about ten years later.) It's hard to that believe broadcast television was ever this hip.
