Let's all appreciate that that woman was honest in saying that she wasn't sure if that was the guy that stole it. She said she wasn't paying attention and couldn't tell so they let him go. Plus he wasn't wearing what she described. Oh and BTW people, when out In public, be it at night or during the day, don't keep your eyes glued to your phone. You never know what someone may do. Be careful out there.

A phone is unique to the user contains personal info and such and identifiable.. Dollars are all the same would be near impossible and not worth the effort to figure out who stole one dollar.

Sharing personal experience. I once found a cellphone at a gas station. It was unlocked. So I called their Mom. Owner lived in LA, 4 hours away. So I paid and sent them their cellphone. The owner couldn't believe it. Then I once lost mine in Mexico, someone found it, knew it was mine. Then asked me how much would I give them for it.

He said he found it and didn’t make up any excuse cause he knew and they knew he was gonna keep it. Cops didn’t have to let him go, but they did and his (at least semi) honesty helped with that

For those unaware, in most states there is a specific value of an item at which point you are legally required to turn the item (cash, jewelry, phone, whatever) in to the police. If you don't, you can be charged with theft. So, while $1 is below that threshold (generally), a phone will be over it (generally). "Finders, keepers" is not a legal theory.

it still doesnt prove he took it, just because it seems like it he did it, doesnt add up as proof...its not illegal to walk with something under your armpit. the minute we start allowing things like that as prob cause to arrest and charge someone, you go down a very very bad, slippery slope...where does it stop. for example"oh your acting nervous and shaking, you must be guilty"..its his word against hers, with no other witnesses and he not being able to id..

Beyond reasonable doubt. He wasn't matching the description. It's easy to watch from the sidelines, but the bottom line is that this isn't evidence for court case, it's entertainment, and as such, they might play up certain factors.

Lost is one thing but if it is reported stolen than the imei would be in the carrier database and possibly even the police database as stolen. and possession of stolen property is it’s self a crime even if you did not steal the item in question.

SCENARIO.....! Guy: finds another phone soon after being released (remembers what the cop told him about taking it to a police station); heads that way. Cop: Gets a new call about a stolen phone and comes across him again. Guy: says he on his way to drop the phone off to the station. Cop: dont believe him and arrest him for possession of stolen goods Guy: gets 1-2 years for attempting to be a good samaritan. W. T. F...??? Lol

Nice hypothetical. Great job creating a ridiculous scenario just to try to rag this situation. It depends on which way you're walking. It's pretty obvious if you're in the direction of the station or not. Creative, to say the least from you.

Rick Felt hmmmm.... 🤔 world ending (not in mans hand) vs a cop determining someone’s life ending in prison (mans hand) NOT THE SAME. Point is that it is very much possible and the guy can go to prison based off a cop’s assumption.

I love phone thieves, one time 2 phone thieves walked up to me, kicked me in the balls and picked the phone out of my pocket, I had to tape my sac up to make it back home

you do realize that there is probably 20 minutes or more of footage that we do not see, the cop could have said it was a she off camera.

For sure that shady dude stole that phone. No way did he not know it was a females phone. Referring to the owner of the phone as mamma. He's been around the block to know that description of a person could lead you to being stopped and searched.
