In general, the system was working fine. That's great if you are not personally responsible for when it isn't working well generally. People were jailed, their reputations ruined, and in some cases, they lost their lives. Maybe, just a thought, don't talk in general terms.

Gareth maybe forgot to mention some VERY important information about the Horizon system for which he was the System Architect relating to the frequent failures of the local database on the Post Office installed computer at the Branch and the central Mainframe Database whereby strangely transactions that failed to communicate over the network were marked as Completed instead of being flagged as Pending which is a fatal design error in an accounting system like this but hopefully the Inquiry can help him to remember this as it is central to the issues

If the term "distinguished engineer" didn't demand/require/indicate further education (or even come with higher pay), it was pretty much meaningless.

The roles of a System Architect can vary widely in nature between organisations. At a miniumim they are usually involved in the early design stages with support for system implemention. However they may have little knowledge of day to day software defects or problems, providing occassional consultancy where asked with reference to agreed system specifications.

Gareth Jenkins is less an expert and more a company man ready to lie and misdirect as innocent people are sent to prison. This creature is playing dumb, he needs to go to prison!
