After meeting Ben's sister and simply mentioning I was a big fan he actually endorsed/autographed a copy of his book and she got it to me through a mutual friend. What awesome people those Spies' are!
The 2002 Imola, race 2, I believe between Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss is in that category. There have been others I'm sure, but this 2009 video is definitely among the very top!
@@fmkafer Both Imola legs were fantastic- remember that Haga was in that battle as well. There have been lots of amazing races, but I was talking about the individual ride that Ben did here. As a rookie, on a less than ideal bike in its debut year, completely dominated the entire grid. It is a masterclass in controlled aggression at Assen. IMO, Colin were evenly matched in 2002, and were on the same level, more or less. No on was within a mile of Ben in 2009. He was so good that Yamaha cancelled his second year contract for WSBK and moved him into MotoGP.
I was lucky to see him in AMA superbikes before he left for WSBK. He was fun to watch and even in moto GP, his first season on a factory Yamaha, he had some good showings, some podiums, and a win. Shame his career was cut short by the shoulders injury
BS, Not taking anything away from Spies, but the reason he got passed Haga, was that Haga had a slide and had to back off the throttle, Haga actually got kicked out of the seat. You can see the slow mo at 1:06:13. It wasn't the pass of the decade, it was a standard opportunistic passing.
@@raynic1173 its hard to see, but that was him getting stood up by spies on the way by. Its just hard to tell when spies is in front of haga at that camera angle
“Don’t have to worry about him now because he’s “checked” (Checa) out.” Green was such a cool and funny commentator. I still remember watching this race from back in the day. Great times
Ot seems like the, Motorcycles of the early 2000's look the best. Especially the "Yamaha" & the "Suzuki" ! Wow, that front on the Yamaha is so beautiful. The wide mid section, the unique vent holes 🕳 by the number of ben spies (Motorcycle Is Complete Marvelous)
Can't help but hear. The commentators keep saying that yamaha. Is a real easy bike to ride. That's bullshit! Because yamaha never won a Sbk championship till Spies. Ben was very very talented.

You can see the slow mo at 1:06:13. Spies also references this in the post race interview, and finally that's same reason why Haga got by Spies in the first place, it called being there for that one little mistake your opponent makes.
Harusnya dia gausa pindah ke moto GP . Kasian sering cidera jadinya pensiun dini .
what a horrible year for Haga. he was with Yamaha for years and didn't get the championship. Spies arrives and he takes it on 1st try. Haga wanted to win with Yamaha as a Japanese. sad.
@@endlesstwisties i'm not talking about the bike itself. if you look at the others with the same bike in 2009 and after were nowhere. Ben is the key. not the bike.
@@endlesstwisties even Ben said that between the r1 and M1 there's an entire world. like going from GT touring to F1. so don't talk bullshit with me LUL.
