John Pizzarelli and Ken Peplowski share a long history, not only with The Jazz Cruise, but also with John's father, the late great jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. Bucky, who died at the age of 94 earlier this year, had a remarkable career initially as a session guitarist (how about Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" for starters?!), but later as one of the great mainstream jazz guitarists of his generation, often appearing alongside legends such as Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, George Barnes and George Van Eps, as well as younger players such as Howard Alden, Frank Vignola and, of course, his son John. Bucky was a voluble personality with an easy smile and quick wit.
Anyone who has sailed on The Jazz Cruise knows that when you put John and Ken together, anything goes, but this conversation is all about Bucky and his life and legacy. They've got stories that will make you laugh and perhaps even cry.
