PREVIEW: The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League, also known as IPL 2024, is set to begin today, which is considered one of the biggest extravaganzas of cricket. The tournament will commence with a thrilling match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (CSK vs RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, at 8:00 PM (IST), where the defending champions will play against RCB.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) will enter it's 17th year in 2024 as the world's most popular franchise cricket league keeps improving with every passing season.
The inaugural IPL was in 2008 and was won by Rajasthan Royals (RR), but they have not won a single title since then.
In 2023, the-then defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) took on the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the final, with the latter winning their fifth IPL title, a record they share with their biggest rivals, Mumbai Indians (MI).
The Gujarat Titans are one of the latest teams to join the IPL. Despite this, they managed to clinch the IPL title in 2022. They are known for big victories, having defeated the Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in the 2022 IPL finals held in Ahmedabad.
It appears that the Mumbai Indians have changed leadership, with Hardik Pandya being named as the new captain of the team. Nevertheless, the squad is expected to perform at a high level, as they have already won the IPL trophy five times, making them the second team to do so after CSK.
The teams are split into two groups of five and each play 14 group games. They play the teams in their group once and the other group twice (home and away). The results form one table.
