I will first deconstruct Shadow's - Mutual Slump and after, if there's time, I might try a few sample mashups with Mutual Slump.

Missed the live stream but to answer the question of how Shadow slowed down his samples, He ran his turn tables direct into the mpc sampler. Dj turntable like the technique 1200 have pitch control to speed up and slow down the record while sampling.

Hey Roger, I'm sure you're right about that one. Half of the tracks are out of tune for this reason, which is pretty neat and part of the sound. The technique that puzzles me and that I think I was referring to is the non-destructive time stretching (stretching without changing the pitch) that Shadow achieved. It's my opinion that he did some clever crossfading, starting the sample and ending it later (a tail at the beginning and end of each sample) and combining the two together in order to convincingly "stretch" the sample without changing the pitch. A similar process to how he would beautifully combine drum samples by including a portion of the sample before the hit, so that the hits would crossfade and blend together convincingly.

@@KarlBoltzmann you might be over complicating it. I was using similar sampling and looping techniques in the 90’s. Record your sample directly off of the turntable with the pitch slider to regulate the tempo(pitch does not matter at this point), load that sample into the mpc. Now you’ve got a sample that’s in time, but not in tune. Pretty sure the mpc had a pitch alter function. Adjust pitch accordingly, done. 🤙 At least that’s how I would’ve done it back then.

@@suspect86 For sure! Later samplers did, but my understanding (or what I have been told) is that the MPC 60 he was using didn't have the time stretching feature. I think that came about on either later, or perhaps more expensive samplers. Which is to say that I think he might have done some fancy production in order to do some of those things. Or I'm over thinking it and he had some other, much simpler way of doing that.
