Live Surf Cam: Manhattan Beach, California 

Grew up jumping off the Manhattan Beach and Santa Monica/Venice Beach Piers! Those were the good ole' days when life was warm, wet and oh so wonderful! 💙

My grandma lived the strand near 45th The 60s and 70s were great decades to be close th such a gem

we recently moved from Manhattan Beach to Denver to be near aging parents. Sure do miss it! An incredible place to live. Miss the dog walks along The Strand.

Love to see the Manhattan Beach Pier--when I was about 11 years old I lived on the Strand within walking distance of the pier--a little white wooden, clap-board house. On weekends I'd take my small pole and walk down to fish off the side of the pier were, if I was lucky, I'd catch a few perch there & was helped with taking them off the hook by some of the older gentlemen who hung out during the day fishing. Being that I was a girl, they were very polite and sweet to me. There was a cleaning sink and sideboard where one could ready the fish for taking home. For bait I bought fish eggs at the concession stand at the end of the pier, where was offered hooks, reels, rods, and non-fishing goodies like popsicles, popcorn, candied red apples and best of all hamburgers with the works--the delicious fragrance of their cooking I still recall with pleasure--that, mingled with the cool ocean air, stale fish in buckets, a bit of cigarette or cigar smoke, the sea gulls squawking overhead, and the lazy days were memorable to me. I spent hours there trying to catch a fish (mostly unsuccessful), idling away the day with the sound of waves crashing on the shore but the surf rolling quietly under the pier. Elvis Presley, and the Beat Movement in writing and art and philosophy were big then. There weren't very many surfers at the pier area--mostly Redondo, Hermosa & further up the coast at Palos Verdes--a place called Malaga Cove.
