Join us live from the Viewing Area at RAF Lakenheath, a USAF base which is home to the 48th Fighter Wing. RAF Lakenheath might carry the name RAF, but it is a USAFE base and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons under its wing. The base is home to the birth of 'SKIM THE FENCE' and 'SKIM THE VAN' where the F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning pilots like to show us all how it's done.

RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
On the 15th January 1941, the US Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light). During WW2, the 492d, 493d and 494th Fighters Squadrons were trained and were significantly involved in the Normandy Landings, Operation Overlord and the Invasion of France. Their combat sorties involved bombings raids over bridges, railway lines and carried out reconnaissance missions. It was on the 10th July 1952, the Oklahoma Air National Guard 137th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base, France was redesignated as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
The Statue of Liberty was actually made near the base and the Mayor of the town gave a ceremonial name to the base as the "Statue of Liberty Wing". The 48th Fighter Wing is the only Wing in the USAF to have a number and a name!
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

Fantastic day for Ted and all the bears, we had Reggie, Red Ted, Drew, Ozzy and Yen all came for a visit. Our usual planes the F-15's and F-35's did not disappoint they were amazing with lots of fweeeeeeeeeps. Lots of movement from Mildenhall and as a special treat we also had the very gracious Osprey lovely to see her back up and flying. Wonderful job as normal Nikos and Ted. Lovely to see the humvees in convoy. Just love to hear the history of Lakenheath and today was no exception as we got to hear the history of our leader Squadron Leader Ted Coningsby.

Mmmmm Yep. It's this type of stream that makes me smile. Makes me watch! every minute! Over a few evenings. They are consistently that good. I am very proud to be a member! Plus, a very large part of exactly why I will be doing my 1st = Volunteering day this Saturday. You ALL are the reason. Plain and simple. Plus, my 2 x Amigos Namely @Ian Wright - 72 and @Keeno Send It, 3 big kids anytime, any place. Thank you. Smashed the day @Ted Coningsby. It's onto Coningsby but not before a comment! Well, you know me 😊. So the first siting of the CV22 Ospreys Taking off from Mildenhall. Whilst Reggie and Drew explaining runway numbers in the inevitable way, with humour 🤣 . I look for runway numbers everywhere now. Reggie with his stressed velcro top lol 😆, Too much Chuckun Reggie. Jens on the never-ending search for Captain Vaber? Who is he? What about them F35A's then 🤔, low approaching, 2 shipping, shouting loudest, ground shaking, Afterburner wonders. Such a Joy too watch. Turn like they are on rails. Roar like they've something to say. Can't wait to be back there soon at Lakenheath. Wish we could see our RAF F35B's come and join in with a Slow Rolling low approach and fly with our US friends. What a magic site that would be. All Fighter pilot legends together. Can dream, can't we? @7:45:11 2 x F15E's coming in low! Unusually low over the viewing area, that's ace. A pin-up shot if ever I saw one. Gracefully landing with airbrake deployed. Fantastic sight. A lot of everything here today, an educational and action day at the home of the 48th Fighter Wing. Never a dull day. @7:58:19 and just too confirm 👍 right on cue 2 low approaching F15E's soar into view, cruising the circuit, staying in close formation before another couple of low approaches breaks and turn outs. Ah Joy of joys 😀😃. Fweep @8:15:10 right on queue. As the show comes to an end. With 2 final F15E's @8:11:20 coming into circuit. Epic stream That is the way you do it. 57K too as I finish the stream. Thank you Ted and Nikos and all the Spanner Crew for this. To the 48th FW, you bring us joy. Big Love ❤️ :

Cause I saw 2 Eagles sit right there for like 30 minutes a week or so ago… Then people started running around like they were chasing Squirrels… Then with a shake of a Broom they were gone!

How long does it take for the “Final Inspection” or whatever we are fixing to see?

Aircraft do not only wait to have their checks carried out by the MS, but they may be waiting for clearance, a tanker, another aircraft in their flight, change of flight plans, traffic and many more reasons. It is not just the checks that take time but the departure clearance
