About a year ago just getting into my first planted tank and aquascaping and your guppy mosh pit is what inspired mine. It’s amazing to see what crazy colors pop up as nature takes its course.

I had a parasite break out after my move. Im assuming something in the substrate but hadnt had issues in years and no new fish. After a Fish room quarantine ( so much work) I have all newer fish in the tanks as all the older one have aged out. Its been interesting to watch the genetics of the fish evolve over the years. I like the guppies I dont care what other people think about what I keep. ;)
Thank you for the update! Everything looks beautiful. I am slowly removing similar looking Endlers from one of my tanks. As much as I like those fish, trying to catch them makes me never wanna keep them again LOL. I love your Platy fish 😍 Chonkers!!
Just be aware that the Half Black coloration can cause darkening and muddying of the assortment of guppy colors. So if they start getting darker and duller than you prefer, pull the half Blacks out.

If you shop around for endler's livebearers, that's where you'll most likely get the wild type pattern the fastest!

I love this! Do you think this repeatable or do you consider yourself lucky? I'm asking because I started out with five male and five female guppies with the plan to 'just' put in a bigger fish to eat most babies. Then I noticed one female with fin rot and made a few steep changes. I put in salt and to lower pH I put in a lot of leaf litter and I changed the temperature from 20°C to 28°C. That is nine days ago and at that time the first batch of babies was growing nicely and the day before yesterday the second batch of babies arrived. So now I'm already at 5 male, 4 female (the one with fin rot didn't make it) and maybe 20 fry all acting and looking very healthy but because of all the recent changes I don't want to put in new fish so quickly before I can be reasonably certain that the balance is back. And then I stumbled onto your mosh pit and I want to do the same but I hesitate because I only have 20 gallon in a 50 gallon tank with only a small hidden interior filter and few aquatic plants. I do have emergent plants like pothos and lobelia amongst others. Do you think that a less ideal setup leads to a lower population number or to stress, disease and failure? Also, have you ever noticed sings of inbreeding like bent spines? Well, I've been rambling so thanks for listening if you're still here and for sharing this. So regarding the one with fin rot -- it's a sad reality that most guppies you bring in from a store or farm or even a mass breeder are going to have a hard time in a new environment. A lot of them have a virus from the getgo, and so their time is limited. Others come from entirely different water parameters, sterile environments, and zero immunity to anything. It's not to say all guppies from all sources are doomed, but it's generally not surprising when newly purchased guppies die. The lyrics of the rap song are true -- started with a female that managed to give birth before dying. It's definitely a good idea to monitor the tank for additional illnesses or random deaths before introducing anything new. I wouldn't do too much to change your water parameters. Guppies are generally pretty good with high PH, high GH, and high KH, and sticking to your tap water parameters will make water changes easier in terms of maintaining consistent parameters. The only reason I have to add GH boost to my tank is because my tap water has ZERO GH, and fish need at least some minerals for osmoregulation. Is what I did repeatable? Absolutely, and it's been done quite often in a variety of tank sizes. And I can't imagine that what I'm doing is the ONLY way to do it successfully, but I personally prefer lots and lots and lots of plants. They serve many purposes -- nutrient absorption, hideouts for fry, surface area for beneficial bacteria, and a source of food for the guppies as leaves shed/decay, and a vessel for other critters like snails and various microfauna to thrive. I haven't tried it without plants, but I've certainly had a moshpit of yellow tiger endlers in a 20 gallon, and it did just fine. In general, always monitor water parameters and fish health no matter what. As for inbreeding and crooked spines, it's not been a problem. I think the moshpit is a relatively competitive environment. Fry aren't separated and coddled, the tank gets a finite amount of food added to it, and only the strong survive. So I imagine, similar to the wild, the guppies with weak genetics simply don't live long enough to propagate. Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck!!
