In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to apply colorful patinas to silver pieces using liver of sulfur.
Patination is a great way to enhance the dimensions of a silver piece. And liver of sulfur is a smelly but fun way to quickly give depth to a silver surface.
Have you ever noticed how silver items tarnish? They seem to turn shades of blue, yellow, orange and purple before they become a silvery grey. Well, liver of sulfur causes the same sort of oxidizing on a silver surface. The really cool part is that if you prepare the metal surface through depletion gilding techniques, you can pump up the color that the liver of sulfur produces. Likewise, if you perform tests where you monitor the temperature of the water, the amount of liver of sulfur and the exposure time, you can begin to control the color that you get. Unfortunately, unless you do something to coat your piece and protect the finish, the colors will fade over time.

Also, I've found a very effective and easy resist--if you don't want patina on certain areas of your piece. I melt beeswax and paint it on the areas I don't want to react. Since the wax cools and hardens so quickly, this works best when you warm up the piece. That way the wax soaks into the grain of the metal. Later, is very easy to remove with alcohol.

I often will melt bees wax onto a piece to help darken the darkest tones of the patina. There are some beautiful pieces that just resist techniques. Waxing or sealing that type of work helps to extent its original appearance. Thanks for the tip. Thanks for your support! : )

That's a good tip John, I will try that! Beeswax is a very useful material for metal work. Because it will quickly transition from a pliable state to a firm state, I use it for a lot of positioning when I emboss shaped wire into metal sheet. It can also be shaped into forms that will by themselves produce curves in metal when hammered--but not leave hammer marks. Well, I just write this to give others ideas--not dominate your very helpful videos. :)

Hi Ingrid, Glad you found the video. BTW, if you seal the patinated silver with anything (wax, shellac, glue, etc.) you will loose the some of your color (especially the blues). Thanks for your support! : )

You're not kidding about using Liver of Sulfur sparingly! I made the mistake of trying to push a very dark patina on silver by brushing on the gel directly to my piece. Instead of a patina, I think the sulfur and water present created sulfuric acid, which etched pits into my piece. It was totally ruined, but a learning experience and scrap that I can now experiment on.

That's the spirit! I often tell students not to get too sentimental about their projects. You're going to either sell or give away your work. So, why get so attached to it. It's better to learn from mistakes to improve your craft. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi Professor Arh, thanks for this wonderful video. Quick and easy question, how do you remove liver of sulfur on a piece I changed my mind and I want it back to the original sterling silver? Thanks so much

Hi Ingrid, The easiest way to completely remove the LOS from a silver piece is to heat it with your torch until it completely burns off the surface. Heat it the same way you would heat it to "frost" the surface. Pickle, brass brush, and finish to your desired appearance. Thanks for your support! : )

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy , thanks for your advice. I tried to remove the patina with 1 cup of boiling hot water with 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp baking soda. I soaked it for 10 minutes. Then I cleaned it with dawn and a sponge. And lastly, I scrubbed my silver bracelet with extra fine steel wool, and luckily all the patina disappeared. I didn't want to use the torch approach since it was already too late in the evening to use it. Thanks again for your help

i feel like there is a lot of guessing and hoping what color will develop is there a guaranteed way to get that blue hue 100% every time ? thank you
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 5 лет назад
Hi Bone Dust, There is a bit of serendipity to the process. You can improve your chances of creating a blue color on your silver if you "frost" it or build a layer of fine silver through depletion plating. Factors that can effect the outcome are: surface area, temperature, ratio of water to LOS, etc. Sorry I can tell you how to get the exact blue you want every time. At least you can remove the oxidation with heat and try again if it doesn't work out the first time. Good luck with your creative projects.

You only use the dry chunks - I only have the long life gel. (Not dared to use it yet) Are the procedures and colour results the same? What about on Copper?

Hi Fran, The gel is great if you're looking to merely produce a dark surface without any color variations. But, I believe that you can add the gel to hot water for a result similar to the one I achieved in the video. It may take a few tries. But, you can always get some of the dry stuff. On copper, LOS is just going to darken the surface. It can turn the metal black. Just be sure to wipe the surface off before you give the piece to anyone to wear. I like to adjust the color of the LOS on copper using 0000 steel wool. Have fun with your patination projects. Thanks for your support! : )

If i do that on a pièce of silver and then I make a Bezel with it - meaning I have to heat the piece - the color will probably disappear? Thank you very much!

Patination of a metal surface is one of the last things that a jeweler does when creating a piece. Heat and abrasion will remove the patina from a silver surface. 😀

Hello if i use this on metal jewelry how can i prevent to fade the colour obtained thanks to silver of sulphur? Using wax renaissance? Or which other protector? Please and thanks so much💜💜

Grazia The colorful patina created by the Liver of Sulfur will eventually turn black and come off with wear. Waxing over it will help to preserve it for a while. But anything put over the patina will diminish the color slightly. That’s just how it works. 🙂

Verdegris is impossible to develop on a silver surface. It is only possible to achieve a green color on copper and copper alloys. I suggest that you experiment with your silver and your liver of sulfur to see what colors you can get. Thanks for your support! : )

LOS should ALWAYS be neutralized with baking soda before putting down the drain or even dumping outside!
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 2 года назад
Dilution is the solution to pollution. In other words, if you have running water in your studio you can dispose of LOS down the drain if you flush the pipes with water. Since this wastes water, you might choose instead to neutralize your LOS with baking soda and pour the solution into cat litter to dry. Once the cat litter is fully dry, you can dispose of the mixture in the trash. 😀
