Liverpool 4-0 Aberdeen (and Alex Ferguson), 1980

A Battle of Britain in the 1980-81 European Cup second round. Liverpool had a one-goal lead to take into this return leg, courtesy of a Terry McDermott strike. This was Alex Ferguson's first visit to Anfield and not his most memorable - the tie proved to be a baptism of fire for his Aberdeen side in their first European Cup adventure. Liverpool meanwhile would go on to win the trophy for the third time. Gerald Sinstadt commentates.

I was at this game, Aberdeen fan travelled down from Scotland, and we were certainly given alesson in football class that night. Fergie, and Aberdeen, paid heed to that lesson and went on to greater things. It was great to see this Liverpool team play though, a different class.

Klopp has brought that intensity back to Anfield. They were marauders then and they are marauders now. Defending against them must have been a nightmare when you had a centre half running through like Hansen... You can't defend against a team where everyone except the goalie is pushing on and running in diagonals into the box... must have felt like they were playing against 14 men

Liverpool were an incredible team back then. For my team, Aberdeen, Fergie had just won his first trophy. The next few years would see some great signings, some brilliant young players come through, and culminate in the club's greatest ever team. I only wish that we, and other similar clubs were still able to win championships and European trophies today, but it was a different era back then, and much more of a level playing field

The '70s and '80s had many smaller clubs reaching European finals like Mechelen, Malmö, IFK Gothenburg, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Brugge, St Etienne, Nottingham Forest, Steau Bucharest and Panathinaikos. So many of these sort of teams are so far behind the biggest teams now.

a massive night for liverpool, beating the mighty dons the way they did,the game hinged on that awful tackle at pittodrie from mcdermott smashing one of our best players in the first leg,liverpool had battered there way into the next round and to be fair were out smarted by paisleys praise of strachen, the fool took on to many players losing the ball time and again.

@pertwee9376
@pertwee9376 9 месяцев назад
Absolute bollox! For a start it wasn't McDermot's tackle on McMaster it was Ray Kennedy, and it wasn't even a foul, nor was it given as one by the ref. The ball was there to be won and Ray Kennedy won it fairly under the rules that applied at the time. He would have got sent off today but it was a different game back then. There was no ill intent in that tackle, he just won the ball and McMaster was unfortunately injured. That kind of thing happened in those days and still does as a matter of fact. But that's one of the reasons why the rules have changed so much and why football is now a game of pufters. And if you think the match which Liverpool won 5-0 on aggregate, and in which they were already 1-0 up, hinged on that one unfortunate incident then you are deluding yourself.

It's not like Man United were paperweights before Alex Ferguson took the reins. Prior to his arrival, they had 7 League Titles, 6 FA Cup titles, and 1 European Cup to their credit. Sustained success isn't exactly an easy thing to maintain in professional sports. It's not like Liverpool has exactly been lighting up the football world since King Kenny's departure in 1990. Heck, Kenny couldn't even replicate that success in his brief return.

+daztot The wheels had come off completely at United when Fergie took over; the team was second bottom after a slew of inadequate buys coupled with ageing, demotivated players. That said, many United fans were hugely unhappy with him for his first four/five years in charge, regarding him as an excuse maker who was hopelessly out of his depth at Old Trafford; we just seemed to be going nowhere, till it suddenly gelled. As for Bob Paisley, well, the man was a master tactician who knew exactly who to get to for the Anfield system. As Gordon McQueen has said, your recruitment was the best.

It's so funny reading posts about how Liverpool didn't spend any money! It's all relative. You can't compare 1980 with 1990 or 2000, or 2010. Liverpool smashed the British transfer record to sign Dalglish in the 70's and spent massively again to get Barnes £900,000, Beardsley £1.9 Million and Aldridge £750,000 in the 80's. All huge transfer fees in that era with Beardsley's fee yet another record!!! Then some numpty has the cheek to bang on about Fergie's spending when all his signings pre-Glazer were self generated unlike your Blackburn, Chelsea, and City. If you're going to have a go @ Fergie or United then PLEASE get your facts right especially Daztot!!!!!!!!
@1989NickyD
@1989NickyD 8 лет назад
Of course Liverpool spent in the 70's and 80's, but so did United. Dalglish was signed for £440,000 in August 77, six months later in Feb 78, United signed Gordon McQueen from Leeds for £495,000. Then in Aug 79 they paid Chelsea £800,000 for Ray Wilkins (more than Liverpool paid for Aldridge in *Jan 87*) Then of course there were others like Garry Birtles (£1.25m in 1980, *seven years* before Liverpool broke the £1m barrier for Beardsley) Frank Stapleton (£900,000 in *81*) Remi Moses (£650,000 in 81) and of course Bryan Robson, also in 81, for £1.5m from WBA. They also paid big fees for the likes of Alan Brazil and Gordon Strachan.
@KryptonitetoallBS
@KryptonitetoallBS 8 лет назад
No-one said United didn't spend-(all self generated though mind). The point is the hypocrisy of Liverpool fans saying nonsense like Fergie "bought success" when during Liverpool's most successful era they were known for always buying at least 2 big names during the close season. And as I stated in my earlier post it wasn't unknown for Liverpool to smash the British transfer record in doing so!!! Compare that to Fergie's first successful spell where he bought class like Schmeichel in 1991 £500k, Cantona in 1992 £1.2, Irwin £625k 1990, Bruce £800k 1987, McClair £850k 1987. Fergie was never given the money to just splash out when he felt like it unlike for example Dalglish when he was @ Blackburn with Jack Walker's chequebook!!! In addition Fergie brought through loads of homegrown young talent from the academy. I'm sure I don't need to remind you of who!
@1989NickyD
@1989NickyD 8 лет назад
I fail to see what Blackburn have got to do with this? When they won the title in 94-95, United's first choice XI cost more than Blackburn's did that season. Andy Cole cost United almost twice as much as Shearer had cost Blackburn. You claim that Liverpool 'we're known for buying at least 2 big names during the close season' during the clubs most successful era. Liverpool's most successful era lasted nigh on 20 years and you've come up with Dalglish in 1977 and Barnes, Beardsley & Aldridge from around 87-88. What about the other 17-18 years? During that era, Liverpool didn't sign 'big names' they bought players and turned them into 'big names' I refer primarily to players like Ian Rush & Graeme Souness. As for 'smashing' the british transfer record, United also broke the record a couple of times during that era and were more than capable of competing in the transfer market. In your list of players signed by Fergie in the late 80's you missed out, Mark Hughes £1.8m from Barcelona 1988, Mike Phelan £750k 1989, Paul Ince £1m 1989, Neil Webb £1.5m 1989, Danny Wallace £1.2m 1989, Gary Pallister £2.3m 1989. I'm not sure what you mean by United's spending being 'self-generated'? During Liverpool's period of success they didn't have super-rich owners. Just for the record, I'm not saying that Fergie bought success in the way that the likes of Chelsea & Man City have. Without the investment they have received, those 2 clubs would be finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League like they used to.
@KryptonitetoallBS
@KryptonitetoallBS 8 лет назад
1. When United are accused ( as they are on this page) of buying the league I think it's very relevant to highlight the difference between clubs who actually DID buy the league ala Blackburn Rovers under Dalglish. NO-ONE could compete with Jack Walker's millions at that time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Transfer fees are not the only contributory factor NickyD. He attracted players on huge wages that no other club could match. 2. The Liverpool way ie-buy 2 new stars during the summer was and still is well known. It's often held up in the media as being the sensible way of doing things. ie- Don't rock the boat too much but just enough to keep the established 1st teamers on their metal. This isn't my opinion Nicky, this is fact. And why is it relevant? Because some posters have said that United spent big. I'm just highlighting that in their successful time Liverpool did EXACTLY the same thing! 3. Self generated- again highlights how United made their money compared to Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, City etc. Personally I give more credit to teams who have made their own money rather than have it handed to them. If you feel that the success that Chelsea, City, PSG get is the same as Arsenal or United then I'm afraid we will just have to disagree!!
@1989NickyD
@1989NickyD 8 лет назад
Jack Walker may have been able to pay big wages to some of his players like Shearer & Sutton but, I'm sure the likes of Keane, Ince, Hughes & Cole weren't being paid a pittance in comparison. Again you're saying that Liverpool signed 'stars' every year during the 70's and 80's.Just look at the Liverpool team in this video, apart from Dalglish, how many of that team were 'stars' *before* they joined Liverpool? I've already mentioned Rush (signed from Chester) & Souness (signed from Middlesbrough) but lets look at some of the others. Ray Clemence was signed from Scunthorpe, Phil Neal from Northampton, Alan Hansen from Partick Thistle, Sammy Lee & Phil Thompson came through the ranks at Liverpool. Add the likes of Ronnie Whelan signed from Home Farm and Steve Nicol from Ayr United and it's obvious that Liverpool did not sign *stars* every season. The money for those and other signings was also self-generated. I'm not saying that every player that Fergie signed was already an established 'star' player, although over the past 35 years, United have paid a British transfer fee record amount for a player more often than any other English club, e.g Robson, Keane, Cole, Veron, Ferdinand, Pogba. I have no idea why you're saying "If you feel that the success that Chelsea, City, PSG get is the same as Arsenal or United then I'm afraid we will just have to disagree!!" when I have already addressed that point at the end of my previous comment but I'll reiterate. The success achieved by Liverpool then United & Arsenal was not down to having super-wealthy owners, the success achieved by Chelsea & City blatantly was.

Aberdeen had a great side back then, Big Hardy (dirty) defenders that knew how to defend, digging midfielders, silky fast wingers and deadly strikers, what wasn't to like? Fergie got the best out of everyone of them n they LOVED playing for Aberdeen. First game I was at Aberdeen handed out a 2-1 defeat, 84 Cup final, they just had that little bit extra and more class and self belief back then. They were a great fast clinical team whenever they turned it on but they won the chance to do that by winning their personal battles, they could lay the boot in and kick lumps out of anyone along the way if need be. Hardy basta*** and a deadly football team that feared nobody back then. This was probably the only lesson ever dished out to them n Fergie held grudges for Years after it towards Liverpool, Souness, Dalglish n Hansen. His bitterness about Liverpool n Those 3 Scottish players cost Scotland a place in next round of 86 World Cup. Bitter man.
