Hey Ty maybe when you screw that relief valve into the pump it somehow activates the relief. If you were to screw a bush type fitting into the pump then screw the relief valve into the bush to eliminate any issues with the pump body thread, maybe??
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
That was my thinking that the fitting was going to far in and activating but the more we talk to people I don't think that is a possible outcome.

Hi Sailors, I love how Hillary does all the splicing on board-maybe she will teach me. Did you find a plug for the relief valve port? From all the other systems we have installed it looked like the setting hex plug is way out. If you screw it in more does the water stop? If not, where can I send another relief valve? Well, another great video. Safe sailing with fair winds and smooth seas my friends. Where did you get your dink plans, it is way cool? Cheers, Stu and Maggie SY Sea Peace
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
Stu we did get a plug and it is working great and we also saw a big improvement in efficiency. It is out a bit in that shot but yes it is the same when in or out and it makes no difference, do you have the name of the supplier so I could reach out and see what the problem might be? It does look like the plastic valve does not seat properly but it all looks fine.

About the pressure relief valve: IF it's a metal seat (check before you start, don't do this if it's plastic or coated) and you can take it apart enough to separate the valve and seating surface AND if you you can keep the faces parallel (if you can't, don't do this!), stop by a machine shop and get some seat lapping compound, extra fine grit. Using something like a foam makeup applicator, put a little of the lapping compound (stir it up first!) on the seat and the valve facing surface, you don't need much, then marking where you start, rotate the seat and valve faces against each other pressing gently and keeping it straight, about a quarter turn each way to grind down the surfaces, turning about 45 degrees each way. Lift it and turn it 90 degrees and do it again. Repeat twice in whichever direction you started (clockwise or anti) and have made one full revolution. You may want to do it again. Clean the surfaces thoroughly. flushing the valve and surfaces with grain alcohol or denatured alcohol then blow dry and rinse it with fresh alcohol again. Make sure you remove all the lapping compound! In ideal conditions, the 2 faces meet at slightly different angles, but you do what you have to where you are with what you have. If you grind it straight (parallel) face to face, they will seal until they corrode (again).
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
Thanks for the detailed fix Neal, straight up though the valves are plastic and unless I am reading this wrong this will not work correct? Strange thing is we had two brand new valves and they both leaked in the same spot, do you think the luck was that bad to get two non working relief valves?
@nealbirch9462
@nealbirch9462 6 лет назад
I wouldn't try this on a plastic seat, the grit would embed itself into the plastic. I forget if you had said where they were made, but the manufacturer should provide some relief (sorry for the pun) if you can contact them. These valves shouldn't leak at low pressure at all! I'm assuming that it leaks more at high pressure? 2 in a row makes me nervous. Call Mr. Willoughby and see if he can source you a tested relief valve, maybe. Also possible, see if there is something at a place that repairs pressure washers that might work, though those are set at higher pressure, they may be adjustable. if it's bronze you may have some issues with dissimilar metals and electrolysis.
@nealbirch9462
@nealbirch9462 6 лет назад
Further research on so called pop-off relief valves, I found this item: www.catpumps.com/products/pdfs/9960_C(1).pdf Stainless steel, adjustable. I did a google for the cat pop-off relief valve and found a number of vendors with a wide range of prices. 1/4" npt thread, you might need an adapter.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
Thank you for the links, that looks similar and someone else had mentioned a AR5000-1 which looks almost identical. Stu has offered to ship another one which probably can't happen until Panama or maybe Costa Rica. It does leak more as more pressure is added but once any kind of pressure is introduced it is pretty consistent in flow, I will reach out to Stu again and try and get info on the supplier so I can contact them. Good tips on finding a replacement from a pressure washer repair place, again I think that might be a Panama thing for us, right now we have it capped off and it works great with much better efficiency.
@nealbirch9462
@nealbirch9462 6 лет назад
Ah, boat repairs in exotic places, check. You have that pressure gauge where you can see it, if I remember your watermaker video correctly, so YOU are now the relief valve, just one more thing to monitor, oh joy. Thanks for the great videos as usual!

Ty and Hillary... hi! Why not do a deal like Ran and the Wynns and La Vaga and just get a dinghy and show it some. You guys are players! Say Highfield! They will come.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
Rick, maybe. We have never been good at pushing ourselves on anyone and we have wanted to stay as true to ourselves as possible. We just couldn't do it unless it was something we had already used and had strong opinions about, we get lots of emails to test and review stuff and most of it has no place on our boat. At least a dinghy would be useful, we keep our ears open though in case something comes along, we may reach out to an outwear company to look for drysuits for the south.

That pressure valve did you ever think to put teflon tape on threads of the adjust plug? Looks like the fluid is sneaking through the slight clearance. Also could it be missing a cap?
@AdventureAdriftSailing

No John, I think that might be the case but I didn't think teflon tape should be used, I can try it.

Hey Hillary, every time you close out an episode you say Adios.....it always feels like there should be another word following, so being an old retired teacher myself I was think this; perhaps you could throw in a Mexican word or what ever language your picking up at the time i.e. ‘Adios’ means go with god! That would stick in peoples minds and if you talk it over with Ty maybe he could suggest a word that trips him up? I know it’s presumptuous but what the heck you’ll be helping us understand the language. Watching you converse with the locals is breath taking. I hope your passage is going good! Regards, George

Re the relief valve. To establish if the needle is not seating properly on the seat could you paint the mating face of the needle with a nikko pen. Then slide the needle and spring into the barrel and rotate. If its lapping correctly then a full circle of nikko will be wiped off. Im assuming this is an AR5000-1 valve and i cant find any details of the internals. If its like the Cat valve as linked by Neal i would think the needle cylinder needs to be a close tolerance with the barrel. If not it can tilt under spring pressure in the barrel and never seat correctly. if its a sloopy fit, as an experiment you could rap the needle cylinder with say teflon tape to reduce the clearance and retry.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
John I hadn't thought of using the teflon tape as I thought that might change the effectiveness of the actual relief (clogging etc.) I like this idea though and keep thinking the leak might be coming from the threading. It does look a lot like the AR5000-1 you mentioned, I have reached out to Stu to get the supplier info and find out the cause.
@johnmewing2153
@johnmewing2153 6 лет назад
Ty. The other thing to check is how the seat is sealed against the valve body (if its a separate seat) . The needle to seat face may be perfect but if the seat to body seal is defective water can leak by that path. Wouldn't worry too much about tape clogging. These are just experiments to determine the problem. Once you identify the source you can settle on a more permanent solution. By the way i'm originally from a little place called Crows Nest QLD. Somewhere near your home town i think. Cheers.

Varnish on handles leads to blisters. Using an oil to seal the wood works better.
@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
The varnish was used to seal the whipping around the oar where it contacts the oar lock, we have been reading lately that painting them may make them last longer without reapplication of varnish. Any special oil you are using, maybe a teak oil?

@AdventureAdriftSailing
@AdventureAdriftSailing 6 лет назад
I (Ty) get frustrated and think that as well many times, but in reality it is a lot easier to work with and repair than an inflatable would be. It just needs to be a stronger design and it would be great, Fiberglass inside and out would be great as this ply is not going to last.
