This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Three time world hoop dancing champion, Dallas Arcand explains how dancing in circles has taught him to find a healthy balance in life. His journey of self discovery inspired his belief in the ability of circles to restore harmony. Dallas also shares his culture and performs a special hoop dance to illustrate the athletic and creative art form that saved his life.
Dallas Arcand is a high energy Aboriginal Entertainer from the Alexander (Kipohtakaw) Cree Nation near Edmonton, and world champion hoop dancer. Arcand is also a renowned musician and motivational speaker, facilitating workshops for aboriginal people of all ages, speaking on topics ranging from self-awareness to personal motivation. His Aboriginal name is ‘Dancing Buffalo Man’ (Nimihto Paskwa Mostôs Napew), and for many years Arcand had no idea that dancing would become a major influence in his life. A graduate of Mount Royal College with a General Studies Diploma majoring in Behavioural Sciences, he now delights in sharing his culture through this athletic and creative art form.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

If you felt excited by the drum music at the end, a strange fluttering in your chest, that's your spirit waking up and paying attention. Maybe you even got choked up and cried a bit. That's your spirit responding to a very powerful song. You probably needed healing. Your spirit is telling you, here's another road, a better road. It feels good because it is good. It's medicine.

MAY WE ALL AWAKEN AND UNSEW OUR GREEDY EYES, UNTANGLE OUR DID-EASED MINDS, UNCLASP OUR ANGRY HEARTS, AND ACKNOWLEDGE OUR SPIRITS... AS THE ONE SPIRIT WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN. MAY WE AWAKEN TO THE TRUTH OF THIS SACRED CIRCLE OF LIFE ALL AROUND AND THRU OUR ONE SOUL, ONE BREATH, ONE HEART.... HERE, NOW.. AND IN ALL WAYS. 🙏 💞 ✨ Let it be so.

Thank you for that, I have always, at least as long as I remember, been moved to tears and joy by the drums and voices of Native Americans singing and dancing, I want to dance myself. As a child in the 60’s I didn’t have a clue how to dance, but my joy would come out in all types of hopping and jumping to the beat! ❤️😁

So very true. It is amazing how much power and magic one does have. My mother was a medicine lady through the Cherokee Nation Secret Garden like most people grow vegetable gardens and made some very strong medicine. I seen times when she would pray to her great spirit for power, strength and wisdom she could put her hands on sick folks and the sickness would go away. I myself I was born with a brain tumor the doctor said I would never live to see five year old I couldn't walk couldn't talk can do nothing for myself at the age of 3 doctor said that they can operate but they would not get 100% if the tumor. That would leave me a vegetable for the remaining time did I have left on Earth. My mother didn't go for that her my father got me up in this little Country Church at the age of 3 years old has she started praying he pray very very hard she put her hands upon my head and ask God to remove this. She said God bless The Almighty, he was the great spirit. Well folks God removed the tumor what was diagnosed for times malignant through the Duke University Children's Hospital head now disappeared. I'm at the ripe old age past 50 shall I say and I thank God for every day. I guess and I pray this little spirit inside me says tell your testimony. Yes as a 3/4 blood Cherokee I myself have very powerful Magic and it comes straight from the heavens. I know there's a lot of non-believers Maybe no one can change your mind but I'm here to say God change mine God bless love to all

@@gagepratt5435 I find it interesting that also the old wisdom of Germanic tribes has similar believes, such as time being circular and not linear. How wonderful that your people were able to keep their culture alive. Germanic tribes were defeated by Christians in such a manner, that most of our culture was adapted to Christianity, so we don't have our songs and music anymore and most of our daily communication with our Gods is lost. We can only learn from the graves and other findings.

When he danced, the circles and his movements were looking like those of many different animals. He finished with a human. He must have spent thousands of hours practicing the dance for the movements to seem natural. I think his deep spirituality was the thing that kept him motivated for dancing so much.

I have been going to Pow Wow's for years and have seen relatively few Hoop Dancers. A lot of Fancy and Grass dancers and others, but watching the Hoop Dancers is absolutely awesome. I believe he performed at a corporate event in Phoenix and I worked there in Engineering and as I was checking equipment, heard the music and went to the upper catwalk around the Grand Ball Room and watched the entire performance and was blown away. The theme of the conference was what he discussed the circles and how they restored the harmony that so many of us were missing. The attendees were great and I heard discussions for the next three days of the conference about how people were moved by the performance and his message.

It is performed at Knotts Berry Farm several times a day. Always wonderful to see it done, and the dancer takes the time to talk to the children who show an interest.

So moving and full of meaning. Wonderful to hear his story and see his performance. Amazing to see him manipulate the hoops. I could image me tangled in them! Bravo Dallas! Thanks for sharing this with the world.

Like Mr. Arcand, I too got in trouble with the law. But it was sitting and listening to people like him that made me proud of where I come from, and that I should change my life for the better. And so I did.

I am native, but have no idea from what tribe because that knowledge wasn't passed down. My great-great grandma's parents passed away when she was very young, so that part of my family died with them. All I know is that my family descends from the Ancestral Puebloans, who eventually integrated with other Southwest tribes. Hoop dancing originated within the southwest tribes. It wasn't until I was already a well-seasoned hoop dancer that I found out the history of hoop dancing. Our history was wiped out, but the spirit still lives.

Then you’re not native. No tribal affiliation nor you’re an enrolled citizen means you are not native

I am beyond grateful that even though I wasn't at this event, I can be changed by it today - deepest respect and thanks to all involved, including those who first taught Dallas Arnand about the tremendous power and healing and balance and joy in the circle dance
