I’m Thai, born with curly hair & dark skinned lol. I remember the elders would point at me & tell me I’m different..as an adult, I love my beautiful dark tan skin & beautiful curly hair.

Many people wish they had curly hair and darker skin. People spend money to make themselves look like what you naturally look like. Embrace it dude.

My wife is from Isaan. she apologized when we met her father in ubon ratchathani because in her words he is “black skin.” I was shocked she would apologize for her fathers skin color. I said he was beautiful and the family laughed in a positive way for using the word beautiful to describe her father. Definitely a culture shock. She asked me a few more times that week if I was okay with her fathers skin color. She also was shocked when we met a black American couple and was extremely impressed that was possible.

Asians in general don't like darkskinned people or Blacks. Even in the USA, the Asians prefer to deal with whites.

Talking about a black man being a basketball player. I (a Thai-American) took my good friend, Alex, to Thailand with me in the late-90's. Alex is a 6'5", dark complexion, and bald-headed black guy; he was originally from Senegal (then France, then U.S.). Everyone in Thailand thought that he was Michael Jordan from the Chicago Bulls and tried to get the autograph from him (there was no cellphone camera back then). The funny thing is that Alex was a much better soccer player than a basketball player (he sucked at basketball, despite his height). 😂

Great vlog and fascinating perspective, dude. That experience with the police is kinda sad, though. Back in '10 and '11, I had a British friend in Thailand who happened to be black. He had a couple of similar experiences with Bangkok police and told me it was because they have a lot of Nigerians that are involved with running the ice on the streets. Still, the stereotyping sucks, and my buddy decided to move on to the Philippines. He is still there and married with kids...Loving life. Peace and love, man.

The Nigerians are definitely known for selling ice. Some Thai girls have approached me asking for some because they thought I was African. Just something to be aware of.

I was adopted from Thailand by Swedish parents when I was 6 weeks old, my parents wanted a more white looking child and the orphanage said I had a Western nose and called me pinky, dunno. I don't care about what colour or what race you are, as long as you're a kind soul. I've got a dark birth mark, which is quite big on my hip, and Thais think I've had a weird skin bleaching. Bleaching your skin is completely crazy in my eyes 😢

Thanks for a great video. Your experience in Thailand is very unique because you live in a remote area by yourself as a black man. You are very insightful and open-minded person. Everything you said about Thailand is mostly true, except the part of dating. Dating Thais involve family which is different from dating Americans. Relationship can be greatly influenced by family members, especially parents. I speak as a Thai woman who has been living in US for 30+ years.

Great story Brother 👍. I was born in the UK but of African ancestry and I have been travelling to Asia since 2008 been to Thailand once I can relate to all you said about being dark skinned, the bias and prejudice depending on who you encounter amongst some Thai people. Some were friendly with me and my friend also from the UK and some were not. I am 100% African and proudly African regardless of being born in the UK and I defiantly won't let any race or person look down on me or negatively treat me badly because I am black and African. There is nothing wrong being an African, its purely ignorance and poor education in Asia that makes many Asians think lame about Africans or other dark skinned people from America or the Carribbean. I have visited several countries like Japan, Philippines. Singapore , Thailand and HongKong. Malaysia, South Korea.Vietnam , Laos and Cambodia not yet but I have heard Africans do get stereotyped and discriminated against in various situations in some of these countries and it really does piss me off. Some Africans from the motherland continent go to these countries and commit crimes now adding fuel to the fire 🔥 and make the travel experience bad for other decent African travelling around Asia but why judge an entire group of Africans as bad because of the action of a tiny percentage of Africans. However I will never let the bad actions of a small percentage of Africans from motherland Africa ruin my travel adventures in Asia especially The Philippines and Singapore my favourite countries of all times in Asia because my experiences in both countries since 2008 has been nothing but fantastic and amazing.

Let me tell you a short story. I was stationed in Thailand back I the mid 70s . During hat time, Thailand was for R &R, mostly. Picking up the ladies was the recreation. On one particular evening, I picked up a young lady an we went back to her bungalow . The evening went on and I wondered why we hadn’t gotten down o he main event. At that time, curfews were the rule . You had to be off the street by midnight. Midnight came and I asked what was the trouble. She confessed that, she had dated Caucasian men and was told not to date Blacks cause at midnight, they grew tails. I fell out on the floor with laughter. I was close to my bungalow and was able to make it home without being caught. I remembered that story and every time I saw her we laughed.

35 years ago I studied English courses for TOFEL exams and the international school I attended had many black teachers. One in my class full of bubbling and giggling Thai students, both males and females, middle age to teen (I was a 16 years old back then). We felt odd on the first day due to unfamiliarity with BLACK TEACHERS but after the first day everything went well. We teased our black teacher a lot, not for his skin but his name. He had a girl name and he always joke about it. 😂😇 Imagine the understanding and openness 35 years ago compared to now.

The dark skin complex is all over Asia you will see the same thing in Cambodia, Laos, Philippines even, its just part of the culture thats why you see some dark asian girls put white make up on their face same way you see some Africans, Jamaicans, Haitians etc girls do the same by bleaching. Does it make it right ? Is it sad? yes we all human just accept who you are and believe in yourself there's no general standards of beauty except the one you make yourself after being able to believe in yourself dont let negativity or other people tells you what beauty is. Believe, trust yourself and elevate to be the best version of you...
