Living Colour performing live at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 20th 2001. Second half. Setlist: Elvis is Dead Type Love Rears Its Ugly Head Power of Soul Cult of Personality American Skin (41 Shots)
What Corey Glover does on " Everything that goes around it comes around" it phrase is exceptional showing he is one of the best singers in the history of music . What a kick ass band.
so stoked to see these guys still tearing it up , awesome musicians I cant get enough of Vernon's guitar playing.Power of soul to all Living Colour fans ,whats 41 shots?
People say they never got their due...come onnnnn! Look the comments, from 30 different countries. They want to see LC as a Bon Jovi or Metallica....come on! They got their due worldwide and that's why I am writting from Brazil. Amazing Show in Porto Alegre city in 2004! Great band, great job they will be remembered 4 ever! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@tomhill9066 that was a great interview very unexpected way back then! When Neil passed Will did an amazing interview, I think it was on Twitter... he spoke about how he was invited by Neil to a rush concert and he spent the whole day with him and his son it was priceless🎆
Isn't it a pity how the media hype up so many mediocre artists and enormously talented bands like LIVING COLOR are not praised as one of the greatest bands to emerge in the past three decades
I was supposed to go to see motley Crue two days ago till I watched a few live shows! They were so horrible I sold my tickets but will be going to see living colour next month indeed!
Steve Taylor Good choice! I walked out on Motley Crew a few years ago. Scorpions were opening, so I saw them, and tried to stick around for the Crew, but I couldn't take it. Horrible.
Not only are they incredible musicians, but their songs are socially relevant, about real life, real struggles and real victories. That is sorely lacking in today’s music.
Some people actually complain about the guitar solos are you kidding one if the best guitarist ever is it to inovative for you go somewhere else for bland
I think the musicality was there, but for a lot of people, it just gets lost in the artist's (in this case, Vernon's) passion and energy. I can understand that, and have been there myself. On one hand, you can call him ignorant for not catering to the audience, but perhaps the audience will appreciate his energy more than the musicality, it being there or not. But I agree that he's great.
To some maybe. He plays in various styles depending on the song, but he often plays very angular structures with both precision and then veering into near dissonant , overdriven distorted chaos, but always "in time" which should be the first indicator that theres more going on.
Thing about Vernon is that there was a real show off speed trend around the time they got big. And just taking that aspect of the playing, Vernon always has soul in every note. He isn't just fast or "technical" there is heart in everything he plays. But yeah it is like that time Hockey got briefly big and to help people understand it, they drew an orange circle around the puck for home TV watchers, so Americans could follow the game, because if you didn't grow up watching hokey, the puck is so dang small.
i have always been totally blown away by the talent these guys have, it just literally flows from each one of them to create something so fucking good, everytime i watch them, i have a giant smile on my face from the ridiculous talent they possess
So true. I have all of their albums on which (almost) every piece is good. These musicians are really awesome and they should have been more recognized for their raw talent.
Just in case any newbies come along and don't know who these incredible men are: lead singer Corey Glover, Vernon Reid on guitar, Doug Wimbish on electric bass, and Will Calhoun on drums. The band site is livingcolour dot com.
What a fantastic blend of rock, jazz, blues and political awareness. Even 14 yrs. later, everything they sing about is relevant, current and pinpoint accurate. 41 shots. plus about 20 more...
"...talented black guys as good as any white band ive ever seen...." Wow - so that's the Gold Standard??The Litmus test -- whether a band of Black, japanese?, Indian? etc?? band is good, is to be as good as any white band?? Hope that's not what you meant, lol. But check your history: rock n roll, not only came from field hollers, country music, but primarily Black People like Robert Johnson , Charlie Christian, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, Little Richard as well as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins etc
Diana Burnwood, Apparently, you are too young to remember Amadou Diallo, or the mood and sentiment of many New Yorkers (especially Blacks) at the time this was written and performed. Please, don't be so insensitive and assume that Corey's tears were just "for the camera". I, myself, began to choke up when I heard the first chords of Vernon's intro. Because I DO remember. The sad and unfortunate thing is that not much has changed. The most recent and glaring example: Ferguson.
Oh man, you're so right. I totally agree with you. I'm deeply impressed by the emotional and soulful, absolutely authentic human being of the charismatic singer Corey Glover ...! Thanks a lot for this Living Colour-performance. Love & peace ...!
Tony Red if you listen to the first records, before Blood Sugar and shit...thats pretty the same strategy. And i already saw Anthony saying something about LC
+Bruno Pires Mucheroni Chilli peppers were heavily influenced by Fishbone. Flea worships the ground Norwood Fisher walks on. No doubt living colour played a part as well but the chilli peppers were formed back in 83 released first album in 84.Living Colour formed in 84 and released first album in 88. Chilli's were going strong before Living Colour became prominent. Living were on the NYC circuit.I hear where you are coming from dude
Hell yeah they brought the Hendrix! "With The Power" I was hoping they'd do their version of "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp" but I'll definitely settle for this anyday.
Wonderful and delicious concert ...!!! I'm deeply impressed by the emotional and soulful, absolutely authentic human being of the charismatic singer Corey Glover ...! Thanks a lot for this Living Colour-performance. Surely, "Everything is possible with the power of soul ...!" - I don't want to mis to thank Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne for their fight for human rights, ... global solidarity and against rassism ...!!! - Love & peace ...!
Absolutely fucking brilliant. I remember this coming out and being stunned all those years ago in London!!!!!!!!!!!! Stunning, intelligent rock played by supremely talented black guys as good as any white band ive ever seen. Truly, color should not be an issue, but these guys are utterly spellbinding! I wish there was more like them !!!! Such an amazing amalgum of styles. Even Zappa would be proud of this..........................................its all in there and more besides
Amazing!!!! I first heard LC about 20 years ago. Back then I never REALLY understood their music. Problem was I was listening my "ears" and not my heart. Watching Cory on the closing song being speechless made me realise how trivial words can be when they have the abilty to convey the way they do through music.
Gawd daum they was/are/always will be badass! Saw them 5 times, As a drummer Calhoun blows my mind. They all do! Vernon went into outer space channeling Jimi. PS Thanks for posting this!
I was there ... unforgettable. - revisited in 2022 - I still cry when hearing 41 shots - as I did at the concert. I worked at the gig, so I usually have a professional distance to the performance, but that was not possible in any way with the performance of this song. The most honest interepretation of any song I have ever seen in my life. It still moves me 21 years later and will possibly do the rest of my life.
+sean decastro, excellent point, but push the music and that comb just suddenly disappears...great music and they are defying the stereotypes as is...try listening to the group "love" album "forever changes". you will forget about the comb. what comb?
I saw Livin Colour open for GnR and the Stones in 90 at The Coliseum in Watts Los Angeles on The Steel Wheels Tour! They were great but the front of house mix was garbage and the PA volume was only 20% of what GnR and The Stones was.
I love living color. but why all the hate towards elvis. i mean in his later years just about everyone in his band was black in vegas. of course elvis was not great, chuck berry to me epitomizes rock and roll(as differentiated from rock). and it was interesting how people got tired of rock and wanted to dance and it was the sex pistols who brought back dance to pop rock. to me its a toss up between cb's "johnny b goode" and" pistols "god save the queen" as being the best rock and roll tunes to jump and down to, to dance.
+Gustavo Caro Lo ví en Obras hacerlo y nadie se lo comió, trepó por la popular y bajó por el campo. Un groso total! él y los demás. Excelente show! (I saw Corey in Argentina doing the same and nobody ate him , climbed the popular and down the field . A total master! he and the rest od the band) Great Show! year 2001 too.
What is this band doing at a jazz festival?! In recent decades we've seen bands and artists like Sting, Jamiroquai and such appearing at jazz festivals. They have never played jazz, ever. Just because there may be an element of improvisation in a musical genre doesn't mean it is jazz. If it was then almost every musical genre would be classified as "jazz": Dream Theater, Madonna, Britney Spears and on and on ad nauseam.
This is the worst i have heard living colour. The reason is that there performing at a Jazz Festival where they think they have to improvise more which sucks if theres too much of it going on!
@timesup73 I always thought this was all that was broadcast (I have it on a DVD that doesn't indicate it's part 2), but after finding a couple of other videos of the show on RU-vid, I guess you are right! I changed the title to second half, thanks for the info.
i love this festival, the bands always seem to go for it and indulge themselves , ive been 6 times and never failed to be impressed. i think neil young was my favorite, his set seemed tailor made for my taste, did he know i was coming? and living colour are brilliant despite what closed minded non traveled musically illexposed people say.
Elvis is in Buckingham Palace. We put his brain in the body of a crocodile along with Princess Diana's in another. They swim in a tank together... Charles often taunts them
