There have been phenomenal female singers over the years --- Aretha, Whitney, Mariah --- but Karen Carpenter had the silkiest, most effortless voice I ever heard --- almost like she wasn't even trying that hard --- simply amazing to be blessed by God to have that kind of talent

Karen Carpenter was a beautiful singer, 💐💐, a wonderful drummer, 🥁💐💐, she collected teddy bears, she like chocolates ( even though she had anorexia), and she was a sweet, kind person 💖💖💖💖💖!! It's very sad that she died so young and I'm sure that she is in heaven singing with the angels 💐💐🌹🌹🙏🙏💛💛💛💛💛!!!

Having suffered from anorexia myself, I know how desperate she must have felt. Utterly, utterly despondent, very frightened, no self-worth & trapped, a true living nightmare. Being thin is just not worth the pain. It did look like Richard was the golden boy and was favoured over her, (probably not intentionally by her mother, but that didn't help). If only the modern treatment was available then, she may have survived, but it's up to the person to want to get better. So very sad though.

I totally understand this because I have a version of the same family. Nothing & nobody in your life is ever good enough if they don't have control of it/them or they didn't choose it for you. It's not just a control-freak mentality, it's sexist. The way the family sees it, the boy(s) can do no wrong, but everything their daughter does IS wrong unless the family decides or chooses it FOR her. It's hard to escape that kind of family system because they don't see themselves as wrong - ever.
@SayItAintSo4real

Wow. Excellent post. You nailed it. And that kind of family dynamic can cause irreparable harm, and sometimes even death for some, as in this case. It's still so heartbreaking to me what happened to the beautiful soul, Karen Carpenter. And I am so sorry that you have had to deal with such similar circumstances within a family. I wish Karen could have found the strength to just "walk away" from her family long enough to get the help she needed, and to heal from her upbringing and damaging family dynamics. She just ran out of time. Bless her.
@RonBaker456
@RonBaker456 5 месяцев назад
Or maybe it was just the timing of the births and the first child with musical inclinations happened to be male. Seems more likely since the mother is the one driving the family dynamic in this case. Sorry for what you went through but confirmation bias is way more of an enemy to the best humanity has to offer than sexism and misogyny ever were.

I was so impressed by Richards music creative styles. Everything he did was just a very unique composition or improvement. Then Karen's voice comes in and like a new musical instrument puts the icing on the cake for Richard. I still listen closely to the piano and how the other instruments come together in each song. Yes, they both were born to complement each other.

Karen loved her family a great deal and her family didn't show that love in return. They didnt care much for her wants/needs. All they wanted was to ensure Richard's well being was met. She was pushed into singing front and center and stopped her from playing the drums (which she wanted and loved ). Everything she wanted to do was stopped in its tracks by her brother/family and also the A&M people. Her opinions obviously didn't matter. Which was really sad. She unfortunately ended up in a situation where she had no say or control and was bossed around by her brother/family and the A&M team. Karen was a very talented individual and was a GREAT singer. Her solo album was very good and if she was still alive her solo career would have surely been perfected.

Uh, and you knew them how? You know nothing about any of these folks. The facts are inconvenient, but here we go: Richard began Spectrum and the trio, he let his little sis participate (my brother would NEVER had done this), he stood up for his sister for the rest of her life, he encouraged her to sing because she was gifted --oh gee, how awful of someone to let a sibling know that she was extremely gifted and should take center stage. You are an idiot and should be banned from making comments.

Fascinating to see one of the Corrs in this piece. A few years back, at work I think, I heard a song on the sound system, a song I did not recognize, but the voice on the chorus I was very nearly convinced was Karen Carpenter. I looked the song up online; it was not Karen...it was Sharon Corr. There are very few vocalists who can evoke KC that closely and Ms Corr is one of them (Gloria Estefan is another)...it would be quite interesting to hear Sharon Corr cover KC...

If they were born to compliment each other then why didn't Richard act like it? He is still defending their dang family to the ground. It makes me so angry to know that she had so much freaking talent and because she never got a say in anything, she felt the only control she had was over her body and it ultimately killed her. Her best friend Frenda Franklin was quoted in the New York Times saying "If anorexia is classified as a young woman's struggle for control, then Karen Carpenter was a prime candidate. The two things she valued most in the world: her voice and her mother's love were exclusively the property of Richard. Atleast she could control the size of her own body." That sums it up right there.

@adriandowningiii8395 3 года назад
Actually, that quote is from the 1996 article in the Times by Rob Hoerburger. That quote is completely faulty as it is impossible for a person to own another person's love as well as impossible to own someone else's voice. Try this page as it includes the stuff most of these things leave out because it wrecks their stories www.theeaceman.com/karenlastdays.html . The ones trying to control Karen weren't her family. Karen's family were the ones that Karen turned to when she had others that were trying to control her. Karen had a great career with A&M Records while Phil Ramone couldn't keep steady clients which was all Phil's fault that he couldn't keep a steady clientele.
@mercuryfever392
@mercuryfever392 3 года назад
@@adriandowningiii8395 What are you talking about? It's totally true. Everyone knows that Richard was the favorite. They made Karen get out from behind the drums to sing because they thought it worked better. Karen always considered herself a drummer who sang. Eating disorders are about control. She couldn't control anything else in her life but she could control her weight.
@adriandowningiii8395
@adriandowningiii8395 3 года назад
@@mercuryfever392 Karen considered herself a baseball pitcher who played drums and sang for a living. You need these two pages here www.theeaceman.com/karenlastdays.html and www.theeaceman.com/rantnrave.html . Originally (1971) they brought Jim Squeglia in and Karen would sing and play drums on the fast songs and during the slow songs, Jim would play drums while Karen sang front stage. In 1972 they brought in Cubby O'Brien and made Karen center stage singing on all songs and added in a drum solo routine with Karen and Cubby. Not everyone is gullible. Some are smart enough to ask questions when things don't seem to add up right. Not everyone who has anorexia is "Starving for Attention" like Cherry Boone and that [blanked] up anorexic profile that doesn't match 80 to 90% of anorexics (Karen included). And gullible as in if someone honestly thinks that people that never knew or met Karen or claim to be best friends but don't seem to know anything personal about Karen and try to 'mind read' and 'second guess' know more about Karen than those that actually did know her than may I interest you in purchasing the Brooklyn Bridge? And with that, Richard had posted a lot on an old computer bulletin board back in the day and saved many of the questions he got from fans on this web site www.richardandkarencarpenter.com and just click on the 'fans ask' button and there are multiple sections and massive amounts of discussions there direct from Richard. This area is a massive treasure trove of accurate information about the Carpenters and personal information about Karen as well. I have checked it all over and it is 100% accurate information. A massive treasure trove. If looking for information, that Fans Ask section is the place to go. Try this page too www.theeaceman.com/goodbyetolovecrock.html and this page too www.theeaceman.com/littlegirlblue.html . And oops, true, Richard was mom's favorite. And more true was that Karen never wanted to be 'favorite' and loved being 'the black sheep'. Favorites follow the rules and have their ducks in a row and all that while black sheep tend to bend the rules and let their ducks wander a bit. So anyone trying to insinuate that Karen was wanting to be a favorite doesn't know Karen at all and probably doesn't know the difference between a burro and a burrow either.

Maybe she would have still been alive today if she would just reliz this for herself. R.I.P Karen.

I was shocked by a recent documentary that her mother & brother (who both controlled her career) "didn't realise how ill she was". Seriously? She was a walking skeleton. Ex record company employee said they also colluded in talking her out of releasing a really great mainly disco solo album. It says it all that she wanted to go solo to me. Richard always came first when these days he'd rightly be relegated to co writer only.
@TheLarryBrown
@TheLarryBrown 3 года назад
#1 The idea that someone would starve/poison/vomit/shit themself to death was not known at the time. Of course it's obvious to you, you're talking 40 years later. #2: It was not "mainly" disco. It featured two or three disco inspired tracks. #3: Carpenters was a gigantic money making machine. It's not hard to think that scores of people wanted to protect it. #4: Richard was 100% of the brains that built an incredible act and sound that shattered the world to this day. He would not be "relegated" to anything. You don't understand that superstar producers like Richard, Mutt Lange, the guys from ABBA, Emilio Estefan, Don Kirschner, Quincy Jones, Phil Spector, and George Martin are at least equal contributors to the final product.

I didn't care for that album at all. It's easily findable here on YT. It sounds dated and I imagine it did when it would have come out. Another example of that dated sound is Marvin Gaye's "I want you" the sofa video vs the yucky album version. The 1st is a million times better. Bad sound and all.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sarah. And unfortunately, those thoughts are based on stuff that is poorly researched and many pieces of information are left out that contradicts the 'story' certain ones are wishing to tell. Try this page for a fuller picture of what happened with Karen based on her autopsy report and a person that knew Karen very well and actually talked with Karen instead of 'second guessing' and 'mind reading' that most of those crockumentaries thrive on. www.theeaceman.com/karenlastdays.html . And as an example here, everyone knows that Karen had developed hepatitis from having a tattoo removed in mid to late January 1983 or didn't they? And so much more...

With every interview I see of Richard, I want to hear him just talk about her as his sister, yet it does seem nearly all of his talk of her is of the music. She was definitely a cog in a very successful machine. "The Carpenters", the mega successful act clearly was the priority. Just doesnt quite hit right for me.

Karen, her voice was superb, but towards the end when she died, how could they not see she was dieing, I was shocked when I saw her do a British show, she look terrible, when people said she was getting better at the end, it was to late, her heart could not take anymore, and a autopsy report on Karen said, she was still taking a lot of laxatives at the end!!!!! Was it her controlling mother, was it because she was not the favourite, was it because she was pushed from behind the drum??? One thing I do know, if her family never got involved with her doctor, did ask him how they could help, then really she was lost!!!! 🐩🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

How many matriarchal families are there? A lot. How many have sibling issues as well as parent-child issues? A lot. Most people grow up and get out of it. She died at 32. She had plenty of time to get straightened out, but for some reason didn’t even when it became obvious she had a serious problem and while several people were trying to get her to help herself. It’s hard to help someone who won’t take personal responsibility for her problem.

+Allen M. Quinn COMPLETELY agree. She knows nothing about any of the family members. Anorexia is extremely complex: we really don't know what causes it, but if every dysfunctional family produced an anorexic daughter, there would be more anorexics than not. Now the evidence suggests a strong genetic component. The fact that this idiot therapist who has NEVER MET any of the Carpenters thinks she has anything to say is simply absurd.

I think the idiot she married really helped her not care. It cost her over a million to get rid of him! Creepy he looked a whole lot like Richard...she knew he was an ASS before she married him, and good ol Agnes, the dragon lady, as called by their friends basically tried to force her into it. I think had she said NO a few times, she'd still be alive. You're waiting for your family to love and help you, many of you reading will be waiting a long, LONG time for their approval. Don't go to the hardware store to buy oranges, dig? It means, don't go places to get things they don't have. Btw, she, Moon, and Bonham all had the same, exact drums and died at 32. She would have benefitted from using her middle finger a lot more often. Not like they were going to dump her. The reason you get anorexic is by believing that all your problems are from "being too fat." In a nutshell.

Try this www.theeaceman.com/karenlastdays.html . I appreciate your comments and insightfulness. There is a bit more though as some things weren't made public and the big one that a lot of that psychobabble type stuff trying to make Karen appear to be like Cherry Boone and her book "Starving for Attention" just don't hold up in the real world so a lot of information has been purposely left out or altered or stories cut short by those telling stories rather than what actually happened. As an example here, the publicly released autopsy (17 pages) tries to support claims of anorexia (while Karen is listed as having a normal weight of 108 pounds?) while the full autopsy report (25 pages) negates the anorexia claims while showing that Karen passed away from a diabetic coma (Toxicology report has Karen's glucol [blood sugar] level at above 1100 which is fatal).
