Love it! We used those window guards when I was an over the road truck driver. They do work and it makes a difference. Great job thinking outside the box!
Great video! You're the only one I've seen build a sleeping platform with that much cargo space. Glad to see you can still get in, as that was my main concern with building a platform so high up. Definitely stealing your 2x6 extension support idea.
I did the same hack for my side windows with the vents like that. I now want to try making something for the very back leaving the hatch part up and the tailgate closed so I can get more ventilation for the summer months.
I’ve been thinking of doing this for awhile. I actually have the Tuffy secure enclosure (newer model), and your plywood design is pretty much what I was thinking! Thanks for the great video so I could see my plan realized!!👍🏼
Nice Currently have a 02 tj. We (wife & I) have been thinking on a jk 4 dr this yr. For this reason. Try 1 1/2 16 ga square tubing. The plywood is excellent. This jeeps have several retention spots for anchoring. Use hinges There are also moving blankets about this size... running @ 4.00 ea at harbor freight. Subded... looking forward for more ideas!
First time subscriber and camper/hiker myself and I liked your video and your setup on your Jeep! Looks awesome! Can’t wait till the next video! This is Big Boy Frank from Texas! Peace out ✌🏼
Great setup. You should add a 6" memory foam mattress to that setup though... your backs will thank me later lol. Been there done that. For the $100 or so spent on a cheap memory foam mattress it made it that much nicer.
Hey I did the same thing with my 2014 JKU. Built mine exclusively out of plywood. I went ahead and took the rear seat out, that freed up loads of room for heavy gear such as a Yeti all my food just about everything keeps the center of gravity low. I have a tiny roof rack for large light objects, (traction mats a shovel and a cople of chairs, but everthing else fits outa sight under the bed. You are the only other person I've seen do a vid on this. Got the memory foam from Walmart. Been sleeping in it like that for years. I'll do a walk around and link it to you. good job.
Very innovative setup dude, nice pick on the color of your yeep, by the way I'm a big jeep fan, to bad they still don't have the m- series mil- jeeps, an believe me, me an 2 other dudes use to put them together out of the crate in 1 day, wish I could find one in a crate these days.
Sweet. You can do for 100 easy if you have a buddy or work in a shop to get 2x4 free and bolts and offer up for boards. I made a back shelf for my 95 yj. I wish I could share pics but I'll be making a video of how it looks in near future
Finally, been looking for a vid like this. I’m tired of seeing those ugly popup tent on the top. Maybe I might change my mind about them when I want more space/storage area but for now, I don’t find them attractive
Fantastic & Simple set-up for a Jeep! I really like that you can adjust it to have a 3rd passenger. Way to go Airman! Now just add one of those Owl Security Monitors to prevent future break ins and you're G2G!
I'd suggest just putting a 15%-5% tint on the back and rear windows instead of curtains. No one will be able to see in, it will decrease the heat inside your jeep and it looks cool.
This was awesome! I'm in the market for a new Wrangler. I'm deciding between a Gladiator or the Unlimited but definitely love this idea. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed it! I modified my Gladiator when I got it to do the same overlanding aspect as my wrangler. Knowing what I know now with my lifestyle I have I would choose the Wrangler Unlimited over my Gladiator, but that's just me. do a lot of research! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sqs9sH-7Ncs.html
Good video, I like the screen idea. We sleep in our 2015 2 dr JK (bed is at the same height) on top of a security box with bed panels that deploy fwd from the box. Pillows are against the seats pushed to the dash. A lot of posts say it's too short, I'm 6-2, my wife is 5-9.. works for us.. and there's plenty of storage too. My only complaint, I can't carry my 400 lb MC on the hitch.
Hey brother great videos hope you keep them coming. A bit of advice though...you should blip out your license plate number as there are a lot of crazies out there. With your background in the military you know that OPSEC and PERSEC is just as important as situational awareness. God bless brother.
Really cheap and very convenient set up. This is the way to go in my opinion. I see people spending thousands of dollars on a similar set up just to add a little comfort.
Cool setup. I'd probably went with the rooftop tent myself. It'd be a little more costly but i think you'd be more comfortable. For the cost tho, it is a nice setup.
little advice, make sure to cover your license plates. you never know whos watching this for the wrong reasons. oh and thanks great video you definitely gave me some ideas!
Very helpful video! Super clear. All I was looking for to go hiking and sleep inside my Jeep. Thank you! The only thing I would like to find just like yours in plastic, is the window vents. I only found one online for Jeep Wrangler made by Billetworkz but they are $125.00. I would like to find them cheaper! Enjoy your trips!
YAAAASSSSSSS! Thank you SOOOOOO very much for this vid! Exactly what I was looking for (and debating for weeks now....). :D It's Winter here in Ohio, I recently almost had a 'Smash n Grab', I believe, with my 2018 4-Door JKU (Driver side glass, front door... not even 'Slash n Grab' w/ my perma soft top...). I was VERY lucky to approach a suspicious character outside of a Wallymart just in time. Uhhhh, he was lucky too, he left when he saw me coming... ;) I've been contemplating a solution and trying to figure out best options for my upcoming intentions. I acquired the Tuffy security storage product already having seen it several times in the past and will be installing (especially now that I've seen this vid :) shortly here. My HUGE debate was this exactly... I've seen several low, med, and high level sleeping platforms for the JKU Jeep as I intend to do ALOT of camping this year while sleeping in my vehicle. I had a personal debate as to functionality, storage, open-air jeep security, and actual sleeping space (average guy, 6 ft.). Of course, Jeep Religion = top off, empty vehicle. You helped me solidify my plans for the Spring, I'm doing 100% delete in the back and intend to build a platform that compliments the Tuffy box and affords me additional storage from the rear doors and a comfortable sleeping space. Your video proved to me that it was possible and gave me a general idea of the sleeping space vs. security/storage that I was concerned with. Again, THANKS a ton for your info! Jeep Wave, -Bob
Glad I could help. That was exactly the intention of this video, to throw out ideas and show what worked for me. You probably will be able to make some modifications to my set up to make it better and cater to your needs.
Cool set up man. I use to run the gutter guard too, but then it started to get too hot. I know use a Mesh window Sunshade that slides over the rear and front doors, and covers all of the window. So now I can roll down the entire window and not worry about the bugs, also helps with the sun. They’re made for children in the back seats. Only $15 on Amazon for 4, check them out.
I swear you could be my little brother... look like me, think like me, and even did the window vent thing I made for my FORD Explorer back in 06. Lol Superb Minds Think Alike...
Have you ever thought about removing the back seats? Seems like you could gain a lot of storage space from an area that is wasted since you never use the seats.
I’m curious how tall are you? Im 5’8” and although I sleep in my 2019 wrangler too with seats all the way forward but my feet do hit the tailgate. I find that annoying. I wish the front seats could go forward just another inch or two. I would imagine in order to do this I would have to install a custom seat slide that’s longer. I also wish I could remove the headrests in the back seat to permit more space below the seats when they are down.
Thank! It's an all wool over jacket. VERY Warm and worth the money in my opinion. Here's the link- lrbushcraft.com/lester-river-bushcraft-100-wool-boreal-shirt-anorak/
The gutter guard concept is great for staying cool during the summer. How do you stay warm in the winter? My semi has a bunk heater but they are very expensive (I don't own the truck). Is there ways to stay warm without idling all night?
We have talked about a heater set up of some kind. we have good sleeping bags at the moment. I looked into to Mr Heater gas heater and getting a cabon monoxide detector just in case of issues when we sleep.
Wool blankets for starters, base insulation or good bags rated for at least 30deg lower than expected temps. We regularly crash in the back of a soft top JKU with 2x toddlers in sub freezing temps - Coldest so far is low teens. Look into cabin heaters like they use in the van life vids. On diesels, many in colder environments use a wabasto diesel powered coolant system heater that you can also use for cab heat.
I’ve been looking to buy window venting online, around $300 is average, then I saw your video and I’d prefer to make them myself. Was wondering if you could let me know where you got the materials? Thanks great video! Subscribed
Excellent setup. I've thought of doing something similar for the times I don't want to haul my teardrop. But I think I'll try sleeping with my head to the back of the Jeep. It may offer a bit more room. Thanks for the video.
This is what i used. I just painted it black. www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-3-ft-Snap-In-White-Gutter-Guard-85270/100009044 It doesn't Exactly clip to your window but it does hold firmly. It has a Y grove that you put the edge of your window in and you slowly roll your window up to provide pressure on the gaurd.
