I'm having a blast out here in these snowy conditions! The storm has increased in intensity so I hunkered down at camp with my furry adventure pal, Sierra, for the day. I'll be camping here for another few days before rolling on to a different location closer to where some other friends are camping. I LOVE WINTER CAMPING SEASON, really glad it's here!

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OFF-GRID AND SELF SUFFICIENT HOMESTEADING
Definition of "Off-Grid": Off-the-grid or off-grid is a characteristic of buildings and a lifestyle designed in an independent manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. The term "off-the-grid" traditionally refers to not being connected to the electrical grid, but can also include other utilities like water, gas, and sewer systems, and can scale from residential homes to small communities.
Self-sufficient means needing no outside help in satisfying one's basic needs, especially about the production of food, and homesteading means living a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. So by those definitions, the key to homesteading is learning to be self-sufficient.

Kinda cool how a dog will just live wherever you go or wherever you are, be it in a house or a tent, they are just with you, and where makes no difference.

I am youngest girl of 5 kid family. We spent many weekends out camping as a big family. Even after all us kids moved Away & got married, we would still get together to go camping. I'm 40s now & miss it so much. I'm lucky because I do live in rural area of WA state & only a 35-40 minutes drive from mountains so camping has always been a past time. I still try to my husband & kids to go out once a year or two. You never get too old for camping...you just need softer mattresses😂❤

For some reason theres nothing like camping in the winter, especially when it snows. The fire just has a extra level of soothingness too it besides the obvious increased comfortability of it. Plus in my opinion going on dawn walks while it snows in the forest is one of the most relaxing, beautiful things you can do in nature.

@@anns1921 Well, I would enjoy a dog company there while in a tent, but I wouldn't want to adopt a dog just for this experience. Part of my strategy in life is to have fewer irreversable commitments and either dog or a child is a form of that commitment, where once you commit to it you can't change your mind, you're now responsible for it until the rest of their life. Having either lowers your freedom and mobility. Having a pet is like a mini version of having a child (I had a dog for 15 years). I loved it a lot and I still keep its food bowl where it was, but I now want neither children nor pets.

@@danielevergreen1133 You have no idea how shallow that sounded huh
@danielevergreen1133
@danielevergreen1133 3 года назад
@@ObfcrewOz Shallow in what way? Firstly, my childfree position is based on two core beliefs: that having children has worse outcomes both on group level and on individual level. I'm a utalitarian. Thus, I believe that every decision is either good or bad, based on its outcomes. On group level, either the world needs more people or it doesn't. In other words, either it becomes a bit better, as more people are added, or it becomes a bit worse. Some estimate that the optimal number of people is 1.5 to 2 billion, which is 4 times the current amount; in any case, it's hard to argue that the wold needs even more. So as more and more people are added, it becomes a bit worse. Isn't the definition of "selfishness" doing something at the expense of the group? If you make the world a bit worse with that decision, what are you? So I hope I've convinced you that not having children is, at the very least, not selfish, and, furthermore, it can be argued that having children is. I'll even mostly skip the common elifist position, which I don't subscribe to, but resonate with, that existince is not inherently good for the thing that exists. But, to give you a taste of it, my dog had congestive heart failure. It means that it was slowly dying. As heart fails, it starts to suffocate because fluid build-up in the lungs. I had to make the decision at what point my dog's life becomes worse than living, and it will require euthanasia to end its suffering. "Interesting" question, right? At what point does suffering from living starts to become worse than pleasure of living? If somebody were to live with a cloth over their face, and slowly more and more water is added to it, as they are getting waterboarded alive, and the only future prospect is only more water getting added, then at what point being alive becomes worse than being dead? At what point do you suffocate alive too much? Had to make those decisions several times in my life, not a big fan of that question. Have you had a depression? A lot of people have and they have to make a decision whether their suffering is worse than the pleasure they get from living. Have you even been dying from cancer? When you die from cancer, as my relatives were, there also comes a point where you have to think about similar things. So even beyond the group level, there's no guarantee that for any individual, their existence is better than them not existing at a point in time. Furthermore, many argue that that point is much closer than that, to the point that making concious beings is immoral from the start. Plenty of common philosophical traditions view life as mostly suffering, most prominent being Buddhism. To them, even seeking pleasure is a form of suffering. I don't necessarily agree with them, but I just wanted to illustrate that it can be argued that existence is not inherently good and thus creating children or pets is not inherently good. On an individual level, children make people less happy, as shown by science over and over again (so-called parenting happiness gap). So imagine that somebody is selfish and they want to contribute to the world becoming increasingly overpopulated. Well, science shows that it won't even make them individually more happy than they would be without children. But it is already a fat comment, so I'm going to stop at this. So, by irreversable commitments, I mean exactly this. Imagine having children and then recognizing that it is not good for anybody: it derailed your life and made you less happy than you could have been, and it made the world only a bit worse. You can choose a bad job, and leave it, you can choose a bad relationship and leave it. But if you bring another conscious creature into this world, you can't undo it. I think it is okay to recognize that some moments are absolutely better with that creature, despite that, as a whole, the cummulative price payed might not justify those moments. By the price, I mean both on the group level (in case of a pet, contributing to pets being bred) and on the individual level (the personal price of having to take care of that creature, the life mobility it takes away from you, and then having to slowly watch it die).

Hello there, The longest time i ever spent living in a tent was back in 1984 when i was 17 yoa for around 16 week's...as i recall i stayed in a place called Tolka valley in north west county Dublin off the now M3 arterial route as it was still in it's wild rural state back then. I had only became aware of this beatiful place a year before when i moved from Ballymun just 2 mile's south of Dublin Airport. It had it's up's and down's as I had not realised that the Tolka river is a tributory system that run's into Dublin Bay and tend's to flood now and again mainly in late fall. Anyway I send my Best wishe's to you and your Best Freind and i hope she pull's trough.

@Mike OBrien , Hello Mike...it's a good 37 year's ago since i had that adventure. I was alone at night but i got regular visit's from family member's of my own generation. I had a two man tent and a tarp for extra protection...also i used some dead branches too. And i always only had small fire with a block so no light could be seen at night. The location is about 1mile west of Blanchardstown village close to Mullhudart last town before you cross into County Meath.

Looks like you have solved the biggest problem of living in a tent especially in winter. Keeping mud and snow OUT !

I was thinking "I know this spot" and then he said here in Salida. Now I'm convinced I know the spot.

There’s a spot closer to the lake out there that’s you walk down about 1500 feet and it comes out to a ridge on both sides while your facing the east makes for a pretty bad ass sunrise
