You have the concept of downshifting and using engine as a brake exactly right. With lower weight applications like you have, engine brakes are not required! Great video!

"Jake Braking" using the engine compression to slow you down by downshifting. VERY helpful on downhill gradients as you pointed out, long downhills with extensive braking can overheat and glaze your pads making them inefficient. Lots of small towns have "No Jake Brake" signs at city limits cause it cn cause backrapping (popping) out a big diesel exhaust.

Billy, your comment about using a lower gear to save your brakes is absolutely correct. It does put more stress on the engine and less on braking components. But, the engine can take that sort of stress, especially in a lower gear. So, no worries!!! Keep on trucking 🚚!!!

Billy, what you say doesn't matter, it's what Sierra hears that matters. Just get used to it, it will make your life easier. Those tunnels aren't too bad you can see the other end of both of them. Wait until you get to the Eisenhower tunnel around Leadville.

My wife and I did a road trip in 2020 after COVID changed out plans. Loaded the truck with tent and gear and hit the road. Amazing how many free camping sites there are once you get out of the south east!! We traveled from Atlanta up to Iowa, across South Dakota and into Wyoming. Yellowstone and Tetons blew my mind. Wyoming became our favorite state as well. Cheers!

i just took my 99 24v to colorado with my rooftop tent ....i just clicked the OD off button when going down some of the larger hills and then sometimes even put her in second coming outta winter park on the switch backs. she handled like a champ!

I been living out motorhome since 69 in 28 ft called dodge b210 no no Winnebagos or anything like that you had to go to Dodge dealership to get parts for anything there was no Camping World yes you had to roff it 4 more motorhome to this day

General rule of thumb is that the gear you would use to go up the hill is the gear you should use to go down the hill with heavy vehicles

Yes, a lower gear will save your brakes. It not only makes ur brakes last longer. But if you ride your brakes going down a hill it will cause them to heat up, potentially causing brake failure... Don't want that going down hill.

While you might not be a professional trucker, you do have a very real sense of practical logic. You are right with your deductions about reduction of friction on the brakes and overheating the disks from over use... Great decision process...

So glad to see you get off the Interstate and see the country by back roads. Leaving a car in gear while going down hill is just "engine braking". It does relieve the load on the wheel brakes but you have to remember that you need to learn what is hard on the transmission so that you don't damage it as well. It is a LOT more expensive to repair than your brake pads. But never coast down a long hill with your transmission in neutral. You need to have a heavy vehicle under control at all times. You have a lot of beautiful sights ahead of you and you won't be sorry to visit any of it. If you go into Yellowstone, try to exit out the north entrance. It is unique scenery!

Yea, I downshift in mountains to control speed and save breaks. I figure the engine can take a lot of high rpms (not in red zone ever) for days while the brakes are much weaker. Go for it. The sign of brakes getting too hot? I don't know,.,never been there, of course if they smoke, you've gone too far. Then I'd get them looked at for safety.

so I travelled from mobile alabama on my harley to Yellowstone park and beyond last year! on the way home I rode through big horn in august and it was amazing! reaching the peaks with 63 dg temps in id aug is crazy!

There's no snow so I imagine this video isn't "caught up", but if you're still in Wyoming, I recommend the hot springs in Thermopolis- a shortish jog off the path to Cody - pretty stunning. Also, don't miss going through GreyBull on your way to Cody, gateway to Yellowstone, stop by Hawkins & Powers. They are an aerial firefighting contractor and have an amazing graveyard of old military and civilian use aircraft. It's where the C-119 "Boxcar" airplane is based. It's the plane used in Flight of the Phoenix remake, the one with Dennis Quaid (my hubby was on that crew - flying). They flew the Boxcar to Africa and back from Greybull, Wy. The field is absolutely mind boggling and quite a historical picture of aviation.

I use engine braking not only for down hill, I use it when slowing down for lights, stop signs etc. Just ease off the gas a little earlier and shift gears down early and just a slight hold on the brakes so the brake lights are engaged. My brake calipers and discs last soooo much longer and remain in optimal working conditions for much longer.

Just found your vlog and have been enjoying the vids of your trek out West. I lived in Colorado (I'm back in Mass. now) and spent some wonderful trips in and around there and visiting NPs from the Grand Canyon up to Glacier. (Did the horse back ride in the Tetons with my 11 y/o grandson). I totally get your exuberance and joy of being out there. Keep doing what your doing and doing it the way you are. It's good, if you have the time, to see the 'tourist' sights in the parks but getting away from the crowds to be more in tune with nature is the best way to enjoy it. Don't know if you have been or plan to go to Glacier NP but it us so worth it. Had my closest bear encounter there. I have so much more I want to say and share with you but know that's unrealistic. Keep enjoying life to the fullest. BTW: I'm 75 years old, still biking, skiing etc and have been in all 50 states, 3 Mexican states, 5 Canadian provinces/territorys, 6 European countries (3 while hiking around in the Alps) and Australia. Don't plan on stopping any time soon. 😘

Absolutely downshift for braking purposes going downhill, and if it is long and steep, downshift more than once, perhaps down to first even. Then turn on 4-way flashers to warn others you are going slow, because no brake lights will warn them. The engine's compression will serve to brake your way, opposite to 'giving it the gas' when accelerating. Safe travels and thanks for the entertainment while keeping it real and as honest as you can be on you tube.

Driving on mountain roads always gives me great feeling either going slow to enjoy the scenery or fast blasting through corners, the later not being recommended with the rig you are driving. Going downhill, always use engine break as much as possible. It works better with a diesel engine - high compression- and manual gearbox - no slip from the torque converter. Brake fade is not something you want to experience. The break pedal can get so mushy that there is no breaking at all. You are suddenly becoming the hero of an action movie trying to slow down the escape car that was sabotaged by the villain! I have been looking at touring the USA in an off road camper van for a long while and your videos makes it even more tempting. Thanks a lot! Cheers from Singapore.

Billy!! You are correct about using your transmission to slow down going down hills. Use the column shifter just like a standard transmission. Downshift on steeper declines, help save your brakes. I tow a travel trailer, your basically doing the same but your weight is riding with you, in effect like a motor home. Just down shift on the big down hills. When in 4x4 you can use 4low and it will really slow you down. Good luck! Awesome travels and adventures! Have fun while your young. Happy trails……

Yes Billy, regards driving a heavily laden truck downhill the general rule of thumb is to descend with the truck locked in the same gear you would use to ascend or climb the hill. Then just use the brakes to stop the engine from over-revving and to control your speed. Means you will be driving a lot slower but you'll have more control, it's much easier on your brakes, reduces the risk of brake fade and makes it easier to stop if things do go wrong.

If you like boondocking check out the free water management sites in Florida on here .You can use lower gear just watch your RPM and keep it under 2500 to not stress your engine .

Older vehicles sometimes don't apply brakes evenly between front and rear brakes. Going down a muddy hill, you don't want to lock up your front tires 'cause you lose steering. So if in 2-wheel drive, engine compression in a low gear will help slow vehicle using rear wheels. You can then use a light touch also on the brakes. You can always engage 4-wheel when needed if you have hubs locked or however the system works in the particular vehicle.

Yes, engine braking is just downshifting the transmission to use the compression of the engine to slow the vehicle. An exhaust brake “Jake brake” is used to slow the vehicle as well, but much noisier. I’ve found that downshifting and using brakes momentarily has worked well, but you have a lot more weight than I ever had.

Down hill using the engine & Trans to slow your vehicle is ref. to as "Engine Braking". Deceleration by down shifting. In Texas you'll see signs entering small towns which say= No engine braking. Causing a lot of noise. Your vehicle is very loud. Needs another muffler to make it quiet. Would also make for nicer sleeping for Sierra while your driving.

Worst thing you can do is ride them. Best to let’s say , 65 down to 55. Rather quickly 15-20 seconds then let speed build again then hit them again for 15 to 20 seconds. Never hold steady or light pressure for long periods. Or like you were saying. Drop into a lower gear and let engine help slow you down.

Tow haul mode if it has it. Reduced gear. Reduced speed.. speed is your biggest factor when it comes to burning up your breaks.

Just saw your channel. Having had both truck and pull behind campers. It is worth getting the actual extra brake system installed and learn how to use it. We have had friends have the not fun experience of more than just squishy brakes- easy way to blow a transmission in a heavy loaded camper. The grades are just to much for just your regular truck breaks. You don’t want to experience loss of breaks .

Sierra, your reaction to seeing the mountains was similar to mine when I saw saguros for the first time. Prior to that experience I had only seen them in cartoons. Thank you for sharing your adventures. My bucketlist keeps getting longer and longer!

I ran a 6 gauge wire from my battery to a fuse block under the hood and continued the wire back to the bed of my truck. I stripped out the positive wire from my camper factory wiring and used an Anderson plug for a dedicated positive wire this allows more current to travel to the camper instead of running the smaller wires of the 7 pin plug. Make sense? I can run my fridge on 12 volt now while I drive without it draining my battery. Also my alternator is charging my house battery easier because of the larger gauge wire.

For your pork fried rice, use long grain rice as it will fry up better and be less sticky. Also cool your veggies to Adante or just long enough for them to turn a bright color, but still crunchy. To be honest I would use a Jasmine rice or a Basmati rice. They have really awesome taste on their own. Also, I didn't see you put the rice into the pan and actually fry it after you cooked it? Make sure to do that too. Other than that, it still looked good, just some tips on how to make it less mushy.

I drove trucks across Wyoming for years. I'd look over at the Rockies and I didn't think they looked that high. Oh yeah, then I remembered I was at over 6000 feetjust driving along.
