Hi guys,
In this video, I discuss what it's like living in Alberta. I list out the benefits of the province of Alberta with regards to the standard of living, cost of living in Alberta, taxes, employment in Alberta, transportation in Alberta, and some other factors to consider when moving to Alberta.
I compare and contrast Edmonton Vs Calgary. I hope this will help you decide to move to Alberta and what city you would prefer.

In the three years pre-Covid, North American Construction moved from Calgary to Edmonton; Aurora Cannabis moved from Vancouver to Edmonton; Flair Airlines also moved from B.C. to Edmonton; Google Deep Mind (AI) opened it's first office outside London in Edmonton; Improbable Worlds (gaming) (another Google affiliated company) also opened its (now) largest office outside London in Edmonton; three Chinese companies (E.H. Logistics, WeFaces, Lightbox) have opened their sole North American bases in Edmonton, and Edmonton based Stantec Engineering took over MWH, thus becoming the 7th largest engineering/design company in the World. All of those companies chose Edmonton ahead of Calgary and Vancouver. Edmonton leads Canada in engineering, nanotechnology, AI, and cannabis, the latter three among the most important growth industries, and is ahead of both Calgary and Vancouver in all tech not related to O&G or visuals production. Edmonton is also ahead of Calgary in tourism and has the all the top 4 Alberta based financial institutions' headquarters. Since 2012, Edmonton has been the fastest growing CMA in Canada, and since 2015 the Edmonton CMA has had both the highest GDP per capita and the highest disposable income in Canada. Calgary has the fossil fuels industry and is the last top-ten city in Canada that votes right wing.

Outdoor enthusiasts are at home in Edmonton too tho. The river valley is wonderful for hiking, ice skating trails, cross country ski. Edmonton As 4 ski resorts within the city limits alone. Amazing mountain biking trails, and kayaking and canoeing opportunities no more than a 10-minute drive from any home in the city. Apart from the chinooks, average temperature differences in the winter are often inconsequential! I love Calgary too tho.

Many of the comments I see here bash Edmonton, but I don't see much in the way of bashing Calgary. Most people see Edmonton as the under dog city to Calgary and this is true in some respects, but it is not that simple. When it comes to weather, there are advantages and drawbacks to both cities. Calgary does get more frequent and pronounced Chinooks than Edmonton, but we regularly see the tail end of them. Calgary sees some nasty hailstorms in summer that completely miss Edmonton. Calgary may be close to the mountains, but Banff is a write off if you want peace and quiet and not too many crowds in the mountains. Banff is gorgeous, but who wants to ski there, when it's parked down to the Trans-Canada or Lake Louise is only accessible by shuttle in summer? Jasper is not 5 hours from Edmonton, under good weather and traffic, it's 3 1/2 - 4 hours. I would rather do that drive and have breathing room on the trails and ski slopes. Edmonton might be boring compared to some bigger cities, but when it's not pandemic times, we have one festival after another, many concerts and sports events. Calgary may have better public transit and a better road/freeway system overall, but they paved over large sections of their river valleys. Edmonton had the foresight to not destroy its river valley and we ended up with the largest urban park system in North America. Edmonton is not the most glamorous city, but people do not know or overlook the positive aspects. Calgary may be internationally ranked higher in measurements such as corporate head offices and design of the road system, but it is not that simple. One city is not better than the other, they are different with different pros and cons in each one. Saying either city is superior to the other is a point of view and not a fact.
@yingju8217
@yingju8217 3 года назад
I deeply like your conclusion. I guess living in both cities for several years is the best way to learn which city suits one's need better.
@teekbooy4467

Both cities suck edmonton fared a little better when it comes to jobs. Both cities are too cold. If you want a better weather better jobs move to america
@yingju8217
@yingju8217 3 года назад
@@teekbooy4467 Thank you so much for giving the useful suggestion. I appreciate it. I am at the beginning stage of looking for a good place. Your idea reminds me Canada is only one of the possibilities and I should look for a larger spectrum.
@Davemeister22
@Davemeister22 3 года назад
@@teekbooy4467 Edmonton and Calgary are on the smaller end of the big city spectrum each with about 1.5 million people. If you want lots more urban action and culture, you can choose a bigger city. That has its downside, since cities with 5 million or more people tend to have abysmal traffic and pollution. As for weather, both cities experience differing levels of brutal winters. The upside is that Edmonton and Calgary have summers that average between 20 - 25C (70 - 80F) and you aren't roasting to death, unlike summers farther south. Most of America might have a better economy than Alberta's failing oil economy, but good luck paying for your health care insurance in the USA if you are of modest means. In the end, you have to evaluate a broader range of factors to determine which place better suits your lifestyle, preferences and finances.
@Davemeister22
@Davemeister22 3 года назад
@@yingju8217 Thanks. Certainly, the best way to evaluate each city is to look at a broad range of facts for both and consider what you prefer. People often jump to bias and don't look at the greater picture.

It is cheaper in Edmonton for housing and gasoline. If you're not a corporate hawk with abundance in pay, You might want to choose Edmonton. That said, both cities are good.
@theghostedfounder
@theghostedfounder 3 года назад
You really did not compare both Cities. You should've just talked about Edmonton and that's it. Calgary has a lot more job opportunities than Edmonton, which is the basis for someone to consider one City over another one. Similarly, new graduates have lower barriers to entry into the labour force than Edmonton based of Alberta Labour Department. Calgary has lots of activities during summer time but most Calgarians will trip outside the City for winter adventures just like Edmontonians do. So when you weight all in, Calgary is by far a better and more resilient City than Edmonton. .. and yes, I am a proud Calgarian who had lived in Edmonton for few years.
@abysworld
@abysworld 3 года назад
I can understand the loyalty to Calgary. And to be honest I prefer Calgary too. But due to crude oil crash, the job market in Calgary is way worse that that in Edmonton. Calgary is also a little more expensive that Edmonton e.tc. I am sure I must have embellished Edmonton more just because I live there, but I did try my best to compare the cities. That being said, I wish I lived in Calgary as opposed to Edmonton so lucky you.

@theghostedfounder

@@wrightbrent73 not related specifically to Calgary though. Alberta competitiveness as a whole is lower and have suffered over the past 8 years so other jurisdictions look more attractive than Alberta and therefore, Companies chose to relocate. Calgary just happens to have more HQs than Edmonton so it’s more notorious.

My experience is that people in Edmonton are more friendly and services are better. People in Calgary are more to them selfs not very helpful. They feel they are upper class with more money.
