In this video, I'm sharing some of the pros and cons of living in Carson City Nevada, and how it differs from living in South Lake Tahoe. I recently moved to Carson City from Lake Tahoe and although I will probably be moving back to Lake Tahoe eventually, I wanted to share what my experience has been like living in the Nevada State Capitol.
If you have some of your own pros and cons you would like to share, comment below!

Question about distance. I'm accustomed to having to deal with horrible traffic in SoCal. So 30 minutes to you is literally nothing to me. I'll often drive 1-2 hrs (in traffic) for hiking or party activities in metropolitan areas. How far away are the younger nightlife areas & hiking and is there ever a time you have to deal with heavy traffic?

I'm a tech entrepreneur and got decieved after a 20 year old marriage. Decided to just vanish and be alone. Spoke to my brother from different mother and he suggested I move to Carson, NV. All the cons you mentioned are pros to me it seems. I'm in my early 40s so I think I have time to start over and be a nobody at a quiet place. Thanks for your info.

Pro #1 Almost no traffic. There are no traffic jams. Your trip takes the same time every day of the year. Pro #2 No lines at Costco or Trader Joes etc. or most places like restaurants. Pro #3 No parking issues and no parking fees! Go anywhere and you will not have any difficulty finding parking spots. Pro #4 Carson City has Home Depot, Lowe's so it is easier to get construction materials/landscape/electrical/plumbing/etc. Con #1 "Relaxed service standards" compared to California. Con #2 Entertainment. It's either Reno or Lake Tahoe. Carson City has no venue large enough for shows. Con #3 Wind. It is very windy most afternoons..full gales many days of the year. (Five year resident)

Since Carson City is full of retired people, I assume that it is very safe. Old people have no (low) energy to rob, rape or scam other people. How is the dating scene for young people in your age group? I visited CC once on my way to Burning Man years back. I live in NYC. Yes, I remembered that city was very pretty and clean.

@BobDiaz123

I consider the very dry air a big plus during the summer. When the temperature is in the 90s, it doesn't feel as bad when the air is dry. Try going to Florida with high humidity and feel the heat. While I'm in Carson City, the drive to the main part of town goes past a cow field. I'm in the city, but it's like I'm in the countryside. After having lived in a major city, the lack of crowds is a refreshing feeling. I can go to a store without seeing mobs of people.

Good evening! Well done video. You hit the nail on the head when you said its a retirement community as i know a few people that have retired there mostly because of cost and weather(not much snow).I can see why a younger person would find it not as interesting as Tahoe.Glad to hear your goal is to move back to the Lake! Yes its close to the lake but there is nothing like waking up and getting coffee and looking out at that beautiful Lake .It doesn't get much better than that. Thank you for the time.

I remember when i was a kid i went with my parents to the casino to eat and there was a bunch of seniors. it felt comfortable. I've seen some people post the cafes too. Those look nice & comfy. Note to Gabriella Viola: While someone has already assisted you by mentioning the Nevada Railroad Museum and its diverse railroad-themed artifacts and activities as a suitable option to add to your list of diversions, you / all should ALSO consider the V&T Carson City Railroad ride. From downtown, driving Highway 50 east, past the Eagle Valley Golf Course, to the Eastgate Depot will put you aboard the vintage steam train. It travels a historic route, eventually past Gold Hill to ultra-historic Virginia City. A wine and cheese reception with the steam engine and coaches stopped high above ultra-scenic Carson River Canyon was offered on a ride I took. It attracted rail fans -- older demographic -- and the wine and cheese crowd -- mixed and younger. Do check it out! Very much enjoyed your report -- visuals and commentary both. Can't wait to come back and check out the wild horses -- no doubt by which time you'll be resettled at the lake.

OMG. This video is surreal. When I lived in Carson City, NV I was essentially the only African American male there. Main Street was like 4 miles long and this beautiful young girl wasn't even born yet. Carson was like Mayberry and with Ron Howard there filming John Wayne's last film "the Shootist" during our senior year, it seemed even more so. I returned for a visit a couple of years ago. I should have left it to my memories and listened to Thomas Wolf who wrote, "You can't go home again."

Carson City is clean and pretty but seems a little quiet. What is the restaurant vibe? How many coffee houses that stay open all day and possibly into the night? It looks dead in Carson City, but it has some charm. If you're interested, most of the Costcos here (SoCal) are hiring now and, from what I hear, the pay is good. Hard to beat Lake Tahoe for beautiful, but the entire region is truly pretty.

I'm attracted by the lack of income tax and estate tax. I'm an Oregonian, where I pay 10% in income tax, and Oregon wants 16% of my estate. This is a huge bite out of what I hope to leave to my loved ones. Oregon also excludes only the first million dollars from estate tax, tying it for first place in the lowest threshold for estate taxation in the whole nation. The heck with that. I want to leave 100% of my estate to my family. One small pleasure of moving to Nevada is the ability to cast my blue vote in this purple state. Conservatives in Nevada bristle at all of the damned liberals moving there to escape California taxes, but I love it.

Nearly everyone who creates videos promoting Carson City downplays the weather aspect of the place. Frankly, the weather is the biggest negative factor of C.C. It's plenty hot in the Summer (mid- to upper-90s most of the time, and occasionally hitting triple digits), and the Winters are unquestionably cold. In the five years I lived in C.C., two of the Winters were quite nasty and seemed almost endless. I got really sick and tired of the constant snowing and wind blowing. . There's plenty of positives about C.C., but Weather is most definitely *NOT* one of them. I have a saying: If it isn't raining, And it isn't snowing, Then the wind is blowing!!

"Ben W," Good luck with your plans to move to an age appropriate city / town. Speaking of 'appropriate' your Comment would have read better by our charming hostess, Gabriella Viola, and viewers if it was limited to: "I think I would get lonely living in a place like Carson City since I'm single. One of the main reasons I want to live in a city with a younger demographic." You see, you clearly get your point across AND allow Ms. Viola the opportunity to respond and share what experiences, expectations she's endured as well as ANY personal information she's willing to disclose. We do know she's a photographer, which is a bonus for RU-vid curious viewing her video(s). Now, to the point: what young, attractive, blonde, married or single, (happily) 'involved' or between relationships, is going to chance exposing her vulnerability by telling the universe, "Oh, I forgot to mention in my report: I live ALL ALONE and as you saw, there's no bars on my bedroom window, so I'm vulnerable as hell, as vulnerable as most young women who happen to be single or not living with relatives or roommates, and / or going through a phase of being unattached. Yup, guess that means I'm 'easy bait.'" "Do you have a family living with you?" is NONE of our business -- UNLESS she wishes to divulge. And since she hasn't already, it's most likely she won't. She needn't.

@@scvandy3129 It wasn't my intention to ask this in a predatory way. It was legitimate curiosity but I get that with the times we live in now, simply being curious and friendly can be perceived as threatening. All the more reason I want to get away from big city life, people are all rightfully paranoid because mental health services don't exist so a lot of crazy people are running around, and the government is more focused on keeping law abiding citizens in line and paying taxes rather than capturing criminals to keep us safe. Now it's our own job to take care of ourselves. I was hurt when I read your comment initially, but then I realized I had done nothing wrong. I only asked a question, and I'm sorry if it 'might' have been perceived as 'creepy' or 'threatening' despite my only asking because I won't be moving with friends/family, so hearing from someone else who executed what I was contemplating that they did so and are happy living alone would have been reassuring to me, but as a guy, I guess I don't see sharing these type of details with others as something I should be concerned with so it never crossed my mind how it might scare someone if I asked that type of question. I had to think a bit before deciding to reply because I don't really feel the need to apologize for being myself and tip toe around / live in the shadows to make other people feel comfortable and safe in the same way minorities had to sit in a different room out of sight because it was the law. My feedback to you is that you should try to trust people more and don't assume that everyone in the world is bad. I'd say over 99% of people are kind, but it's the less than 1% that the media hyper focuses on because it is sensationalist and ultimately ends up driving us all into fear and distrust of one another. I am tired though of trying, and burned out which is why I asked my job for a sabbatical because this mentality is rampant everywhere and I don't think anything I say or do can make a dent in people's perceptions anymore. Have a nice day.

As an athlete you notice you're getting old around 36, 37, 38...unless it's golf which is about 10 years later...in music it's when you realize you don't like nearly everything you hear except what you grew up with...it's when you smile at a young, pretty lady and she gives you a "eww, why are you looking at me old man" look instead of the smile back you remember from younger days. When getting out of the car takes a little longer and a bit more energy...etc, etc.. Getting old is not for wimps

Please check your pronunciation of Nevada, ask a local because your not saying it correctly. (Like a local Nevadan)🙂

well, I'm not a Nevada local Carol and I never claimed to be. I pronounce it the way I was taught, the way most east coasters were taught. I don't need to ask a local how to pronounce it but thanks.

"Carol Bommarito," On behalf of our hostess from the East Coast, "Gabriella Viola," and reading her borderline curt reply I say "touche." . . . Meanwhile, speaking of correctly, you could use some help in spelling when you say: "Ask a local because you're not saying it correctly." You should have typed "you're" NOT "your," please note.

@@scvandy3129 thank you for trying to help me, but I said “you’re” because I used the contraction in place of “you are”

@@carolbommarito9606 NO ONE, myself included, reading your typing of " . . . because your not saying it correctly" would deny your intent was to use the contraction for "you are." They would -- like you could -- simply say you erred in typing "your" instead of "you're." THAT would be the consensus of the RU-vid community.

Biggest negative of Carson City is the quality of restaurants. I came from the east coast and I am shocked that ppl actually accept this level of food. I'm not sure if they don't know any better..but if you're going to own a restaurant you most likely have to have some understanding of culinary quality and taste. Other than that the only other negative is how blighted it feels late fall through winter. Too much brown..not enough green. Oh..and enough with the IPAs..there's not a single restaurant that serves a good German Hefaweis and the Germans perfected beer over the last 600 years.

It's "Wa-show", not "Wa-shoe".,and it's "Nevad-ugh", not "Nev-ah-da". You'll never be considered a local until you pronounce them right.

@@smonkey001 I am currently living in California, and grew up there so I wanted to stay on the west coast. My short list is: St. George/Cedar City, Utah - Flagstaff/Phoenix, AZ - Carson City/Las Vegas, NV They all have their pros and cons, but I'm working on negotiating with my employer to get a fully remote position so I can start traveling to these areas and see if I can see myself settling in one of these communities. Best of luck.

Once when I lived in Sacramento, CA, we used to commute to the High Sierra near every weekend during climbing season. Now that I now live in Reno, I hardly ever peak bag down U. S. 395, with no partners and now too old. I bought a house in Fallon, NV, but I didn't like supporting a red government, and I like Hillary Schieve, so moved back to Reno. Looking for a good roommate, or even a caregiver, and I do hope to get back to some activity, with peak bagging, travel, and dining with exploring.

The plus is it’s slightly cheaper then Lake Tahoe , but not that much cheaper anymore. The minus is you are not in Lake Tahoe and you are in Carson city Nevada. Lol it’s great if your a trump fan as you will be surrounded by his people. Trump makes a huge point of visiting his followers in Carson but no longer goes to Lake Tahoe where he is much less welcome.
