Yes - you can live in Mexico and work in the US. In this video, I interview Marc Miller who shares his experience moving his business to Mexico where he works remotely with clients in the US.
If you are thinking about moving to Mexico before retirement (AKA pretirement) then this video will help guide you to plan how you can earn dollars and spend pesos when working remotely in Mexico.
:00 Great things happen when you earn dollars and live on pesos!
I've found that, on average, things in Mexico cost about half what they cost in the US. And it's possible to get paid in dollars into a US bank account, then transfer those funds into a Mexican bank so you can spend pesos.
Check out scheduleonce.com and calendly.com for managing your calendar across timezones.
We also mentioned Wise (AKA Transferwise) for sending money between US and foreign banks. Using this link supports my RU-vid habit - thanks!: bit.ly/Wise-Brighton
And be sure to subscribe for more videos about expats living in Mexico. ru-vid.com...
Marc's key things to consider when living in Mexico but still working remotely in the US.
4:27 1) Finances
6:57 2) Telephone
8:34 3) Timezones
9:58 4) Internet
13:24 5) Virtual Assistant
14:15 6) Time Blocking for Fun!
You can find Marc at CareerPivot.com or by visiting Lake Chapala Mexico.

I’m 37 living paycheck to paycheck…I live in Tijuana and work in San Diego and let me tell you smthn…I feel like I am retired and just have to work to enjoy myself and live carefree. Cross The Border on a Scooter and go to work…I feel free from “The American Dream”

I love it. When you say "cross on a scooter," do you mean a small electric one that allows you to use the pedestrian lanes, or a regular scooter where you are in with the cars. I assume you have SENTRI to cross if it's the latter.
@alexquintana1031
@alexquintana1031 3 года назад
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico I mean a Motor Scooter that hits the freeway…I do not have Sentri but only Ready Lane..either way I can move in and out of slow lanes to get up front! I enjoy living there people are polite…I grew up in Idaho and people have rude aura’s about them and it’s terrible!
@AlmostRetiredinMexico

Ah - motor scooter. I forgot lane splitting is legal in California and I'm guessing it's either legal or just accepted in Mexico - so you can get through quickly. People in Mexico are just so much more laid back - the total opposite of being rude (which is just growing in the states!) Thanks for your comments!

I really found this video to be super informative & helpful 👏🏼 Seeing both of you being successful with your move definitively motivates me to do the same, especially since I have the advantages of being a native Spanish speaker and having a few distant relatives still in Mexico. Hey! I just discovered your channel. Your guest briefly touched on moving to Mexico while working for a US employer. One thing that people need to be really careful about is that to work legally in Mexico, your employer needs to have 1 of 4 kinds of legal registration. I used to work for a startup and they had no legal presence in Mexico. In order to continue working for them, I would have had to quit being a regular employee and become a 1099 contractor. There are a lot of digital nomads who are committing mail fraud by using a friend or relative's US address and lying to their employer about where they are. If they get caught, their employer could face huge fines, enough to put them out of business if they're not a big company. I decided to quit that job and take another one with a larger company that does have a Mexican presence.

@stevepark4544
@stevepark4544 2 года назад
@@0311andnice Hi Nick, if you're looking to join a company to be able to move to Mexico later, I would check their website to see if they have any offices in Mexico. If it's a large company, there's a good chance they do. You can also check the company's LinkedIn profile to see if they have any employees based in Mexico. In the interview, I would avoid specifics and ask HR what their policies are regarding migration between regions in general. Try to see if anyone's done it successfully. Most large companies generally only do this if you have a specialty that they're having a hard time finding abroad. But some companies (like my current employer) will help facilitate it for other reasons. Good luck!

@@swilhelm3180 My point is that TJ isn't in the US and that it's important to do these things legally. Other countries have different laws. I'm not an immigration or employment lawyer. I was only stating Mexican law as I understand it. I could be wrong.
@stevepark4544
@stevepark4544 2 года назад
@@swilhelm3180 I should clarify that I'm talking specifically about digital nomads who are working for US companies who haven't notified their employer that they've moved and are using an address service to make it look like they're still in the US. If someone's living in TJ and commuting to SD to work, that's different.

Brighton, can you do a video explaining the maintenance and financials of owning a house in Portland and another one in Mexico? I'd be interested in the bills needed in the US when you're in Mexico and the opposite. I know when you're not in one place, there's still utility bills in both places.

Great suggestion. I'm adding it to the list. Briefly, everything in the US is on auto-pay and everything in Mexico is in my calendar so I don't forget to pay. The way I move money from US to my MX bank account is via Bitso, I buy USDC (1 USDC = 1 USD) from any platform like Coinbase or Phemex then transfer to my Bitso account, once I receive the USDC I convert it to MXN (last exchange was at 21mxn per dollar) and offload to my Mexican account, the only fee is the network fee since USDC is an ERC20 token, doesn’t matter how much you transfer the fee is always the same based on network congestion I pay always less than 10 usd and that’s way better then wires or any other services around :)

One of the quirks about the 330 day rule is that being out of the U.S. is not the same as being *in* a foreign country. What the means is that even though you have hopped aboard your sloop John B. and have exited U.S. territorial waters, your haven't necessarily entered another country. So time over water does not count as being out of the U.S.

As a Mexican in Monterrey, where large Mexican corporations are located, I have many Canadian and American friends, even Europeans working and living here. We never thought that you guys could take our jobs. Working for a Mexican company or an American branch as a foreign is totally fine. You can have a decent salary as a professional if you are qualified. My friend is a Canadian engineer working in the automobile industry; he earns even more than in his past position in Canada. There is a lot of trade between Mexico and the USA, and creating a trading company can be a great opportunity. Do not expect to make a living as a labor worker salaries are extremely low compared to the USA.

Hello I dont want to sound stereotypical but do you consider your area safe? I want to move to mexico but obviously keeping safety in mind. Not sure if you have made video but Which areas would you recommend to be safe and not safe
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
I totally understand that question. I feel really safe all the time in La Paz and El Centenario. I walk around after dark alone anywhere downtown. I'd be comfortable with my wife doing the same in the touristy areas (alone at night), but maybe not some of the fringe of downtown. During the day, no problem. I know there are areas that are less safe, but I think they are pretty far from the core of the city, mostly to the south and east. These are areas I've never actually been to. I should definitely do a video on safety. I think you are more likely to fall into a hole in a sidewalk than be robbed ;-) As to other parts of Mexico, the safe areas seem to move around, depending on the cartels. Right now, the area around Mazatlan is supposed to be unsafe because a couple cartels are trying to take over that area. But most cartel violence doesn't involve expats. If you are reading something online, be sure to check the date. La Paz supposedly had the highest murder rate about 5 years ago, but the cartels have worked things out and now it's super safe. I'm sure the same is true in other areas. I hope that helps!

I work from home as a Travel Agent & he is hoping to find an at home job before we move. I love the part about blocking out time for yourself. I just told my husband last week that when we move we are blocking out time for us to go & enjoy/explore Mexico. I don't want to be there & be stuck in the house working all day. Also Thanks for explaining how to move U.S money to Mexico. My only question is, you can't get a Mexican bank account until your a permanent resident correct? What do you do & use to transfer money until then?
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 2 года назад
Congrats on the planned move! I wish I had moved south a lot earlier in life... You can open a Mexican bank account as a temporary resident. Mexico is cracking down on people living here with tourist visas (you can get 6 months the first time you cross, but then if you run to the border to get another 5 months, they may only give you a month or less.) So check out temporary residency. We are semi-retired. I think they like hearing the word "retired" when you try to get permanent residency, but I'm not sure about temp. And you can be a temp resident for 4 years. Otherwise, you can get a Charles Schwab bank account in the US and use your ATM card down here to withdraw pesos and just have cash.

So working remotely and needing to use zoom - I am bumped off frequently, and it is not ok. Not sure if it is the electricity that is unstable or ... I wonder if using a battery for the wifi connection during calls might be a solution. Any advice? And thank you SO MUCH for your youtubes! They have been very valuable to me. If we have troubles on one, it's easy to switch to the other. We have Telmex Fiber as our first connection and Starlink as our backup. I don't find that I have to switch very often at all. 2 Years ago, we have Telmex DSL and MegaCable and had more problems. But things are upgrading fast. Starlink has been great for folks in Mexico!

I don’t have much info, but are you talking about a multinational company transferring you to Mexico, or a US company with no Mexico connection letting you move to Mexico to work from home. I have a video coming up about the former, but the former is more tricky. Especially if the company sells products or services in Mexico. I know a number of people whose bosses don’t know where they are. They use a VPN to make it look like they are in the US. For some reason, none of them want to talk on camera…

I would like to hear more about being resident in Mexico and possibly being subject to Mexican income tax. I know many say they have no income generated from Mexican sources or Mexican investments (eg., rental properties), so they don't need to pay Mexican income tax. But if Mexico is deemed to be your "center of vital interest" as a resident, Mexico can then tax your worldwide income. The US and Canada do this, as do many other countries. Unlike the US, Mexico has very steep progressive income tax rates and few exemptions, so you could quite easily find yourself in a 30%+ marginal tax bracket. US Retirees living off their SS benefits, other retirement annuities or taxable IRA's and who live in Mexico could be subject to Mexican income taxes. Keeping your funds in US financial institutions is not a guarantee of avoiding Mexican income taxes. For US and other retirees the reality is you could be subject to far higher income tax payments, unless your "center of vital interests" remain outside Mexico. How and who defines "center of vital interests" can be a contentious issue. There is a tax treaty between Mexico and the US that many claim eliminates "double taxation", but that's a misread of what this and most other tax treaties do. What these treaties typically do is allow you to offset your tax obligation in one "contracting state" against the other "contracting state". As most know, the US requires US citizens to file and pay taxes on your worldwide income, regardless of residency status. If you are US citizen and deemed a resident for tax purposes in Mexico, the treaty requires you to first pay Mexican taxes on your worldwide income and then offset what you paid in Mexico to what your US tax obligation would be. Unfortunately, Mexican taxes are much higher so you will be pay much more than you would otherwise had you remained in the US. Speaking of this Treaty (US-Mexico), the protocols explicitly state that US citizens receiving US Social Security benefits can only be taxed by the US, regardless of your residency status. The same appears to be true for US Federal, state and local government retirement annuities. HOWEVER, Mexico appears to ignore this provision and claims it can tax your US retirement benefits just like any other income you receive. I don't know if a US citizen deemed a Mexican resident taxpayer can invoke these treaty provisions to avoid Mexico taxing you on your US retirement benefits. If anyone has first-hand knowledge of this please reply below. I know many cross-border tax preparers offer services to US citizens, but their expertise generally applies to how to pay your US taxes on a 1040NR form. Often these tax professionals will tell you they don't advise on filing Mexican tax returns, only the US return. Honestly, that's not very helpful if you happen to be a US citizen living in Mexico.

This is called gentrification. To anyone moving to another country calling yourselves expats: you are _immigrants._ You aren’t special, and do not expect to be treated that way. Learn the language, pay taxes and contribute to that country’s society instead of being in a Starbucks with your laptop. The locals are fed up with “digital nomads”. I don’t blame them. It’s ok to visit, but to live there and earn wages from your home country, and not pay taxes for the country you are in? Whole other story. There are signs in CDMX that say “if you are working remotely, we don’t want you”. I’m not trying to be a jerk, but I am trying to be honest here.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico

Are you living in Mexico or the US? What is the difference between an immigrant and an expat? I think an immigrant is someone living in a country where they were not born, and an expat as someone living in a country where they were not born.
@koltindriver5935

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico To answer your question: 1. I live in Canada and was born a Canadian citizen 2. The difference is that when a foreigner moves into the USA, they are called immigrants, but if it is an American moving into a foreign country, say Mexico, then they are an expat. It just seems unfair to call someone coming into the US an immigrant, but call someone from the US or Canada going into another country an expat. What makes us so special? Besides, Mexicans, particularly those from CDMX, are getting fed up with the gringos moving in and driving up the prices of everything. I hope this answers your question. Thank you. I apologize if that came across as rude, as it was not intended to be rude.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico It's happening in Mexico City and other popular tourist states. Many Mexicans are really upset over it. They are losing their businesses and homes because of it. The U.S. remote workers are also not respecting the culture or language. They are just looking for a cheap place to live. This is very disrespectful to the culture and harmful to the local communities. I've been seeing posts on social media of Mexicans that are putting signs up in their towns for these types of individuals to leave. It's clear they are not wanted there. I don't feel comfortable telling you where I live. All you need to know is that I'm Mexican and I don't support the harm these individuals are doing to our country; which btw has been struggling since the Europeans invaded it. What these folks are doing is called Modern day Colonialism and it needs to stop.

@@MonicaODuarte Thanks again for sharing. I'm definitely interested in doing a story on this, but I'm looking for someone who can speak from more than personal opinions (both pro or anti extranjeros.) Clearly, there are positives and negatives when gringos move to Mexico. There are areas where the negatives are more extreme and ways for people to minimize those negatives. So I'm hoping to be able to present this in a meaningful way.

Ok gringos its fine if you wanna move in to Mexico. Which is not fine is that many gringos do not want to integrate themselves to the mexican culture. First of all you must speak spanish period, or at least try to learn it, second of all you're not more important than the locals here, third of all you must respect the traditions and customs. We mexican are getting pretty mad about those who come here specifically people from the states and have that superiority sense to the point where they act in a very disrepectful ways. Only grindos do that other nationalities dont!!! Other than that, everyone is welcome!!

That's for sharing. Those of us from the states (and Canada) who move to Mexico because of the culture - and the desire to be part of that - are also sick of the self-centered people from the states (and Canada) who are coming down now. I keep adding Canada because I've seen a different type of Canadian start to move to Mexico over the past few years. They are just as rude as the rude Americans.
