Hi. I was born, grew up and went to school in Santa Monica. It is for the reasons you bring up that I moved away 30 years ago (to New England). One con that I didn’t hear you mention was the fog and “June Gloom.” I always found that depressing. The fog and overcast skies make the city look dirty. Just adding my two cents.

30 years ago you could rent a studio for $300

In the 70s I lived north of Wilshire. On 3rd and Idaho, then on 4th st. Then on 18th. I lived on Lincon and 10th. These were all great places. Forget Santa Monica today. Rents are way too expensive now. Plus the homeless have ruined it. All the crazies go to SM. Avoid it at all costs.

I see some 1 bedroom/shared living room places for like $1600, and some alone 1 bedroom apartments for like $2500. Not too bad. Are those real prices or just bait prices that will increase after a year?

they are prob real prices but landlords are able to increase prices every 12 months.

Santa Monica turned into Compton, Willowbrook, Watts, South Central LA, South LA, Athens, West Adams, Jefferson Park, Mid-City Los Angeles, Pico-Union, Leimert Park, Hollywood, East Hollywood among other parts of City of Los Angeles which are also not going places to live or to work they're also unsafe areas

It's so sad what has happened to SM, especially in the past decade- elections do have consequences. But the weather in LA is about as spectacular as it gets (minus those hellish last two months of summer); it's very moderate. For some perspective, the dead of winter in LA is probably equivalent to a brisk fall day anywhere else in the country.

@TheBritishBlokeRealtor any place with no state income tax. Nevada and Arizona are on my bucket list. Actually love the Philippines. Maybe when I retire.
