As a Spaniard from Madrid, I "approve" this video, figures are quite accurate. Just wanted to add that with the 1500 net/month there's not much overhead for saving, for travelling, for a car repair etc. But if you stay in one place with that kind of money and don't have any vices you should do alright.
@spainspeaks
@spainspeaks 8 лет назад
Hi and thanks for the comment. I agree that 1500 is a bit tight, but it can be done, especially if you share a flat with a few people.

that;s how things are everywhere, sadly. :( biggest cities of any country are more expensive, polluted, and NOT so attractive for the locals. but they offer biggest employment opportunities as well as making it easier to deal with the country's administration, going to doctors, museums... or whatever else you might be interested in. it all comes down to what matters more for the person. personally i'm sick and tired of the city i'm in, but i'm thankful for my safety here and all the commodities i have - running hot water, minimarkets opened 24/7, convenient public transportation...

Hello guys, I work as a software engineer for a company in Romania, Bucharest and I really want to relocate to Barcelona at the same company, from what I can see on glassdoor, my salary there will be around 2500 euro. It will be enough for a decent life? (single person, maybe to rent a studio alone, after some months to buy a car and to have money for service, not so fancy lifestyle, home cooking, gym, metro/bike to work etc) What do you think? Thank you, guys!

This video does not make sense at all. The salary difference between regions in Spain is very wide. In the Basque Country a normal salary can be 1200 and the south 800 euros.... Same as food and everything

"If you can make that type of money in a smaller city, it´s fantastic" but you can´t, mate. We´re all milennials or mileuristas or whatever in smaller cities like Málaga (where I come from) or anywhere in Andalucía, Castilla, Extremadura or most of the regions here. But yes, you hit the nail with salaries in a nutshell.
@khalidcarrillo1132
@khalidcarrillo1132 6 лет назад
Damn, I find those salaries very low. That's what I was making here in the US being paid a pretty low hourly wage (around 10 an hour). So I guess that's why in Spain things are quite cheap, from what he makes it seem. Why is it the reason that it's hard to find a job paying 40.000 euro a year or more in salary?

@junglesbongles8592

$300/single bedroom/month. they built so much before last real estate crash theres about 5 million empty investment units in spain. so theres an abundance of empty rental floor space. but forget renting its stupid. houses are so cheap. u can get a new single bedroom apartment in a skyscaper with a pool by the sea under €25.000. houses go for cheap too. the problem is selling it unless u drop the price bcuz theres so much over supply even 9 years after the bubble burst in 2008. i dont live there but am planning buying a plot of land in the south.

@khalidcarrillo1132
@khalidcarrillo1132 6 лет назад
Wow that's extremely cheaper than the US, at least from Chicago. a "cheap" house here is under 200k and a condo/apartment can run around the same price, 100k or more. Rent here is also expensive, it's very hard to find rent for under 1000 a month, at least not in a dodgy area.

Hi. I envy you living in Spain. Wonderful country! My favorite city is Seville. Stunningly beautiful, relatively cheap and very friendly. From my experience Barcelona is about as pricey as Madrid. Possible line ball on that one. You're spot on about Oz. So expensive! Everyone complains about it here. Enjoy your time in the sol.

Hi Rona, Palma de Mallorca is a great place but keep in mind that a lot of the work there is seasonal (May - Oct) given the fact it is a popular tourist destination. Apart from that, it offers a high quality of life.

Hi Stuart, love your videos. I've been offered an EFL job in an academy in Salamanca, Castilla y León. Do you know much about the city? I imagine the cost of living would be lower than Madrid. I briefly taught English in Valencia after uni, and thought it was quite expensive i.e 4 euros for a pint of beer in the city centre pubs. As a British citizen who was staunchly pro remain, I am worried about the effects of Brexit on my right to reside and work here. I know nothing will change immediately as we are still EU members, but do you think the most likely outcome will be for British expats particularly EFL teachers in Spain in terms of having to obtain visas? I know Rajoy said we could lose our right to live and work in Spain long term , even though someone like myself can speak Spanish reasonably fluently (B2/C1) l and would be providing a vital skill to Spaniards. Thanks Gary.
@spainspeaks
@spainspeaks 8 лет назад
Hi and glad you like the videos. Salamanca is a fantastic city. You will love it there. Gets a bit cold in the middle of winter but plenty of nightlife to warm you up. It's got a big university vibe about it. The price you mentioned for a pint is pretty standard in the city centres/tourist areas. I imagine Salamanca is no different. In Madrid you can get a 'jarro' (500ml) for about €2.50, or less. Just look around. There's a place called 100 Montaditos that does cheap beer. I've got a video on these type of places coming up. As far as Brexit is concerned, I reckon your best option is to get your residency here ASAP and wait for everything to play out. Once you got it, it'll be hard to lose, and I'm sure the lawyers will work something out. There's a lot of Spaniards in the UK, and a lot of Brits here, so something will be done. Don't worry about Rajoy. Don't think he'll be around when all the Article 50 stuff takes place.

@spainspeaks
@spainspeaks 8 лет назад
Well, to give you an idea, €70 for your phone, TV and internet, €50+ for your gas, water and electricity, €20-50 for 'comunidad', public transport around €45, and your supermarket and leisure costs will depend on how much you eat and drink and how often you go out. Then, if you buy a flat you'll have an annual property tax (IBI), which is a local tax and varies from town hall to town hall. Hope that helps.
@t1nyt0m098
@t1nyt0m098 8 лет назад
+spainspeaks great, that helped a lot thanks. Just one more thing, would you recommend Valencia? I'll have enough money to buy a flat and live on for a year or two while I learn the language so I can get work. I'm traveling to Spain for a couple of weeks in August and the perfect place to me seems to be Valencia? Would there be any better places to live? Seeing as Madrid and Barcelona is too expensive. Thank you.
@spainspeaks
@spainspeaks 8 лет назад
HI, I haven't spent much time in Valencia, so I can't say. Are you looking from a weather/coast point of view? A friend of mine lived there for a while and couldn't wait to get out but that's only one opinion. If I were to move to the coast, I'd probably go north - Santander, Gijon, or to a place like Granada. It all depends on what you want to do. If you need a big city to improve your work chances, then Valencia could be an option. If you work online, then a smaller city would be the go.

Health and education is 'free', meaning that you don't pay to visit a doctor, but the contributions you make each month are quite high. If you lose you job you are compensated and you have an unemployment benefit for 2 years. If you get fired, you do get a redundancy package but I don't know the exact quantities. I think it is something like 33 days pay for each year worked with a max. of 2 years, but don't quote me on that.
