Julia and I visit the Rural Life Museum in Surrey, and find that England's historic countryside was a hive of activity. Our huge thanks to the staff of the Rural Life Museum for making it happen, and the many volunteers too, especially Tony Stent, who made it possible.

Last week, I met a Dorset farmer, Allen Chalk now in his mid ‘90s used to farm with horse and plough. He spoke at length farming for his dad then for himself from the ‘30s and ‘40s still using the traditional methods of old especially horse and plough. A privilege to have met him.

WOW! Brilliant editing, Richard, thank you! Wonderful acting from both of you, of course, but I don't think I did too bad either 😄. You've really shown the museum in all it's glory! I had a huge smile watching it and am totally thrilled by the result, as I know Ed and everyone there will be when I show them this morning. I'm back camping for a few days with Ed and his firemen today. It was a magical experience for me too, Julia and Richard, and one I won't forget. Perfect title, perfect everything, thank you. Looking forward to the next time already! 🥰😂👍

Hello Richard and Julia, At first, I have to say,( with my rural english), I have google how far away is St.Valentin from worthing. 1380 km and 13 h 37 min. This is a very long distance. And this is the thing I want to say: From this distance, I can feel the love between you both. It is so wonderful to see love grows and what it makes with us....or better with you. In your eyes, in your body language there is luck and enjoy. I am very happy for you both. This is what the world makes go round. The Video was, how ever, stunning and sooo interresting!!!! I cant wait till it is saturday, every week. Thank you very much for your work and Your effort to entertain your users, like me. I hope you could understand, what I wanted to say to you. May the universe have only good things in store for you both!!! From the heart, yours Michaela

What a lovely place to visit and a lovely video Richard and Julia Born in the early 60's I can remember when things were a bit "simpler" than they are today. Care and pride is something that is sadly lacking in this modern day and age, with the demise of the lovely old horse and the introduction of the tractor signalled the end of the old ways with their apparent innocence and romance. My school days weren't my happiest either! But at home with Mum and Dad and brothers was great and also exploring the fields and woods close to home. I'm lucky as I had a rural upbringing. I can remember pink paraffin and Esso blue, I remember going to the local garage at Watchfield (Smiths garage) to fetch a gallon of Esso blue for the heater at home. The same heater that I scolded my buttock on when I got out of the bath one cold winters day! My Mum had a mangal in the back garden and I caught my fingers in it! This brought back so many memories even the toilet in the Anderson shelter brought back a memory of my dear old Nan, she lived in an Almeshouse in Claypits lane Shrivenham, it was a small cottage but she could not manage the stairs and lived downstairs. Her toilet was a simple bucket with a seat and I remember walking from our home in Watchfield to Nans home and my mum digging a hole in the back garden to empty the contents of the toilet into. How things have changed even since the sixties! Talking of Sixty, I shall be 60 this year!

What a wonderful video! Not just Victorian but per-Victorian and early 1950s life in the country. As someone who grew up in rural America from 1950 to 1966 I don't miss the lack of indoor plumbing or the primitive black and white television with it's tiny screen that could only receive two channels. Nor do I miss the fact that after school programs were impossible to take part in. I do miss the peace and quiet and the smells of new cut hay and damp soil. And the sounds of tractors in the distant fields and birds everywhere, and occasionally a car or truck would pass by and we would all look to see who it was. It was a quiet time and my brother and three sisters and I grew very close and remain so to this day.

Julia and Richard, this is pure gold!! I was hooked every second throughout. Your commentary, the skits, conversation with the staff, was perfect. I will share this video with my family in London. Unfortunately, I cannot visit this lovely museum as I now live in America. I miss British culture, so wait for your videos eagerly. As a child, we had the clothes wringer you demonstrated in our garden, which had been left by the previous home owners. I played with it as a child. My neighbour had an air raid bunker in their garden and we had a coal shed outside. I am about your age Richard, and am Indian. I am fascinated by the old British culture and way of life. You and Julia are perfect together and I’m glad you’re happy! Watching from Oradell, New Jersey, USA

14:21 Lovely to see a Water Bodge. Gardeners of walled gardens used them to transport water around the garden. I remember when we had a village blacksmith back in Wales. Also remember when the stable block where he worked burnt down one night and you could see all the horses lined up in the street until they brought it under control. There was an entire community here in London who still lived in pre-fabs up until 8 years ago but sadly now the entire estate has been demolished and only one house has been kept as a museum. What a beautiful production, you must be exhausted with the amount of work that went into that. Wonderful showcase for the museum. In Wales there is St Fagan's Museum, along similar lines as this. My village barbers shop where I went for haircuts was taken to the museum but sadly costs mean they haven't rebuilt it yet, even 20 years later. Will be adding this Rural Life Museum to my list of places to visit. Wonderful.

An absolutely delightful episode. I fully appreciate a well executed history museum and the two of you looked like you were thoroughly enjoying it. Back in the 1990's, I worked as blacksmith at a history museum portraying a 1702 Spanish Mission in Florida. As the visitors stared into that waddle and daub forge with the charcoal all aglow, there were two questions asked the most: "Is that fire real?" and "do you make swords?" The fire was real and no, we did not make swords or horse shoes. Just nails, hinges tools and repairs. Mostly nails. Thousands of nails over a six year period.

Excellent video, very enjoyable. I listen to your Naked Englishman broadcast and your concerns regarding finding new content and I feel you are on the right track with what you are doing. I’m sure you will find more opportunities to show life in the old times. Keep up the good work.

What a privilege to video here (not far from the Tilford Video we did back in 2018). Nice that you get the time to film without the panic of getting things done quickly although there is never really enough time as we both know. Lovely Video.

I took my Mom, to the back to back houses in Birmingham, about twelve years ago. The rooms were tiny and the stairs steep, leading to the bedrooms. My Mom commented, that this house was larger and more luxurious, than the one her parents lived in, I thought she was joking, but she wasn’t. They had to go outside to the toilet and laundry, she was eight years old in 1931 and had to do the laundry. She had to light a fire under a large steel container and used a dolly to wash the clothes. We think we have it hard now, what a joke. Thanks for the video, it was wonderful.

Firstly i thought when i saw rural life title it might be just a narration of rural life...but Richard sir and julia mam have shown their best efforts to demonstrate in reality how the rural lives were.....Beautifull rural life... was our past beautiful or can we make our future more beautiful than our past through new technologies ? Big confusion in me but i m sure our past life was eco friendly.... but future ...?

Epic video Richard & Julia. The Rural Life Centre is just ‘round the corner’ from us. Haven’t had a proper look round it for a while. Last time we were there was for the Weyfest event a few years ago. Must return for a good look round sometime soon. Fond boyhood memories of the cricket pavilion when it was in its original location which was at my local (at that time) recreation ground in the Busbridge area of Godalming.

The blacksmith (back in the day) would probably have been supplied with local iron ore Opencast quarries were dotted all over the Weald supplying iron for local use and also for cannons on warships There are quite a few existing hammer ponds and furnace ponds where streams were dammed and water power was used to extract the ore in Surrey and Kent

What a great video.. informative and funny.. well done guys. My late gran in Glasgow used to still have the wringer for the washing..in fact she still used a lot of old equipment back in the 70s when I was growing up in Scotland. There were quite a few Anderson shelters in her street. Those old carts looked amazing. Really enjoyed the video...thank you
