Have you experienced cooler temperatures as you go up in elevation? Mountain living in the Philippines is an option and also has the advantage of cleaner air and water in most cases. Generally, there are no malls or hospitals in the mountains here so you will probably take a trip or 2 each month into the city for supplies. Brownouts and internet connections may be a challenge as well. Valencia, Negros, Philippines in the mountains above Dumaguete is becoming more popular with expats.

ITPark condos are a preference. IT Park is clean, everything you need is in walking distance, armed security guards are everywhere.

It really helps to have the newer Ayala mall there now also Thomas. Was there yesterday.

Hey Rod, good video. I’m down in Mindanao about 6km east of Mati city in the Provence. Kind of in a little valley. Breeze helps most of the time but days without the breeze is stifling. The mountains around us absorb most of the weekly rainfall. Most of mindanao mountain living is dangerous. Muslim and rebels live in the mountains. I built our house so my monthly expenses aren’t bad. The big difference, I had them put double sided insulation under the metal roof. Our electric averages 7000 a month. Water here is on a coop well so it’s usually less than 500. Mati does have a couple private own malls but small and Chinese owned. We go every 2 or 3 months to G-mall or S&R to stock up things we can’t find here. We are still making improvements here but my best guess for our normal budget is around 30,000 a month.

Thanks for all of that info Gene. I am just reading the book, "The Moro Wars". Interesting history of that southwest area of Mindanao and the various military leaders in charge over time and their approach to the issue.

Gadget Addict did a review on Starlink. Also Texas Filipino. You need it if you live in an out-of-the-way place with no internet or bad internet. Also useful if you're traveling to remote places or your area has been struck by a disaster. Of course, you'll need backup power like solar to power it.

a nice vlog of mountain life. being an older man, I'd prefer living closer to the city for many of its features. A good hospital is a must, walking distance to shopping and restaurants, easy access to transportation, and security are my most important needs. I love walking, and would be walking in most of the malls, parks, and possibly ocean roads by the piers. I'm an old sailor who loves the ocean breeze, the smell of the ocean, and the occasional dip. I love talking to people, so I think, being a friendly person, I'd probably fit in really well. I do like warm weather, but the occassional rainstorm is enjoyable. Never been in a typhon, and would definitely take shelter, but would like to witness them. I've seen water spouts in the Mediterranean Sea when I was in the Navy, and was amazed how mother nature plays. Brownouts are a concern for me, so living in a condo might be just what the doctor ordered.

You should fit in well here James. I have a "mariner" friend who comes over from Leyte occasionally and very interesting to hear his stories. Condo life has its advantages.

How much does Starlink cost in the Philippines? Metro Manila residents will have to pay a one-time hardware fee of P29,320 for a user terminal, while subscription is priced at P2,700 a month. It's a hefty sum for better Internet, which is why Starlink is also offering a one-month trial for interested customers.

That was a nice long ride back down Rod, I’m happy to see that Tops is back open again as it’s somewhere I plan to re visit soon, when I’m back in the city. I wanted to go back to Kawasan falls while down in Moalboal , but it’s still closed unfortunately. I really like the mountains for a ride or a visit, but I don’t think I could live there long term for various reasons.
@AmazingPhilippines1

Thanks Brian. I didn't know Kawasan was closed. I think I would get bored if I wasn't a few minutes from the city also.

Another interesting video Rod. I've developed some spinal problems that have prevented me from going out. I've made some progress and hope I can visit Tops with my partner soon. Taxi hire for both ways. We live in IT Park, although my partner has land in Boljoon I/we prefer the facilities of a city. Maybe build a holiday home there. John didn't appear to fasten his crash helmet. I'm an old biker and never rode without my bone dome well secured. Too risky, too much trust in a rider you don't know.
@AmazingPhilippines1
@AmazingPhilippines1 Год назад
Thanks Rod. Sorry to hear about your spinal issues. Have you considered a chiropractor? I have never needed one but I know of many who get good pain relief from them. Stephen Thwaites has an office behind Mango Square. IT PARK is very convenient. I was over their today helping a subscriber get moved into a unit in Avida.

@@AmazingPhilippines1 Not so much pain now Rod, but numbness in lower legs and feet. Disc problem I suppose. I had some physiotherapy at Chung Hua but seemed to make it worse. I'd be scared to see a chiropractor in case he made it worse. What do you think Rod?

Riding a carabao is one of my goals as well Rod. You need to make friends with it first. And what ever you do don't mention balbacua :) the dish is made out of carabao skin. Celebrated new year at Marco polo hotel with my wife (girlfriend at that time). She got tired of high heels, so she walked down hill barefoot.

Hmnn, up on the mountains, down to the deep blue sea, urban, rural...no escape from climate change, sir. But enjoy our environment and the local culture
@AmazingPhilippines1
@AmazingPhilippines1 Год назад
The latest science is that there has been not warming in the last 9 years thankfully. Many scientists are wondering if we are headed to another "mini-ice age" that devastated crops centuries ago Gemma. Earth has 12,000, 6000, 3000, and 1500 year climate cycles. We are at 12,000 years from the last ice age warming/cooling. The sun goes thru several "cycles" also with pole shifts included, 11 years. The climate on all of the planets is changing drastically in many cases ...even without humans.

Good overview Don't think Rod approves of living there. Landslides will be a issue. It's far enough to be a municipalty. Limited transportation. Malaybalay Bukidnon is cooler and has much nature. Baguio reopened airport and has SM malls and taxis. Naga Cebu is nice, but has bad landslides. Tops is more like a tourist spot for selfies. Would be a deal breaker with weak cell coverage.
@AmazingPhilippines1
@AmazingPhilippines1 Год назад
Thanks for your thoughts Hong Island. We saw a few very nice houses on the way up and more on nearby mountains, but they will cost you a lot to rent if you can find one and with the many of the discussed disadvantages. Living near the sea also has the storm surge risk.

Some of those habalhabal riders like to cut corners on the bends and have this idea that we are in a hurry so they go like hell. This, in the days before we purchased our own vehicle. As a motorcyclist of many years myself including Highway Traffic Enforcement they scared the crap out of me in the mountain roads of Sogod. LoL.

How is the Mosquito situation in the mountains? With the wild vegetation all around are you eaten alive constantly? Also if cell coverage is not good, getting a nice DSL/Cable/Fibre up there is out of question I suppose? Update: just arrived at the part where you talk about water, oh lord... scratch the mountain, really.
@AmazingPhilippines1
@AmazingPhilippines1 Год назад
Interestingly, I did not have any issues with flies or mosquitoes on the walk up. I very rarely have seen any in the areas I have lived in Cebu City as well. You will get more in the poor areas with more standing water. I suspect in the vegetation also Peter.

It was some walk 🚶‍♂️ rod how did you feel the next day? I prefer to live in a condo with 24 hours security it helps me sleep at night. We hear so many stories about guy's getting robbed or even harmed living in houses with no security. I also like being near shops restaurants and a mall health care etc. I like places like that for a few days or a week but not all the time for me. Thanks for sharing 👍

I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have any sore muscles the next day. I think a little better walking shoe would have helped as the bottoms of my feet hurt a bit the last part of the walk.
