Living in the shadow of the Berlin wall, 1981 

20 years after it was built, the Berlin Wall is now part of everyday life for West and East Berliners.
The footage from 1981 provides insights into life near the border and shows Berliners who, despite the Wall, do not allow themselves to be deprived of their sense of life.
Allotments settle near the west side of the Berlin Wall, a pub is being opened and citizens use the greenspaces far away from the busy streets to sunbath.
On the eastern side, however, barbed wire, barricades and shooting facilitys stop Eastberliners from using the area around the eastside of the Berlin Wall.
