Mutlaq Khader Salem Al-Juwain lives in a goat-hair tent in the desert in Jordan. His family has called Wadi Rum, a remote landscape known as the Valley of the Moon, home for centuries. It’s hot, water has to be trucked in, and Al-Juwain drives for miles to buy supplies. But the desert life is for him. He loves being surrounded by all of his animals, including camels, sheep and dogs. He enjoys pan roasting his own coffee over a fire every morning. And there’s nothing quite like nighttime when the moon glows from above.

I just realized the word sahara is Arabic for desert. So, when English speakers say the Sahara Desert, we sound like idiots.

@@drraziashahine8160 Not really, When people say Sahara desert in English they refer to the great Sahara which is located in north Africa, Sahara in Arabic means desert in general but the great desert is called Al Sahara al kobra

Nah tho, desert is not "Sahara". It's صحراء in Arabic, which is pronounced Sahra. You can go to 0:05 to 0:07 hear it, or just just use text-to-speech on google translate

One thing i find fascinating about this culture is that no matter if a man lives in the desert heading goats and camels or in a skyscraper driving lamborguinis and selling petrol, they dress the same way and could be indistinguishable to a foreigner. And as sand won't get you dirty, clothes are always impeccable white.

Well for us its basically normal attire, since it fits so well with our environment. Though we have different types for different occasions (its just the fabric that differs).

I'm struggling here finding a cold spot to go by since it's very hot outside and here is Mutlaq, someone who is living in a desert and doesn't even care about how hot it is there...they are awesome!

I spent a night in Wadi Rum 2 years ago. although it can be very hot during daytime (even in October, when I was there), but the nights can be cold. The sand was covered by frost the next morning. About he clothing: When we were there we were told to wear long trousers, as short trousers were associated with young children, and teenagers or adults wearing them had the reputation of being stupid or retarded. It also turned out that covering your skin with thin and loose clothes is more comfortable than letting the sun shine directly on your skin. Covering your head with something is necessary if you don't want a sunstroke, so the turban isn't a bad idea either.

Here’s some tips -go into a room with no windows if you can -lay on the ground or sit (heats raises not lowers) -strip som layers of clothes

@@ok-hd5bb actually that's the exact reason why he wore long sleeve. Your ski would burn to crisp without these garments. Also nost arab gowns like these are white in color to deflect more sunlight rather than to absorb the temperature.

If you get a chance in life to plan a trip to the desert - you have to do it. The experience will be precious and even life changing if you really slow it down and immerse yourself into silence and peacefulness of the desert.

@@Schuler789 It's quite simple actually; chose a country where there is a desert. Look up some local guides who will be able to take you/lead you there. Maybe even ask them to show you the authentic ways some people still live in most pristine places -- And let yourself be transformed. I personally experienced this on a private tour in Moroccan Sahara with berber local guides. That spaciousness and complete silence stays with you forever.

As a Jordanian, Wadi rum is one of the most stunning places in our country. I basically go there whenever I have free time. Relaxing there is out of this world and the stargazing is incredible since it's basically mostly untouched and remote so you can see the sky very clearly. There are many places to stay from 5-star luxurious martian bubble tents to ordinary Bedouin tents.

Really recommend you to visit Wadi Rum, it's incredible. I stayed at Mutlaq tents and he was a great host. We sleeped in the tents, it was cold because you don't have heat sources, but Mutlaq give us good food and a fantastic homemade tea. Greeting from Romania, Mutlaq!

I visited Wadi Rum last year and I can safely say it's one of the most beautiful interesting areas. The locals I met there were so nice, too. Hope to go back to Jordan someday again in the future.

When I visited Jordan 🇯🇴 spending time in Wadi Rum was the unexpected highlight of my trip... And I was thinking nothing could be better than Petra... but I was mesmerized by the beauty of the Wadi Rum desert... I didn’t feel like I’m in the moon, felt more like I was in Mars! It was out of this world
