@@TravelingwithKristin hi Kristin- thanks for this suggestion, just subscribed to your podcasts! I prefer watching videos to podcasts generally - I’m what the French call a flaneuse - it’s one of the things that’s helped me grow most (and beat any loneliness) from solo international travel:: watching/listening more and talking less. That said, videos are more work to produce so I get it..congrats. On your 100th podcast - wow!

Wow Kristen I just want to say that over the past week I have watched HOURS and HOURS of your videos and you provide such a valuable, well-communicated, honest perspective on travel and living abroad. And especially given that you help people with relocation as your job, the amount of valuable insight and information you give out for free is even more impressive. I have of course, checked out other RU-vidrs and other non-video sources of information, and your videos are consistently a different grade entirely -- it's obvious when somebody puts love and care into their work. This sit-down you do with Erick kind of epitomizes for me why I love your content. I sincerely appreciate your work and it has given me inspiration and helped break down many complex topics and choices. I hope you continue to chase your passions, whatever they are and wherever they take you, the world is better for the knowledge you have curated here.

Quite honestly this video here and the one that came before it are just the bomb. I mean top notch. You two covered a ton of subjects and it was so good. really makes ya think ! I've been thinking about leaving america, traveling the world for a darn long time. I know in the future I will do it. But yeah, it does take some careful planning and hard work to set it all in motion. So much to do to get there. Honestly I can see its going to take me about a year to sell everything off and orchestrate life in a certain way to make this happen. Who knows. perhaps one day I will get lucky enough to meet you in person and thank you in person for this great info. I think I am going to watch every video you ever made now. haha. One of the reasons I became interested in being a digital nomad was to escape the bullshit racism and atrocious treatment of poor and houseless people in my hometown, as well as the abusive wage labor I started doing in high school. I'd hate to contribute to an industry that keeps others in poverty and I want more than anything to leave everywhere I go better than how I found it. But at the same time, I want so badly to escape the constant tragedy I'm surrounded by and just live a comfortable, less stressful life. I'd love to hear more about traveling more mindfully rather than joining the gentrifiers in Bali and whatnot
@TravelingwithKristin
@TravelingwithKristin 3 года назад
That is one of the great challenges for travelers these days but I think that, although neither Erick nor I have a comprehensive solution to the complexities of this topic, we do see Eye 2 Eye and that there is a way for people to travel sustainably and mindfully, enriching their lives and also contributing back in a positive way to the places they visit. And sometimes even your presence there is enough. I remember drinking tea with locals in a mud house with no electricity on a tiny island off of the coast of Fiji and I think they were just happy to meet someone from another country and have a conversation and share a cup of tea

Yes! Great insights, Scott; glad you enjoyed. You definitely get to know someone well when you travel with them and I find that interactions are more pure and spontaneous when I meet new people while traveling. That’s why I like traveling alone sometimes so that I’m forced to meet new people rather than staying in a bubble with my travel partner, which can happen unintentionally

Hi Kristin, I have been quietly watching your channel and I can relate to you as a solo traveler myself, but this interview really resonated with me. I am currently in Porto Portugal but I am from Long Beach California. I have been traveling solo for over 5 years now and been to 29 Countries and some of my most meaningful friendships are with people I met abroad, my closest friendships are friends from Poland, France, Croatia, Italy, Vienna and Budapest. I learned more about myself and the limitations that was pushed upon me from my American Culture. Fortunately for me my Mom and Dad were travelers when I was a kid but they passed away before I became an adult, but they instilled in me to "think out of the box" or do what makes you happy as long as you are not harming anyone. My Experience as a Black American is different than Ericks, I was raised quite privileged and although I did have some racial experiences mine where pretty minor but I don't negate that America doesn't have a problem with racism, It's just that my travel experiences come from a different prospective. I do get faced with loneliness at times but mostly because I am single and I do want to date and share my experiences with a special person, but that only last for a short time, because living like a local as I do, I usually have friends to call or go have cup of coffee with to shake it off Lol. The key for me is to live amongst the locals and meet as many locals while learning the language. I'll be moving to France soon, small little French town near Normandie and I can't wait to explore another City in France! Thanks for your content, hope to share my experiences with you one day. :)

Hi Kristin, great interview.
 Good to hear Eric isn’t bothered so much by racism in Thailand as he was in Cleveland, but I doubt if racism is any less.
A point I would like to make, maybe I missed it or you don’t agree, is that Eric ( and you and me) are primarily identified as foreigner in Thailand and what’s more a Western foreigner ( not a poor labourer form Myanmar or Cambodia). That will carry most weight for how you are treated and your status in Thailand, while in your home-country your race and your class will be more determining. Class is even more equalising, because for Thai people it is much harder to see if a foreigner is working, or middle class or even super rich. One of the reasons, I think, why working-class Westerns feel a kind of freedom in Thailand compared to home.
@TravelingwithKristin
@TravelingwithKristin 3 года назад
Hi Melle, so glad you liked the interview. Yes, I would agree that foreigners from different countries experience different treatment. It’s certainly not fair, however. 🙁 But I think many westerners feel more free outside of their home countries.
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 3 года назад
I agree, socioeconomics/class carry far more weight around the world than race. Spot on in regards to Thailand. As I said, there are "levels" to racism. And you don't really feel them as much in a place where you have economic privilege.

Great video- I need to watch Part 1. My initial takeaway is that there's certain personalities that simply wouldn't fit well in a more traditional lifestyle that includes an intimate long term relationship, frequent interactions with friends (in physical close proximity), typical domestic activities (e.g., home projects, gardens, etc) and perhaps local community groups. Some brains thrive in environments of near-continuous exposure to new people, cultures, scenery, ideas and these people (I assume) become restless in situations where things become familiar. We live in a blessed time where it's increasing more possible to select a lifestyle that matches your personality and it's becoming more socially acceptable to live in an atypical manner. I have known many people who have tried traditional relationships or traditional careers, sometimes for decades only to realize they "just don't fit". I remember reading somewhere that less than 30% of the people using dating services actually have the capability to engage in a quality long term relationship, as one example. Bottom line, we need to know who we are and then choose a lifestyle that matches. Sounds easy, but for most of us it can take a long time.
@TravelingwithKristin
@TravelingwithKristin 3 года назад
Hear hear, Jeff! Well said. We are very fortunate to live in this time, but the unlimited ways to live life and people to meet can present a new set of challenges that I’m not sure any humans are fully equipped to deal with. All we can do is our best and keep re-evaluating and try to remain self aware. Easier said than done of course ;) Here is part 1 of the interview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JmGP1_Vn3cc.html

well written. and this is truly all I've been trying to get across for years and seems to be where I get the biggest pushback. people are diverse. and many aren't going to subscribe to what you or I see as "normal". and that should be fine. we have to allow people the freedom to live their lives the way they see fit as long as they aren't intentionally hurting anyone. there are a LOT of aspects that are normal in the states I find absolutely crazy.

Talk about unsustainable tourism...Hawaii is suffering terribly from the "Nomad" lifestyle influx right here in the good ole' USA (which is debatable based on history...Hawaii was screwed, honestly). Our state has been inundated with "new residents", driving the cost of housing through the roof, tripling the number of cars on our roads (which makes our usually pristine air, not so pristine), and the lack of interest in culture and "me, me, me" attitude is truly disappointing. I wish people would think about the impact that their footprint will have when they travel somewhere (in general), much less deciding to move there on a whim. This trend has caused an aggressive response between residents/locals and tourists right now. There has been an obvious uptick in confrontations between visitors and locals, as the locals are extremely tired of the negative impact on our quality of life. I urge people to, please, travel with a conscience and put yourself in the shoes of those who live there.

I found it interesting when you two spoke of being passionate about your work. I’m a bit older than you two but not by much. I work to live not live to work. That’s about as close to passionate about work as I get. I like my career and my colleagues but I don’t have a passion for it. Never thought about that need before really. I do what I have to do to provide for my family and I try to find enjoyment in everything I do. That’s it. I noticed people working in creative fields like photography, artists, etc need to be inspired to enjoy their vocation. Sounds like a double edged sword. You get to make a career out of something you love but are sad or maybe even get depressed if you lack inspiration. When all else fails take a step back, take a deep breath and be thankful for what have been able to do to support yourself and will probably be able to do again. Lacking inspiration to work is definitely a first world problem.
@TravelingwithKristin
@TravelingwithKristin 3 года назад
Hi Nino! Thanks for weighing in. This is a topic I’ve thought a lot about and I’ve also read a lot about it. I recommend the book, “so good they can’t ignore you” by Cal Newport that explains the distinctions between working to live and living to work and the passion fallacy. When it comes to breaking through blocks and lack of inspiration, The Artist’s Way is a good one. I’m also reading Mastery right now by Robert Greene that seems to explain a lot about this human condition of struggling with work and passion but I am always grateful that we live during a time where these are the challenges we face :)

It’s tough because as we were talking about, the tourism does bring money into these economies. I just hope that there can be more sustainable development and that the tourists that visit the countries learn from those cultures. If people are going to travel anyway, I would rather be vocal about these issues and bring some awareness to them. I still think that the world is better off when people travel and interact with people that look and think and live differently then they do. We can learn from each other

In the African American community it's a generational thing when it comes to being gay. People I would say about 35 & under are more accepting of gay people as a whole than people 45 & up as a whole however I don't think the excepting of different life styles is something that is attached to the African American community only. The religious aspects of the past is something that's embedded in the hearts & minds of Americans especially if their family tree stretch back to the 1800's rather they be African American, Caucasian, or Hispanic & so on however because people have more access to different cultures threw the internet the climate of what we accept in America is starting to shift.
