Danny, when discussing plants and trees like this, could you please do a close up of the bark and leaves and flowers and fruit. It would be very helpful. A lot of my research I have difficulty finding good identifying photos of the plants and trees.
@wmluna381
@wmluna381 2 года назад
Lately I've been taking photos of plants, leaves, trees & bark and scanning them through Google Lens. If you have a newer Android phone it shows up right in the Google search field next to the microphone. Or upload photos to your desktop and use it there. It's been about 60%-70% effective in helping to identify things. It helps if the plant, etc. is very distinctive looking.

The old folks tell me people used to use Black Gum to make toothbrushes out of. They would hammer the end of a stick, until it was a fine fibrous mass, and then trim it, and use that as a toothbrush.

Wow, I learned so much from you on this. My land is loaded with gum trees, popular, White oaks and some maples. Most of my pines I've had taken down near my house because they fall too easy plus get pine beetle disease. But I've been told that these gum trees are so hard they make railroad ties out of them. I live on Lookout and this mountain is full of water. Must be why I have so many. There's springs all in my creek. Thanks for teaching about the trees Danny.

Ray Valley I too moved from FL in 07. Just too darn crowded down there. Check out Northeast Alabama while your searching for a homestead. Very rural, small town. The taxes are so cheap! Last year I only paid $138 for my 2000 sq ft home with 10 acres. When I lived in FL, Hillsborough county I had to pay $2500 a year for 1/3 acre. Just a tip. Good luck on your search.

Danny I live in Alabama oh, we have a nuisance tree called a sweetgum, I hate them. They will take over your land, your pasture and the only thing I know they're good for logging of pup wood. Now on the other hand Black Gum is useful. I have Indian blood in me, my family used to use small limbs for toothbrushes. That was around 70 years ago. We also used to chew on Willows to get the aspirin out of it. They make great baskets. If people would look around in their yard especially around old places. They probably could find a lot of plants that the Indians and Pioneers used for medicine. We have so many plants around my house oh, they have been here for hundreds of years. Mullein plant, milkweed, wild onions, wild garlic,pusilen, and all kinds of different herbs. Thanks for sharing, it's amazing what God has right here for us. And all kinds of herbs

I just planted a Black Gum tree on my property and now I know what its uses and future entertainment will be. I think I will plant several more because of some wetter patches in a down hill field I have. I hop that they will do well where some of the white oaks I planted are not doing so hot with the dampness of the soil.

Australia is covered in redgum trees not sure about the blackgum variety though. The river redgum is notorious for dropping limbs so you just don't camp underneath them. Australian gums are usually Eucalyptus or related genera (none are native to North America). These are in the genus Nyssa, which is considered distantly related to dogwoods (Cornus), which is probably another genus only found in the northern hemisphere and not in Australia.

If you cut one of these down. Plan on having the logs around for a while. You will destroy yourself if you try to split them. They take forever to burn away. I have heard of tupelo honey. I also heard the wood is good for carving duck decoys. I have way too many on my land.

Deep South Homestead yep, I watched it again and see the leaves. I totally missed that. The sweet gums have the leaves that remind me of a Star shape. The black gum looks to have glossy leaves. I have trees here that look similar but the berries are round and they are ripe and falling now. I always thought they were black gum or sweet gum or wild cherry. I just discovered this when researching a tree I found on my property. I began looking for info because I'm working on an building project about 20 feet from this tree and I started getting rained on by all these little berries. Those suckers can hurt! Turns out I have a really nice Black Gum about 30" in diameter and I'd guess 70 or 80 feet tall. I really wanted to clear the scrubby little saplings and brush in that area and keep this tree as nice shade, but once I learned about the way these tree rot and die I looked again and realized a big bump near the upper 1/3 is a hole that had started to rot. I'm wondering about cutting it down before it gets worse and milling as much as possible to save the lumber.

Was the wetland tupelo you mentioned Nyssa aquatica or the (much shorter, and apparently found wild in a limited area, mostly in the Apalachicola River drainage) Nyssa ogeche (a.k.a "ogeche lime," because it produces a large, air-filled, very tart fruit a little like a giant cranberry), or are both good for corks (& I hear the buttress and root wood of at least one type of tupelo is pretty famous as a wood carving material)? The ogeche lime, incidentally, is the source of monofloral "tupelo honey," though I am not sure it is healthy given all the critiques of high fructose corn syrup (tupelo honey never crystallizes, supposedly because it's based on fructose rather than other sugars).

wow I know scripture says God planted the cedar and the oak--but I wonder if this tree has another name in the bible as it seems spiritual as it likes water and soo strong-just a thought?? God bless and love this videos.
@erikjohnson9223
@erikjohnson9223 3 года назад
The Bible was written primarily in Israel (& to a lesser extent in Babylonian captivity)--the Middle East. The genus Nyssa, to whick black gums belong, is North American. Baldcypress and mangroves also like water, and also aren't in the Bible. Dates and myrtle (Myrtus communis, the bush Hadassah [Esther] was named after) are two of the four species waved at Succoth and are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, as is pomegranate, which was the model for many Temple furnishings and some bells on the high priest's garments if I remember correctly. Those are quite xeric species. Frankinsense and myrrh are largely limited to the Yemeni desert. Being swampy doesn't make something spiritual, or not; it is just a habitat that some things prefer and others can't stand.
