Living RENT FREE in NYC - The Van Dwellings of New York City

In todays video we visit with Rob as he walks us through Van Alley in Brooklyn New York. The high rent prices in New York City have been forcing many to move into self converted DIY camper vans. There are many that come and go as they find alternative living spaces other than their van dwellings. This rent free living can also be difficult as the winter months come.

We cook meals at home and keep them warm with electric buffet warmers. I also sold hotdogs out of it. I run a 3500 watt generator and I also have an inverter. Why pay $1300.00, for a room in Brooklyn, and have to share kitchen and bathroom with strangers. And I too have a cheap chinese diesel heater, and they are great.

Vandwelling can be done here in NYC. There are 2 in my neighborhood far uptown, they are quiet, discreet, clean, no problems. There is parking, but you will have to move more often, sorry to see van alley going away. For my research so far, most people that seem to make van life work are retired and not usually full-time. If you are entrepreneurial or skilled professional, if you have passive income or inherited a decent chunk, you can make it. If you are wise and don't wear out your welcome, friends and family can give you a break occasionally. A great possibility for this lifestyle is pairing it with university study- for the cost of one class per semester you have access to a cafeteria, a gym, sometimes a pool, bathrooms, a library and employment opportunities, and with a parking permit, now you don't have to move the van as often. Another possibility with van life is the potential to make it on a part-time income.

@Erika-gm2tf
@Erika-gm2tf 2 года назад
@@Air2nyc Warehousing was an 80s/90s term that had to do with gentrifying. I have no idea if term is used anymore, but the activity remains: buying up entire apartment buildings in areas that are going to increase in value (which is pretty much every area now with population explosion becoming unavoidably obvious), or areas you are going to "force" to increase in value. The entrepreneur may be required to have a certain percentage of apartments occupied as they try to get out the remaining tenants. They put their friends or family in there as placeholders. It may be a legal necessity. I don't know either way. I know my cousin was not the best person. Then they repair and upgrade the buildings and apts and sell them as condos/coops/condops. I don't know the legalities because I was only one of the placeholders being invited to live rent free, as long as I was willing to move every year or so to a new apt in the hood. Many complain about gentrification and it would be a beautiful thing for everyone to have a safe home of their liking. I hope our world can eventually accommodate everyone in a humane way. There's a lot of work to be done in that direction.) The experience on the ground was this: the beautiful boned old brownstones my cousin was buying usually had multiple vacancies and many sketchy occupants. They were not being taken care of by the renters and had not been cared for by the former landlords. Each building was in very bad shape. One had been a bona fide crack house that needed to be cleaned up for everyone's benefit. One, that I lived in for over a year, had a number of heroin addicts and one grandma aged heroine dealer living there. Heroine addicts are generally safer to live around than crack heads because they're usually mellower. Obviously they can't be trusted when they're jonesing so you want to lock up your camels, but crack heads are usually a dramatic danger to anyone in their vicinity whether they're high or not. A couple times when I came home from work, I stepped over them passed out and drooling in the stairwell with rubber tied around an arm. Park Slope is now an extremely high end neighborhood. Good or bad, I was there for the first part of the transition.
