Living Simply in an Old House In the Japanese Countryside

Rupert decided to embrace living simply in an old house in the Japanese countryside. Having left the city for good, he cherishes the quiet joys of living simply and peacefully. He did DIY renovation using recycled materials and traditional techniques. The old farmhouse - a kominka - was in a terrible state when Rupert and his wife bought the property five years ago. But the couple saw the potential of the traditional farmhouse located in a quiet Japanese village in Southern Japan and decided to fix up the house. Over the course of five years, they have beautifully renovated the house - which cost them unbelievably little.
As with the previous episodes on Rupert's life (on growing rice, food and tea naturally), the house is a great metaphor for a life philosophy that's all about finding happiness in simplicity, discovering abundance in the everyday, and embracing the past.
The photos scattered throughout the video have all been taken by Rupert himself. Absolutely incredible stuff! He's worked as a professional photographer for many years and still does occasional assignments. You can follow him on instagram (@rupert.japan) or check out his website (photograph-r.com).

And here we are, in our offices. Watching Rupert on our high end MacBooks, running on cold electricity generated by massive power plants. I can hear in his voice the struggles he must have had in Singapore, the price to be alive which can be calculated. And still - has more peace and beauty in his heart than anyone I've met in these offices..

@geeker2866 11 месяцев назад
@@satoyama.rupert Nothing of a life? We have such funny perspectives of ourselves. I think a lot of us younger city folk feel swallowed up by consumerism and the idea of success/failure. You should smell a certain way, look a certain way, talk a certain way, and don't forget about how you express yourself on social media because everybody expects you to have one. Say the wrong thing and a mob comes after you with the rampant cancel culture. If you can't keep up then you're a "loser". You have escaped the heavy burden and watching eyes (besides this video of course) of the modern era. You have something many of us are too scared to try, but so desire. Those last words of "an open mind to losing everything" is very true, sadly most are too closed in. It's beautiful to see those who are living life the way it is intended - along side nature with care. I hope to one day follow in your steps, and I hope you're doing well! 💚
@goognamgoognw6637
@goognamgoognw6637 10 месяцев назад
@@geeker2866 good comment, and i'll add it takes decades of life experience (and beating) to wisen up and realize that how society wants you to live your life is not how you should live it, your life is yours and the earth isn't theirs either. You'll find that after you've exhausted the silly empty goals society falsely glamorizes as "success" you'll discover what really matters is not at all what they prioritize. It's much simpler, it's much more wholesome and humble. You have to accept and see that you're only a temporary traveller through life before you get the answers and the way to live your life correctly. That's why it's mostly people in the second half of their lives who find the way.

Your friend in the UK does not see that working to earn money in order to be able to buy food from the supermarket is depriving him of the sustenances as most food from the supermarket are devoid of nutrients. And most importantly, you are protected from the crazy events that are happening now in the world like the 15 minute city and the coming digital currency. I hope I can also go to such place.

I dont think the beams are bengara added, otherwise it would go matte when mixed with Kakishibu (we are using both in our rennovation for non-visual wood, with only Kakishibu for wood that can be seen, and Coat G for external wood). The previous occupant was a daiku, so I inherited a whole lot of old hand tools. Some of which I am actually using that cant be done by Makita battery tools :)

@BGP369
@BGP369 Год назад
@@alanrogs3990 Careful with that wording "the right immigrants". Immigrants come to do the KKK type jobs here in Japan. The only real walls preventing this are restrictive immigration laws and resistance from the local population. Neither of these will be changed by immigration. Low population replacement is occuring because of lack of support and lack of money going to prospective parents. Japan has done virtually nothing to make serious improvements in this area for natives or immigrants alike. The issues here are all self inflicted by poor governance, incompetence and corporate greed. I do not expect this to improve any time soon.
