I had the mk5 gti for 5 years and it's still the best car I've had. Black, 3 door, 18 monzas, upgraded with rainbow speakers and sub. Literally my perfect car and I still miss the smile it out on my face looking at it and driving it. Moved on to a scirocco diesel and it took a long time to get over the fun of my gti being lost. I then looked to the mk7 to reclaim my lost passion, and to be honest the mk7 gti lost the fun factor of the mk5 completely. That was in performance spec. I actually preferred my scirocco to that and kept it! I heard someone say it quite well, the mk7 is the girl you would marry, the mk5 is the girl you'd have a wild passionate affair with! Think it sums it up quite nicely. Hope the mk8 brings the fun driving feel back!
Always wanted a GTI, but insurance was the ultimate killer being young. Ended up with a standard 1.6 fsi golf for 2 years. And just recently bought an edition 30 that now has a stage one with some other bits and can honestly say, that I think I’ll stick with this for many many years. Ultimate hatch!
T Shah - 2.3k for the year. Extortionate if you ask me. Though being a petrol head I don’t really care, like the fuel consumption, it’s smiles per miles
See here at least cars with just liability insurance instead of full collision insurance is the same for any car.. so unless you are worried about your own driving or took a loan out for the car then basic liability is the way to go!
I had my mk5 GTI for 3 years and loved every day with it, I cant agree more, for the price this car is an absolute must, I made the 'upgrade' to mk5 R32 6 months ago and while I dont regret it, it is not a better car than the GTI
@@JackScarlett1 thanks! That's the plan, I was in the same boat as you, I didn't know what to get because I didn't want to give up what the mk5 golf had to offer, great vid as always 👍
I have to say, this is the first video of yours I’ve seen and when you first asked me to subscribe I refused. However, after after the quality of this video I decided to check out your others and am thoroughly impressed! You fit an impressive amount of detail into a nice length video with brilliant portrayal of the facts that will interest us (the viewers). I will definitely be subscribing!
I’ve had my mk5 Golf GTI stage 2 APR for 4 months now, love the car to bits! I literally couldn’t see my self with out her! Needs some things addressing similar to yours like new tyres, steering wheel re trim, DSG service but honestly couldn’t fault the car! It’s amazing! If I was to change my car, it would be for either an R-32 or an Edition 30 both all of which I’d restore! Awesome video my friend, honestly need to do more vids on your golf, the professionalism in your vids is mint! Keep it up 👍🏻
Im looking at a nice example of an mk5, a 2008, for $3800 American dollars.. hoping to get it for a few bucks less though thats already like $600 off the asking price.. *4 door version so its PERFECT for a single father of 2 children as well!!
Remap from Superchips using the Bluefin hardware works great. You can use the remap at will. When you decide not to use it (like when there's snow and ice) you can go back to standard tune. Then back to your remap at any time. You can do this as often as you like. Around 20% extra power and torque. No downside. Just make sure to use the high octane petrol. When the MKV was the current Golf, I believe they took care of the tuning for the GTI racing series in the UK, so they know their stuff!
That lighting, that framerate, that resolution... Crisp 'n clean. Very aesthetically pleasing. Love the professional cloth underneath the camera on the dashboard too ;). I also immediately spotted the air filter when the bonnet was up, maybe consider getting a painted rear bumper one day? Would be very very sexy. Anyway cheers to another video, and to the new equipment ofcourse.
2 weeks into my new mk5. I can feel the soul.. strange I know but if you love cars like a car guy you'll know. Biggest thing for me was getting away from diesel. Soul destroying.. good health bruv
Came across your channel shortly after getting my mk5 about 18 months ago. Love your concise and purposeful style, all your videos have a professional feel way above the standard 'RU-vid car vlogger'. Keep it up 👍
Go into your convenience setting to turn the two mirrored control off. It’s handy when you set your mirrors where you like them, then just operate them together. Also, with those convenience settings, you can customize which lights come on when you get in and out of the car, locks, and so on. Explore this thing, they put some hidden gems in it. A lot of people don’t realize that their steering wheel is adjustable and telescopic. Worth reading the manuals on these cars!
Surprised at that age the PCV or DV hasn’t needed changed. Unless a previous owner did it. I’d also change the cam follower in the HPFP if you have no record of it being changed.
Did you get r32? Weve had one ten years and im interested to hear what others think. We bought ours for 11k which was a lot for me. The good thing is its still worth that, maybe more! That might make it cheapest car weve had!
@@allosaurusfragilis7782 Yeah i bought the 2008 R32 in May 2019 with 79k on the clock .. payed around what you did ... Just did my DSG + Haldex Oil changed and had the resonator on the exhaust straight piped .. would like to know what you've run into being an owner for 10 years
I actually have been looking for a good gti youtuber since i fell in love with mine (midnight blue mk7 2dr) and youre channel seems to be it mate. Keep up the good work
Great video and agree with everyone said. We’ve got one that is my mrs’s daily, she drives to work, she transports our daughter in it, she goes shopping in it but when we go away in it I tend to drive and find it very nice indeed (not quite as exciting as my E46 M3 but far more practical). Ours is remapped, makes a big difference (just stage 1). Highly recommend that, had it a year the same as yourself and bar a major service when we bought it, and a little tarting up it hasn’t cost anything
Great video! By weird co-incidence of me watching your video there was an old TG on today & Clarkson was testing the GTI against a Megane & Astra VXR - he chose the GTI. I've had my Edition 30 Golf for 7 years - awesome car as standard, near 300bhp with a remap. Best car I've ever had & can't see myself selling it. I'd love a Mk7 Clubsport but the cost to change is ridiculous. Look after your GTI & I reckon it will either maintain the value or go up. Have now subscribed to you because of the Golf...
I was thinking about grabbing a gti for my first car to mod up. You've swayed me and I think I'm gonna do it now. Also for such a small channel you've got some great production quality, you have earned my sub. 👍😉
I'm an alfa romeo fan but enjoyed your video I have a 156 jtd 16v and a golf mk5 gtd 170hp to be honest the handling of the 156 is fantastic which golf feels like handling a boat at corners and alfa it is a well made car, to me to be honest the golf is just practical inside has a lot of space to put things like bottles and stuff but just that remains an ordinary car I had a golf mk4 diesel one I think it was better made than the golf mk5 the interior material and the noise isolation. Keep up the videos mate really good review.
I bought my mk5 GTI in march and before that i watched your videos, mine got remaped it goes really fast now so I would really recommend that. I'm also a Subscriber since March i guess :D
I've had my mk5 GTI 2 years now with 74k on the clock, 2nd owner and kept stock, been looking at mk7 GTI but just can't part from my mk5, never missed a beat.
The mirrors move independently on mine. I think it's an electrical fault when they move together. Electrical door mirror gremlins. Sometimes takes a few goes to get my mirrors to unfold open. My driver puddle light doesn't work either.
Your older videos with this little bug consolidated my decision to buy one. It has some problems of course (I made some noob videos about it too), it's a VAG, but man.. it's so fun to drive!
Thank you buddy, hope you're well. When I do get round to mods, I'll be calling you for advice 😂 And congrats btw - our video on your R32 just broke 100k views!
Looking for mod? Buy a can of satin black spray paint from Halfords and respray the bumpers and skirting. Take it back to the original black. Literally a £10 job and the trims as good as new.
The thing when the wing mirrors move at the same time can be coded out with VCDS my Golf used to do it but I've disabled it so I can move each mirror freely.
My 2009 2.5 Rabbit is a kick. I drive it 73 miles on country roads daily. It’s holds its own. Have a sway bar and Koni sports, with 285/70 r17 on the road. Getting tune soon. My next purchase may be a Gti, I just worry a little about reliability and longevity
GTi is the best daily imo. If you a non enthusiast get a Golf. I have a MK7 GTi. Best car I’ve owned. And I also own an M3. You need a tune. Go with COBB.
My mk4 does the mirror thing as well, and Im looking at getting a mk5 gti as my next car, and here in New Zealand, they go for about $10-15k NZD, which is about £5-7k.
Fine... You complained with analytical statistics on the fact that only 9% subscribe. I’m from Oregon, your voice is cool. I’m looking for a GTI and need an honest review and I just watched another one with an English man who obviously hated the car and just complained about all his opinions he has like “it will get stolen, I’ll probably crash it, it’s not that fast I don’t know why people say their fast, blah blah blah”. He just complained for 20 minutes haha. I need an honest review of someone who owns and actually DRIVES the car every day. I subscribed.. thanks. I am going to buy a new daily driver and I appreciate a well made, comfortable and quiet interior with adequate power. Seems like I may need to buy the 138k mkv GTI here I found.. its also silver and in great condition and they are asking 4500 dollars. I’m going to pitch 4000 dollars and 25% down (it’s a dealer) and see what happens from there. I haven’t driven or had the car inspected yet, would you suggest an inspection on the car if there no check engine lamp?
Sounds like you're onto a winner! People will always find something to complain about, I think it's an amazing car and one of the best for the money. I've also driven remapped ones and can confirm it isn't hard to make them quote a lot faster. The more thoroughly you can inspect a car before buying the better - the big thing to check on these particular cars is if/when the timing belt was changed. Needs doing every 70K so the one you're looking at is prob due a replacement - that's around £350 on the UK. Happy shopping!
I am subscriber and I stil feel you have all the positive side of reviewing cars like Jeremy Clarkson.... Top Gear, this guy can save your dying series...
@@JackScarlett1 I mean you have the forged brand ones which are like 0ne hundred plus bucks and then you have the eBay one that does the same exact thing for like 40 to 50 bucks no particular brand as long as it's a short shifter for the MK5 model.
my dads gti is really close to 240k, me and him are guessing it will at least make it far beyond 300k. those things hold up well, only the interior falling apart
my hot hatch is a bmw 123d yes its a diesel but stock quicker than the gti, its got 204 bhp nad 400nm of torque I do lots of miles that's why I needed a diesel and the 123d gives me best of both worlds 42 mpg and lots of fun
Compare the median price of mk5 gti's to Clio 172/182/197's, mazda 3 mps, Focus or fiesta ST's, astra vxr's, Type R's, etc. Similar cars that match or beat the performance with a much much lower price on average. But of all them choices, I'd take my mk5 gti back in a heartbeat. A car your grandmother would love to sit in, can't say the same for most hot hatches for around the same budget :P
I don't disagree. If you're prepared to make a few compromises in favour of performance, you're probably better off in a RS Clio or Focus ST. My point is that the GTI is the best car overall
I am subscribed because of this video thank you for doing the golf justice I agreed with everything you said mine is stage 1 remap with a few mods and I can drive it tidy and I get thrill form it now definitely worth doing
5:45 Here’s a little tip / solution for you... “Synchronised” mirror adjustments is a feature you can turn on and off. Your dealer can do it for you, or you can get an OBDeleven device and do it yourself. (Edit: Or if you have the right screen option you can do it in the menus apparently ?) Check out the OBDeleven website and look under supported vehicles, golf gti, apps, synchronized mirror adjustment on/off. 👍👍😁
Feel the same! My 182 may not be the newest car around but I cant sell it. I have had the chance to but nothing compares to it really. The only 2 cars i would even consider selling for is the mk5 Gti and ep3 type R. Love your channel btw!
best budget if you are an oil prince and if you own volkswagen fabric. Dont get me wrong, i love my mk5 gti but either WORST budget hot hatch. Cause it will cost you overyear more than a supercar. In my familly there are porsche drivers and thay don`t spend a half of what i do in a year for that great tfsi
I'll bet mate, the Focus was on my shortlist. Sure you must be loving that engine though. If you're anywhere near the south of England I'd love to meet you and shoot the ST!
91% of you are taking the piss had me laughing 😀😃 , if you can get your hands on a skoda octavia vrs of around the same era (2006) as your golf please do a review on it, i have one and honestly think it’s one of the most underrated hot hatches (saloon) there is, half leather seats , the gti engine , the same chassis , and the interior is literally vw all over if i covered the badges i’d be convinced i’m in a golf because it basically is , but check this massive boot space , cheaper insurance than the golf and i bought mine 2006 on 105000 miles for £1850 , what more could you want for £1850 and handling too is shockingly good , for a saloon i’d expect some roll and it to be a pudding but nope it handles close to its cousin the gti , iv never seen a car channel give this car the spot light i think it deserves
You have an issue in the left door harness if it moves both. Trust me I just had the same problem and had the door harness repaired and now it works fine.
You are like a one man top gear with a much more modern feel. I would love to see you review Audi's like the b5 s4 and bmws like the 135i since its quite similar to a gti. Love your videos
Ive rented a couple of citreons while on holiday and they were surprisingly good. Definitely come a long way. They felt solid and well made. But like you, i still wouldnt own one, not least because they quickly lose most of their value. A second car or cheap runaround maybe.
i have seriously been having a mk 5 gti itch that i must scratch soon lol seeing as u can get a decent one for 3k now i think it is a bargain car and very easily tuned aswell..
New sub. And hey I think you need to drive a 205gti 1.9 iv had golfs gti’s vr6 and my 205gti was more fun to drive by far. I was all way fixing the bloody thing like. But that made it a mans car. Stick an mi16 in them even better
I'm a *JDM* boy at heart 💖 but these Vag units are really catching my eye. They are the perfect all rounder like you said. I've heard the Lancer (Evo 10 shape) shares Volkswagen's diesel 2.0 TDI 140 lump, could anyone confirm that?
Haha was 17 when I got a regular golf because of insurance but now 3 nearly 4 years on I'm like ...hmmm gti or tsi but jesus the fuel is just gone in no time at all even if I drive nicely
I have a mk5 golf the original stereo is ugly had to change that. The switches get really worn and look ugly changed that for the mk5 style looking ones off Ebay which are really cheap and look great. The seats start to wear on the bolsters. The dash mileage starts to fade. The front arches get rusty had to change those. The diverter valve goes changed that for the upgraded one which has a metal piston. Had too clean the carbon buildup on the valves which was long. Can followers, bushes I could go on and on lol. When getting an old mk5 golf gti be prepared to do some work onit
Jack Campbell beware of the timing chain and tensioners on the mk6. The edition 35 is fine as it’s the same engine as the mk5, but the standard mk6 gti uses an early variant of the EA888 and can be problematic.
I get what you say about it not being exciting, I have an octavia vrs mk2 with the mk6 gti tsi engine, I drive a Kia ceed now but today i start the old beast up, Put mu foot down but it just felt soo numb, No excitement, Nothing
Hey what's the problem with heated leather seats? I wouldn't want to be friends with a guy with a interior like a tartan kilt , especially this time of year with no pants on ha ha And yeah remapping 💯 you'll get the oh gosh back !
