The Nissan Leaf is now the cheapest NEW pure electric car you can buy, and it also looks so much more normal and appealing. We spent a week with an SL Plus Leaf which brings the nicest features, more power and range (not the highest range, that's the S Plus at 226 miles), and some nice new modern technology. We checked out charging times, how manageable was the range anxiety, took a weekend trip to downtown Chicago and more! See what it is like to live with a Nissan Leaf in this vlog!

The leaf is great. Simple, does it’s job. Nice but not fancy. Why is the market headed in this luxury/Tesla way? I’d rather have low cost and maximum utility.

Not sure I'd call Tesla luxury, especially the model 3. X and S yes but they are in a different league

If I was to guess, I would think it would be range and the tesla super charger. That is why I would choose tesla over the leaf.

It is a great car for 200 miles round trip to anywhere from home and recharge at home (or long trips while staying at hotels providing L2 chargers ). I am enjoying my SL Plus. Avoid DC chargers as much as possible for better battery life.

With the price increases this year and last year, I can no longer afford a tesla. So now the leaf is an option, but I wonder if battery degradation is still an issue in the newer leaf.

We just sold our 2019 Tesla Model 3.Our 2015 Leaf has better build quality. People think you are rich if you own a Tesla(If you want people to think that even coworkers then go ahead,We found it annoying) Kids will want to street race you 100% illegal and annoying 🙄 We had a minor fender bender,Slid on ice hitting a Ford F-150 just a scratch on the truck but $17k in front end damage to the Tesla insurance payed(You have to go to a Tesla approved body shop 💰💰💰) Took 3 months to fix(Waiting for parts🙄) Should have bought a Leaf+ instead.

@@gabrieltaylor5501 I can tell you that I have 41k miles on my 2018 Nissan Leaf and still show full bars on the battery health. If I check the SOH (state of health) I still show 96% health on my battery pack. I think the 1st generation Leaf had more issues with its battery health but the 2nd generation, in my opinion is much better. I primarily charge at home with my level 2 charger (ok, its really an EVSE) but I used to use public rapid charging a lot during the first 2 years of ownership, mainly as the first 2 years of rapid were paid for by Nissan. that much use of rapid charging is not supposed to be good for the longevity of the battery pack but I have not noticed any issues and still show full capacity at 41k miles driven.
@mostafa685
@mostafa685 2 года назад
@@gabrieltaylor5501 the degradation isn’t as bad as the first few year models 11-13 were the most issues. The second generation is a lot better. A tip for charging is not to keep it on 6.6 kWh and have it set to 3.* kWh, smoother charging with less heating up. This is from a Nissan technician

@@joshchelvolski1033 Hi Josh, that will definitely not happen. Like most cars (ICE and EV), if anything draws power from the 12v battery while the car is powered off, it will of course begin to drain. I have left my 2018 Leaf at the airport parking for 3 weeks and had no problem powering the car up when I returned. When the Leaf is powered up, the main battery pack is used to charge the 12v battery, just like how an ICE car charges its 12v battery via an alternator. I have drained my 12v battery one time but after a jump start to power up the electronics (and to access the main battery pack) I then found I had left an interior light on, which over a weekend completely flattened the 12v :( This is the Achilles heal of EV's (even Teslas as I understand it). They all rely on power in the 12v battery to start up the system, before it can access and use the main battery pack. I carry a USB jump start pack (which I have to remember to charge periodically!) to use as an emergency jump if ever needed. Hard to say if the 12v battery is being topped up while charging the main battery pack. I think it only charges when the car is powered up and overnight charging does not need the system powered up.

I never wanted a Leaf until the last two years. Yes the earlier models looked very weird, hideous. The front lights reminded of a beetle (the bug not the VW lol) with large bulging eyes. Since 2018 it looks so much better even if it does look like an electric Sentra. If it's affordable and has sufficient range that is well enough although I wish they'd update the interior as it looks the same for a number of years. Buying it new you have a good warranty for it without having to pay extra --- all those details I wonder about. So I'll prolly consider the Leaf since Hyundai dealers are over pricing the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. I'm hoping Nissan is more reasonable.

Hello I love to make a comment about your video, First off B mode is aggressive regen and braking I use it all the time especially on road trips. I have a 2019 leaf and I love it. I've been all over the place in my small tiny battery and can't stop won't stop! I've been to Yellowstone np (my first longer trip, 1,000+mi) from Colorado, Grand Canyon and Zion ! (2,053mi)! Planning a trip is harder now in 2022 with not knowing what CHADeMo stations are going to work when I get there, x amount of time gone by, if I plan in January how will I know in June or July🤭🤔 If it's going to work !? I've showed my car several times in National Drive Electric Week and Drive Electric Earth Day events. I hope more people consider ev ownership than gas, gas is going to be more expensive as time goes on! I've test drove the Mac e, and polestar2. As far as music goes, local channels are ok, but I use RU-vid red and I can jam out to just about any song anywhere as long as I have good cell service. 🤣 Again, thanks for making this video!😍🚗💜👋🏻🔌!

Cool 😎 You said "my small tiny battery" so does that mean you have the smaller 40kWh battery? And you went on a 2053-mile trip with a 40kWh battery? That must have taken some perseverance!

Luckily i got the leaf some time ago. The fuel prices are literally exploding here (over 2€/L). So it's good if you can drive for €2 instead of €15/100km. and "by the way" it's better for the environment 👍 I can't imagine gas prices going down again. So... it was the best decision.
@anthonyc8499
@anthonyc8499 2 года назад
Base price is like $28k for the 150 mile version before the $7500 tax credit. With state and utility incentives, it gets really cheap to own and operate as a town runabout. It'd still probably be better to just get a Versa though for less money and nicer tech since the Leaf is basically just a 2010 car with some makeup.
@landrewmackinnon4888
@landrewmackinnon4888 2 года назад
Buy a used leaf then. Old tech on an old car. Or, count the gas savings against the versa.

I bought a used leaf a few days ago. It will be used 2/3 of the time. ICE the rest of the time. The gas savings pay for the leaf and save me wear and rear on the ICE car.

@jimgassor8473

This is subjective to where you are in the world as the Leaf is sold all over the world. In the US you can charge via a standard 110v outlet but could take 15-16 hours to fully recharge assuming it was almost out of juice. Typically you would see around 4 miles of range per hour. If you had a 220v supply you could be getting around 22 miles per hour and take around 6-7 hours to fully recharge if fully depleted. The fastest you can typically recharge with a rapid charger (upto 50khW) takes about 40 minutes. I think the newer model (still called a 2nd Gen) can charge faster but you would be limited to the speed of the rapid charger. Superchargers are more of a Tesla/VW/Audi/Ford thing :)

Great review. As an owner of a 2021 S Plus. The miles gage is called Guess oh meter. Which is never on part in any EV. But changes depending on how you drive. Also, in cold weather, you're going to lose a lot of range.

@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 2 года назад
Most EV owners charge at home - usually while they sleep. You won't need your car while you sleep. You *have* to drive to a gas station to fill up, then pay some inflated price. The cost of running an EV is around a quarter (or less) than the cost of fuelling an ICE car. Servicing costs way less too, with only around 20 moving parts rather than hundreds of them. No engine, no oil changes, no clutch, no gearbox, no engine cooling system, no timing or fan belts, no exhaust system etc...... It takes me 12 seconds to charge my EV. Six seconds to plug it in when I go to bed, and a further six seconds to unplug it in the morning when I get up. Then I'm good for almost 300 miles. I only need do this every 8 to 9 days. In fact I can plug the car in well before I go to bed, as the timer in the car begins and ends the charge at the time I've set it - on cheaper night rate of course - which here in the UK is around a quarter of the normal daytime rate. And even after the recent 50% increases in the cost of overnight charging, it still only costs me around 2.5p per mile. A diesel car covering 50 mpg might typically cost around 15p per mile or more, at present UK fuel prices.
