Performance cars.. if you're careful about it, can cost a lot less than you think. In this video, I go through all the maintenance costs associated with an Audi RS3 and the possible things that can go wrong.
In addition to the videos on power and the insane exhaust note, I have now done a video speaking about the practicality, drivability and the fuel economy. Try guess in the comments what mpg you think this RS3 could achieve! I briefly compare the maintenance cost of cars that cost approx £25k (F10 M5 and BMW M4). Let me know your thoughts below 🙂

This is why I always check the service history of a car, and all the tyres, brakes etc before I buy. The only real risk with an RS3 is something going wrong (like the trans box or rear diff), but maintenance wise, as long as you allow for it, its not so bad. You can even do the oil changes yourself if you want to, its easy. If the car you want has worn tyres and brakes, no history of haldex or gearbox oil changes, then you can add all that up and negotiate the price down. Unfortunately there are people who will hate that and won't ever budge on price, so you have to be patient and find the right deal. The worst thing is if you just buy it and don't think about these things, you can't go back and change your mind afterwards.

Just bought my 18' RS3 50k mi Saloon here stateside. Owned a 91' M5 for 17 years until it was crushed in a winter storage bldg collapse😢 Now 7 yrs later I'm a bit bored and looking forward to going down the German sports car rabbit-hole again! Love getting into all the ins n outs of performance and maintainance. My career was in Aerospace aircraft maintenance and technical publications, so wrangling up technical insights and information is what I love! Luckily I was able to research the (Ontario CAD) car I bought by contacting Audi here stateside an found the one owner had it in for every sched maint visit required by Audi up thru 48k. Also had this local dealer do a presale insp for $175. Luckily all that was found deficient was the cabin air filter ❤ Ps. Spent $12k on maint of the M5 over those 17 years. $2300 was for a Dinan Stg 2 lowering susp kit, eliminating the hyd rear struts with Bilsteins and factory Boge for front.

I have an S3 for 4 years and a lot of comments you make are common. I have saved a heap of cash by doing all oil changes (engine, haldex, gearbox), spark plugs, air filter, brake pads etc myself. Changing oil is extremely simple and the money you save means you can ensure you get the best quality oils. I save the major services for a decent mechanic.

is it hard to do those things on your own without experience? thinking about getting a 2015 rs3 and i dont want to spend a fortune on maintenance. i know my way around cars, just havent really been working on them.

@@TimelessKosmosits literally just gettting the car up on stands, unscrewing a plug, letting the oil drain into a container, changing the filter (it just unscrews), then putting the plug back and filling it up.

Before I bought my Rs3 I found this channel super helpful in terms of working out my running costs. Just to add to what I’ve learnt now from having one. 33mpg is easily achievable motorway driving going between 70-80. Major service and S tronic service from Audi £520 all in. Disk and pads on the front £1200 direct from Audi. Rear disks and pads £424 again, from Audi. All subject to where you chose to get the work done but that’s what I paid from Audi.

really appreciate this video G, looking at em right now, around £20k gets you a 2016 or maybe even 2017, but it was all of this I was worried about. As I say, really appreciate the knowledge on this.

Good video, good information for someone considering buying one of these. One thing I always notice and look for with cars is steering wheel quality, this RS3 steering wheel looks immaculate!

Crazy how expensive some items can get where you live, in Germany many things are alot cheaper, I could get brakes and pads for the front for around 400€ from brembo

@@KrazzyKam About 70€. I personally dont have an RS3 but a friend has one. I drive an A4 and I do everything on my own, I just did a full service with brake fluid, brakes front and back, oil and filter, airfilter + cabin filter and diesel fuel filter for 320€. But just an oil change is about 50 to 80€, depending on which oil you buy. I always get Mannol 5W30 and that is really cheap but has all the required specifications

It cost about £80 for 8L of castrol 5w30 over here in the Uk then about £25 to get someone to change your oil 😅

When I drive strictly in comfort and easily, I’ve averaged about 31mpg. Dynamic? A crispy 14mpg lol.

Are these US MPGs or UK MPGs? For US it's ok but for UK that's bad.

Nope I’ve gone 235/35/19 all around. My alloys are staggered from setup but due to the wider nature of Michelin tyres you need the square setup

I’m planning to get the 2022 audi rs3. It ditches the haldex system for the torque vectoring system. Does that mean thats 1 less maintenance part to worry about?

well i had pre facelift rs3 my transfer box went luckily i bought audi extended warranty which cost £900.00 a year which isnt that bad compare to what you saying have 5k to 6k just if anything can get wrong with it . they changed it under warranty didnt even paid a single penny . my car was modified. thanks

Ohh must have been because yours was a chip not a tune on the ecu. They found out mine was tuned as soon as it went in 😬

Aftermarket replacement cheaper and more reliable maybe? I think the golf r mk7.5 was a throw away part anyway there's an American VAG specialty mechanic channel and they even offer some upgraded parts that were plastic on some vag cars in aluminum and shit instead water pump that fails might be one of them I think but I feel like something as basic as a sump wouldn't be a wallet breaker and might be better after market options for something like that obviously somethings you'd never go after market but the sump was plastic for a while too but was interchangeable with and older metal one cos why would you want plastic on that part for goodness sake 😂 I'd probably try get a metal skid plate from a vw all track as well cos again stuff plastic lol. Anyway I will finish the video but yeah thanks good to know.

You can get them pre face lift around that price. But they’ve shot up rn in price like most cars as the market is sky rocketed for 2nd hand cars

I found that the PFL was cheaper than the FL. Insurance varies for everyone so there would be no point in me telling you how much I paid. Best thing to do is run some quotes for yourself on comparison websites on various cars and go from there 👍🏽

So the transfer box is located towards the front of the car so you’ll hear whining when you let go off accelerator and let the car slow down on it’s own. Majority of them fail at approx 40k miles and there’s no real preventative for it too.

You won’t regret it mate. Check that all services are up to date - incl the spark plugs and coil packs have been changed to the newest revision as they’re prone to fail at stage 1. Check for excessive wear on the inner tyre as they’ll cost you a lot. Test drive the car at a range of speeds as if there’s something wrong I’m sure you’ll hear/feel it or just pay a known specialist to check it over 👍🏽
