Dear friends, Dave said it was boring. What most of you are missing is that he's O.K. with that. He understands that there is a reason he's left with nothing but time to occupy. Meditation is the only thing he's got to try and occupy that time with. You will resist, but eventually you will do the only thing left to do. Sit down and shut up. And he describes what follows as beneficial. Eventually, his mind starts to clear and that's when progress happens. As a former monk ordained in Thailand (5 years), I can tell you: IT IS BORING. It's supposed to be. If there were a million external things to distract and entertain you, the purpose would be defeated. You're left with 2 choices: Leave and tell others you went to a monastery to practice focusing but it sucked because it wasn't a carnival of distractions for you (wtf?!), or surrender. Upon surrender to the program, you will discover that there are a million other things that are INTERNAL that will be there to distract you anyways. With only you to challenge yourself, the exploration begins. At the end of the 10 days, you've developed a bit of an understanding that there really is something to this practice. And better yet, in your daily life you will realize that you have a different awareness. Things your brain didn't realize it was learning during meditation manifest in the form of the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path and like a lotus, petal by petal revealing itself, progress progresses. Each time another petal opens you'll think back to how being BORED got you to that point. And you'll remember: NO MUD, NO LOTUS!

He said it's boring. That only proves to me he doesn't know what it's all about. Buddhist monks meditate to be one with the universe, travel deep within, but also expand the mind to see different parts of reality and spiritual plane. If he thought people meditating is only trying to "blank" their heads, he's mistaken. There are countless different exercises to perform to gain control of the thought process and become a master visualizer. If he knew anything about meditation and were any good at it, he'd know that he could summon lots of different alters of Buddha. Being good at meditation and connecting spiritually also means being proficient at visualisation. If he gained a few levels of consciousness and understood what a monumental honour it was to spend 10 days there, he wouldn't find it "boring". If all he wanted was to "chill out" and detach himself from the fake modern life for a little while, he did it for all the wrong reasons.

@assmatronix
@assmatronix 8 лет назад
+Wessel van den Broek I'm perfectly aware he probably was a curious guy just wanting to test his limits. But he probably wasn't just some random guy stumbling into a monastery. This was probably planned ahead in time, which leads me to think that he didn't take this seriously at all. I don't really care at all, I'm just slightly irritated of the end result, which is an insult to the dedication of Buddhist monks and their way of life. RU-vid comment sections are mostly kindergarten, I post a lot of shit as well, but every now and then it should be allowed to get serious...

You don't actually have to go to a temple to do this.. Just go camping in a real quiet place and adopt the same routine.. (you do need to find a real quiet place and not a big camping place.) Alternatively maybe you can stay in the backjard at family or friends in the countryside (if you don't already live there) and explain what you're going to do, or even do one of those house exchange/rentals like airbnb and find a real quiet place. Also, clearing your mind can be trained and you can do it whenever you want. But it's slightly more difficult than when you're in this meditation routine. It takes concentration and actively throwing/releasing the thoughts out of your mind one by one. You are addressing each thought mentally and accepting their presence before you release them - the thoughts often return if you don't accept/acknowledge their presence. Sometimes you need to dig thoughts and impressions from this day or even week up and bring them to the surface. You do this, acknowledging and releasing each thought until there's nothing but the thought of releasing those thoughts from your mind and the thought of keeping them out. At that point you need to release that thought and the very effort of keeping thoughts out of your mind. It's very important to stay concentrated at this point, but not forcibly and not at something specific, not even at being concentrated (because those would be thoughts). This point is about acceptance, calm and peace. Don't try to hold on to the moment: let it flow over you, accept that the thoughts will return but they don't matter anymore so you can just let them flow over/through your head instead of into your head. I imagine this works different for everybody but this is basically how it works for me.. It'll take some practise and patience to find out what works for you.. I never did a ten day routine like this but it must be amazing because it will be easier and easier to reach that point of emptiness.

Besides learning how to clear up your head, can you tell us what else you have learned from being there for 10 days? Would you do it again and why? And what are some things you see differently now coming back into "reality?" Thanks!

I'm thai and i had meditation course like this clipe before. (But my routine is not fix like that i can talk can read in freetime) I am in that class for 3 month in temple and how long you practice is how fast you be in "clear state" you can clear your mind faster and faster everyday The good thing after course is 1.i can sleep faster i mean when i want to sleep i can clear my mind and sleep like when you very tried and sleep 2. i need less time to sleep i can sleep for 4 hour and be fresh when wake up 3. i can eazily ignore a thing(sometime it is bad) like when i read a book i cant hear anything when 10 secound pass or when i intend to listen someone i cant hear anything else i still do meditation when i need to fresh in next day like when final tast come it help me a lot sorry for my bad english i

I am glad you got something from the meditation retreat even though you put it as "boring". Before joing this retreat, you'd better find some information about its objectives, outcomes and relevant activities. This retreat usually last for 10 - 14 days and is arranged by many monasteries or meditation centrs in order to clean up your mind and body with the set of mindful meditation. All genders, including LGBT, are welcome. You do not have to change your religion or beliefs in order to participate in the retreat. Practice makes perfect....

Hmm. I'm autistic and my mind is either on full blast or at zero (or close to it). I don't have a choice in this, either. If I'm interested in a topic or activity It's full blast. If there's no interest I am at zero. If in a day I have nothing to be excited about I am near thoughtless all day. Somehow I don't think this counts as meditation.

I have Asperger's Syndrome and clearing my mind is definitely possible. I've done it quite a few times and it's a wonderful relaxed and lightheaded feeling, especially since my head is also always full. Here's how it works for me (find a quiet place/room without much distraction): It takes concentration and actively throwing/releasing the thoughts out of your mind one by one. You are addressing each thought mentally and accepting their presence before you release them - the thoughts often return if you don't accept/acknowledge their presence or if you try to fight their presence. @LittleLionRawr 8 лет назад
Neceros -What? Wasn't it before? When was it considered an ailment? What does that even mean?- Never mind I've read up on it. It's strange stuff but fortunately doesn't directly affect me. These kind of disorders/challenges are like a spectrum anyway. I figured that out long before they changed it.

@DeathBringr07
@DeathBringr07 7 лет назад
Neceros Ingest magic mushrooms it's considerably better anyway (3 hour experience) immediately lifts mood for upto 8 weeks in clinical trailed subjects (and me lol). I'm of the autistic spectrum too, and in the attempt of giving the power of "mind cleaning" full credit - it is though what would normally frustrate and agitate you in ordinary life suddenly bears little consequence to you in way of all the bad things that hit us in life. It's a numbing, but of happy and accepting sorts. After 2-3 months of my first mushroom experience I started to notice my patience becoming shorter along with my temper. Now I feel like a prisoner to my temper but sober and thinking clearly every time I drop shrooms.

Meditation is really helpful, I started meditation practice a month ago by taking 10minutes of my time as soon as I wake up, after that I write for 15 to 20 minutes any thought I have after the meditation, usually is what I have to do during the day, and 30 minutes later I'm completely focus on my day and everything I have to do! my mind feels lighter and free. People care and are nicer, no road rage, no rude people or impatient people, they don't push you out of restaurants, the over all pace of life is slower and people talk slower and I'm at peace for the first time in my life. People in the comments section need to stop bitching about how the guy found his retreat boring. Just because he found it boring, doesn't mean he didn't understand what the practice was all about, all it means is his mind had a particular reaction to the experience, one that he had to understand and meditate on. I guarantee if half of you did this, you would also struggle with boredom, that is the entire point of the practice, to deal with whatever emotions arise and train the mind. You can feel boredom and still benefit from the experience and retroactively enjoy it. So y'all get off the guys back until you actually do this yourselves.

The meditator has to battle with 5 mental factors.. - own sensual desires ( desire to see, hear or feel other things instead of experiencing the recommended mental object) -aversion ( to meditate, towards the surroundings, towards facilities, others around him, toward physical discomforts... etc) - boredom and sleepiness ( called sloth and torpor) -restlessness -doubt( about the master, the instructions, own potential..)

As far as cutting hair makes it easier for thoughts to leave, this from my experience is true. That being said it was harder to remember dreams when waking up. I went from long hair with natural forming dreadlocks to buzz cut. With the long hair I could remember dreams way easier and when I thought of something the energy stayed there. When I buzzed my head it was the complete opposite. It literally felt like your thoughts shoot out your head and through your hair so the longer the hair the longer the energy stays. And with dreadlocks the energy you emit gets locked into the hair. That being said after buzzing it it was like their was nothing for the thoughts to hold onto (which could be a good thing if needing to shed unwanted energies.)

it is easy when you do nothing, don't have kids...just meditate...And this is what they got wrong...it is not to have empty mind, but to have the good thoughts and do good, not do nothing. Do nothing = doing evil.

You can meditate anywhere in the world and at any time. Your home right now can be your "temple" just practice a little bit at a time in your daily life. It is up to you. I recommend www.accesstoinsight.org. Also, you can teach yourself you don't have to pay anyone. All humans have the ability to be self-enlightened.

You don't get the point of life. We want more and more when we can live with nothing. I did the same experience in North of India and it was the best thing I ever did. You learn a lot.

The ending reminds me of when people go on New Year's cleanse fasting just to eat junk food again when they're done.

Why? You do need to clean your body everyday then why not mind? Sometimes we need to format our hardisc or clean the junks of our mobile.

Can someone tell me about this where you can meditate in chiang mai? Do they allow women? I hope so. I badly need this. I need to reconnect to myself, to God, to the world and to people. Sometimes i dont even know myself nor know what to do. I hope I could try this 🙏

This is usually called a "meditation retreat" in Thailand, which lasts around 10 - 14 days. It is arranged by many monasteries or meditation centrs in order to clean up your mind and body with the set of mindful meditation. All genders, including LGBT, are welcome. You do not have to change your religion or beliefs to join this retreat.

boring = emptiness = freedom
@deela262
@deela262 3 года назад
The freedom that The Buddha taught was beyond this . ( Hindus yogis teach upto here ) . Boredom is when senses are deprived of pleasures . The maximum attainment through this is a high state of calmness. Thereafter the practitioner need to go into vipassana examinations of mind and matter
