Dave, this is literally the best timing of a video ever. You know why? I'm in Hanoi and I was looking for Nike shoes today but couldn't decide if I have to buy the cheap or expensive ones. Thanks dude!! ✌️

I always wore nike, and they lasted 14 month. I ripped my tendon and changed to a local handmade brand called "Waldviertler". FIVE YEARS I wear them now - and they are still ok! environmental conscious company, responsible to workers, sustainable, leather from certified organic farmers aso.aso. I feel ashame, to do not have stoped earlier to promote nike! Now the sole is worn down and I can send them to "Waldviertler" that they repair and check them ... man, how I respect people who care ...

It's worth noting the effect of the size difference in the shoes. I wear motorcycle boots all the time and if I get an identical slightly larger size they last much longer (months longer) than slightly smaller ones. I think there's less stresses on the materials.

The fake one fell apart quicker because it was tighter, i've had the same issue with a pair of tight shoes, since my foot are not 100% symmetrical i dug a hole like your in the tighter one, that started a chain reaction and destroyed one shoe more than the other (and they are both real since they came from the same box). Now i'm curious to see the part 2 of this video, next year :)

Poe i was going to say this. I have the same problem. I also walk funny and wear out shoes in different areas.
@applesforakbar

Was going to leave a similar comment, if a foot is tight in the toebox it'll always add more stress. Also, I would have said this shoe is more a casual street shoe - it won't withstand the punishment a runner or trainer would. Enjoyed the message and spirit of the video however!

Wow! This is a really great project! I also enjoyed how you fixed the shoe on your own the first time! But for me it looks like it was just because of a small break and I am wondering what would have been with the original with such a small damage at the beginning! But you just presented everything totally nicely! And I would like to see more of these comparisons and maybe even the value chain of a product to understand what we all don't know when we by product.

So precisely last week I came back from a trip to Vietnam and to be honest I bought a lot of fakes, mainly Ralph Lauren t-shirts and things like that, no shoes though, couldn't find my 45EU size in the model I wanted. Being home now, the thing I bought that I think it's the best value it's a leather backpack from a small store Hoi An, it was home made by the family, and being leather I know it can be repaired and last a lifetime, not bad for 50€

1:17 So I prefer to buy 15 times the fake, because it will last longer than the original (8x15 = 120) and it costs the same price. And every 6 months would have a different or new-looking tennis.

It is also worth noting that there is a clear difference on how your different feet and the different sides of your body are making a difference in how the things get "used": anything from a difference in the angle of the pane of your toenail to a slight misalignment in your hip area may have an impact.. but mostly I want to point out that MAINTENANCE starts before breakage, so IF you had noticed that the tip of the sole was wearing thin AND that the fabrice was breaking down EARLIER and had taken care of those things with more skill, there might have been a different outcome, that is not to say that ppl shoudl buy "fake" stuff. I am in favor or paying creators their fair share (but I would like to point out that it is rather rare that big US corp will pay fair labor wages ever) but mostly I am a BIG big fan of "maintenance" (even tho as an adhd person that is the hardest thing for me) Find the holes when they are tiny/just beginning to form. USE needle and thread on fabric and reuse holes in soles where they do exist. But sneakers are almost always mostly glued. Glues are amazing substances but when they cannot be broken down they are a recycling menace (mostly the issue with recycling of photovoltaic cells is the glue. It makes seperating things out harder) But my point is: ONCE something is broken it is trickier to fully repair it again, much better to inspect clothes regularly (incl. shoes) and take care of issues sooner. The less complex material use is part of the R&D the less the higher prices are "justified". also don't drill into your soles ;)

i'm surprised dave doesn't mention that buying 15 pairs of fake shoes to last as long as originals will create some 15x more plastic/rubber waste than one pair of original shoes. the main important difference IMO

I recently heard a news story about how many knock-off products are tied to funding criminal and terrorist networks, often using slave and child labour, so there are serious societal reasons to avoid knock-offs as well as environmental and financial reasons.

In the old days, things were made to last as long as possible. For example, a coat was expensive, because most people could only afford a coat every n years, and when it came undone, it was mended. The same with the shoes. It was a very different mentality, and obviously much more ecofriendly.

lol i think the one in vietnam were the womens version, to my knowledge they are convertable (1.5 USA sizes up down) , however the womens versions are more narrow on avergae. I recently purchased a women's size 9.5 (im 8 in USA size or 41), and they fit will just more narrow but since im used to wearing football cleats it didnt bother me but i can see how it would bother some.

I walk a hell of a lot - in my experience brands and price aren't a good, reliable indicator of quality. I tried expensive, brand hiking / walking boots a few times. They usually last as long, if not less, than smallest-price store-brand hiking / walking boots of the local sport stores. So, for me, experience tells me to always go for the cheap entry-level shoes rather than the expensive real-brand or knock-off fake-brand shoes : they all die under me way too fast anyways.

A tip, because their sizes didn't matched, you should wear the bigger one on your right foot, and the smaller one on the left, this is always the case for right footer, but I have seen it in many left footers too, so when you are trying new shoes, always test the right one (if you are not testing both at the same time).

I always buy the same pair of leather sneakers, after my first pair felt into pieces on a rough hike in India and 5 years of use. Clarks Sneakers ~100€=20€/year - that is quality and cheap :) Why I call the brand? Because its deserved. Never found fabric shoes lasting more than 1-2years. Ofc you can also go for the framed leather shoes for 300€ which are repairable. But repairing in Europe is so questionable expensive... And repairing shoes, as you found out, is usually beyond DIY.
@FriedrichKegel

And about fake shoes - i got some relatively expensive shoes from India. The problem was the same there the sole was super soft - so made to break.

I'd be interested to see how this new opposite pair does. I have a feeling the wear pattern might actually be similar. I have pairs of shoes (well, foot "gloves" really. FiveFingers from Vibram) that have lasted me literally 5-10 years, and had THOUSANDS of miles put into them in that time. I know where they are going to wear out, because I know what wear patterns my gait is going to cause. But I also know that Vibram knows how to make a good rubber sole (since they are really a rubber company). Perhaps someone who treats shoes like you do, should buy better shoes to begin with? Nike doesn't exactly make GOOD QUALITY shoes...

Well except you didn't go into the detail of Nike's slave wages to laborers in China, and that they also use lesser quality now than they used to, all to make higher profits. Sure they've done R&D but they already know what kind of soles to make for runners, etc. The question here is the above items where Nike skimps but charges highway robbery prices. The Vietnamese shoes suffer quality and fill landfills quicker, but if someone is pinched for money, it will be a deciding factor.

that's ok, if you don't live with minimum wages in underdeveloped countries, maybe in misery ... sometimes the original is so expensive that it can never be bought by some people ... or by many in certain regions ... regions that you must have visited it yourself ... and you do your part very well to change the situation by taking accessible technology, but it takes a very long time for these things to change, especially in the economic bias of inequalities in which we live ... In addition, large industries contribute to maintaining these places in this way, to have cheap labor and to be able to sell their product at great profits ... as nike did when he enslaved children a little while ago ... sometimes pirated products in the same places are forms of resistance against those who just take without replacing anything ... hugs!

A little disappointed this video ended in you supporting Nike buying a new pair of shoes. Go to any thriftstore and buy a pair that are perfectly good for a few dollars. Even cheaper then the knockoffs. And your good for another year or so. I have never bought a new pair of shoes in my adult life. If all the money that has been put into research and development of new shoes was spent on perfectly good shoes that had already been invented a hundred years prior everyone would have free shoes for life.
