Brynn is diagnosed with Rett syndrome and considered nonverbal. I talked to Brynn as if she was a typical five year old that understood every word I spoke. She responded by using every ounce of her energy to give me a hug.
OMG! When Brynn was looking at Chris deep into his eyes for a little while, and then gave him a hug just melted my heart. 😊😌 What a sweet and cute little girl she is, and I absolutely love her giggles. 🥰
Special books for special kids brings awareness to people who don't realize what caring for a special needs can mean. She is awesome. I appreciate this channel and "Born Different" for helping me to better understand that" special needs people" are indeed people with feelings, hopes, dreams and bad days just like the rest of us but their challenges are different. The best warriors get the toughest challenges. Stay blessed.
Brynn is such a sweetie! She definitely responds and understands what is being said. I was a night nurse for a 17 year old girl with RETT. She had her moments of laughing, However I think she has a much harder time processing information than Brynn. She didn't really respond to anyone in a way that I could discern. And she really only liked one tv show. But I believe that's just because she has a hard time accessing/processing information. Apparently there is absolutely hope for a drug that will reverse RETT completely. My former patient is so healthy and strong. She gets excellent physical therapy and will be able to do anything she wants pretty quickly when the drug has been tested and on the market. Which apparently will be in the next few years. And that's so awesome.
RETT SYNDROME • Autosomal Dominant inheritance • MECP2 gene defect • Only affects females • History of normal development till about 5-6 months : followed by decrease in head size and regression of milestones • characteristic midline hand wringing movements • prognosis is poor • in DSM - 5 , Rett syndrome was removed from the cluster of autism spectrum disorders because it clearly has an underlying genetic basis.
