Do you want to know what it's like to live with the brand new 2022 KTM 890 Adventure? I'll tell you all about it, after riding it for 2 weeks straight here's what I really think about this motorcycle.
Is it the best Adventure Tourer on the market? Best value for money? Let's find out as we put it on the Dyno to see how much power it makes compared to the 890 Duke fitted with the Remus exhaust!
Here's my first impression review: • KTM 890 Adventure | 20...

I recently got a 2022 890 Adventure and there is zero buyer's remorse in the first several weeks with the bike. Coming from the Pan America, a 2018 KTM 1290 SA-R, and a 2018 Kawasaki KLR 650, this bike is a much better fit for my 5'8" height and 30.5" inseam. I was worried that the smaller physical size would be a detriment on freeway rides but there isn't much difference from the larger bikes. The smaller size is far better to push the bike around the garage, driveway, trail, etc... That closer to the ground seat height really helps me out coming to a stop, all that preparing for the stop by shifting my body to one side so I can reach the ground with one foot is gone now. This makes a big difference when I'm on long rides and fatigue sets in. KTM, thanks for making a superb bike for us shorter riders.

I came from a tenere 700. I noticed first a very noisy engine, then slick gear changes then huge amount more power. The screen is good but needs more height. The low centre of gravity is excellent and confidence inspiring. It's got distinct looks that grow. I love it and hope it will be as good on reliability as my T700 was.

94HP rear wheel vs 105HP KTM claims at the crankshaft. You say the 94 RWHP is "a little bit down"! My friend, between the crank and the rear wheel there are many components you seem to dismiss completely! All of these components eat up some of the "raw crank" HP. First up is the flywheel and the flywheel effects of the spinning transmission gears and the sprockets, next is the friction loss between the several transmission gears and shafts used during the dyno pull, next is the O-ring chain that has rubber or rubber polymer O-rings squeezed tightly between the inner and outer links of the chain so as to prevent dirt, dust, grime, water, salt, etc. from getting inside to the chain's rollers where the factory grease lives. The O-rings do a great job of keeping out the dirt so that your adventure bike chain seems to last forever, but the price for that long term convenience is extra friction which robs horsepower. Then there are the sprockets and chain interface - the chain often tends to "stick" to the sprockets with a high powered engine, so every sprocket revolution has another small frictional loss. Then there is the elephant in the room - the massive rear wheel + tire + brake disk inertial load plus whatever bearing friction the wheel has, and of course at high wheel speeds, there is windage loss as the adventure tire tread fights it's way through the air - even spinning on the dyno. Finally, there is a non-trivial loss of HP as the tire rotates against the dyno wheel, creating friction losses as heat. (measured in calories or Watts loss). Amazingly, the claimed crank HP minus the dyno rear wheel HP is ONLY 11 HP! That my friend is amazing. However, I would wager that the true crank HP of the 890 is even higher than 105. KTM publishes crank HP since they can maintain strict laboratory control over the operating conditions (proper gasoline, fresh oil, clean air and oil filters, properly tuned EFI) since none of the variables mentioned above come into play at all. I know a guy who brags (??) that he never lubes or cleans his chains! I asked him "Never?" What else does he not service? Can you imagine the losses of his neglected drivetrain?

Right, on cars you account for a 15% drop in power from the crank to the wheels on a performance car that is a bit tighter than a cruiser. Still, kind of cool he dino'ed it. Just a little better understanding for the power loss to the rear wheel, and he's good-to-go.

Had mine for a few weeks and 420 miles and love it. However, you’re too kind to the stock seat. It’s dreadful and for a “travel” bike (KTM’s description) with excellent tank range totally ludicrous. I have an “Ergo” seat which is barely better but keeps my bum warm. I have a gear change issue where 1st does not properly engage and jumps to neutral or 2nd. Otherwise I’m with you. A great machine and so much easier than the Africa Twin Adventure Sport DCT it replaces. Above all it’s fun. The ATAS and GSA before it are great bikes but missing that fun factor. I’m hoping to ride to Europe this year and a 4,000 mile und trip should test it’s capabilities (and mine……).
