I have a SR-F for 64000km now. Great bike for commuting 170km a day and weekend trips of 200km without charging. Or longer trips is best to charge every 100km for 30minutes (I got 12.6kW max charging). Instant power at any speed and almost no maintenance is just 👌🏍⚡️

Impressive! I can see people easily doing that every day..... But that seat would have to go for that milage for me.

Why is it that when I went to demo an SRF, it was fully charged and showing 140km of range. Then through 25 km of city and 25km of country roads I was at 50%, without a heavy throttle hand. I understand that I had to pay to unlock the top 20% of the battery ( a deal killer in itself), but these ranges being quoted are nowhere near the reality I experienced.

Hello, I currently own several motorcycles, Bmw 1200 Gs, Harley fat boy, Honda 1300 st. I also have a Zero sr/f, I leave my home with a full charge which costs me 2.28 euros with a range of 200 km. I ride on a country road, at the authorized speed, and I recharge my motorcycle after 150 km of riding at a 22 kW terminal with a charging capacity of 12 KW in my motorcycle. My charging time at this terminal is 40 minutes, taking a little collaboration to recover 180 km and the sum of 2 euros. That's a day's ride and a 300 km journey for less than 5 euros of fuel. In good weather (I'm Belgian) I go out 2 to 3 times a week for this type of walk. With another of my motorcycles, each of my rides costs me + - 23 euros per day plus maintenance, oil, filters. Over a motorcycle season the difference is significant. My motorcycle is second-hand. I agree that new is still expensive, but I love this bike. Happy New Year to everyone and good luck ✌

I really like the idea. I have an electric car which just works and is pretty amazing to drive. If the bike did 150 miles plus a little in reserve, was priced in line with a premium ice bike and the buyer didn't get charged for what I'd consider essential items such as the charging lead, id try one. Unfortunately I wouldn't be prepared to pay more and accept a load of compromises. Hopefully the price will come down and the range will go up. Cheers 👍

@@nickbetts2244 Hello, yes I agree with your arguments. There is still a lot of progress to be made in the field of electric motorcycles. Currently, there is the price and the autonomy constraints. But I love riding the small, hilly country roads, and there, it is much more fun than my GS or my Fat-Boy. Try it out on small country roads, it's the best way to get an idea of the pleasure it gives you. ✌

Hi Exmouth. As you already know, I really like this bike ( although I'd have to do something about that bloody seat ) but it's just way too expensive to be widely adopted, which it deserves to be. It's one thing paying a lot of money for a well made bike but to pay a premium for having less range and more worry every time you go out on the bike is a hard sell. Also, this locking out of features unless you've paid for them is a real two fingered salute to those people brave enough and rich enough to lay down their cash to buy one. Electric motorcycles like this one are the future. But they need to be priced at ICE levels. As you say, to increase range they could easily dial the power back a bit. I believe that the Zeros do have an ECO mode to extend range but judging by Marc Travels videos, it's still bloody fast even in ECO mode. They could definitely try to find a better balance between range and performance I reckon. But none of that matters if they are going to continue to be so expensive. Somebody like Triumph could really clean up if they brought out a much more affordable electric motorcycle where range and charging times were prioritised over performance. Heck, even a renowned tight wad like myself might consider blowing his self-imposed €7k new bike price limit for one of those ! Cheers Steve, love to the Exmouth crew, Garry & Ruby
@exeterrider
@exeterrider 10 месяцев назад
Hi Dave, Yes, the prices are just "richmans territory" and with everything getting tight around the world, a huge effort needs to be made it getting the bikes out there and bums on seats...sadly they didn't do that with this bike or any of the Zeros and relyed on dealers who don't know about that side of things anyway to get exposure. Noiw it could be too little too late! Yeap, we need ICE pricing ,and yet that dosent seem to be possiable and a million miles off from it! Shame because I would have one any day and could make the range work. el outro , Hope you have a good week Dave and look after rupit with lots of beef.

Can’t see how reducing the power output of the motor will make the bike significantly more economical. Ok, you’d save a few kg that could be redirected to more battery capacity. The main factor for any e-bike’s efficiency is the bike + rider drag and the velocity. A powerful e-bike cruising at 60mph will be using about 5kW of power, just the same as if you replaced the motor with a weaker one. So, it’s not the same as with the ICE, where bigger capacity and tuning for higher power gives lower mpg figures. Electric motors are highly efficient whatever their max power / load / rpm.

As an EV user as well as ICE would I buy one? No! 1. 7kW charging should be standard as an absolute minimum for commuter bikes. Bikes like this need proper rapid charging. It’s around on cars up to 400kW or similar not relying on 13amp chargers. 2. Halve the power, still getting fab real world performance and suddenly the range gets better. Remember ev performance is vastly better to comparable ICE due to instant continuous 100% full fat torque. Suddenly most issues are removed. But they aren’t. And charging extra for a cable to meet a standard EV wall box? Outrageous. They should be offering the flaming wall box FOC anyway. It smacks of amateurs playing to make a quick buck. I’m not incandescent with rage but I am pretty much fuming at the state of the industry…AAAARRRRGH

Hi Steve.. Excellent stream with Garry few days ago. Personally, I am ok with EVs. Still battery chemistry needs improvements but most E-motorcycles that I know of lack design. I find them very ugly but it is subjective. This is not the case for e-scooters, they just look like scooters. I don't know what will happen 10-15 years from now with the ICE ban.

Just my opinion but..... In regard to your comments on producing a model with less speed/power to increase range. There is not a lot of increase to be realized in reducing the speed/power of the bikes in the case of a full sized E road bike. Battery packs large enough to deliver this kind of range generally have enough amp output to satisfy some serious acceleration without being designed strictly for that purpose. As to the motor yes you could save some weight there but again in there is not a lot to be gained. The main gains with current technology are IMO seen through aerodynamics and regenerative and other controller programming strategies. So when you consider the first thing many potential buyers look at is specs, the returns to be seen in power reduction vs the loss in sales to be seen dictates their marketing strategy. Richard Gavle

They are making them look like motorbikes now which is good compared to the space age monstrosities of even 3 years ago. It all depends what you want it for. Touring? No, you need ICE. Day out to Plymouth/Penzance/Woolacombe? No, you need ICE. Work out the realistic range, half it, get your compass out and make a circle round your house. Will you stay mostly in the circle? Get an electric. A lot of people have more than one bike as there aren't many that do everything you want. My question. My son says his electric pulls away sharply and stops sharply so I have to be aware of that. How did you find the Zero? Is it something you need to be prepared for? Loved the LIVE the other day. Will you be doing them this winter?

For an electric motor it does not matter how much power you have on how efficient it is. The Tesla Model S Plaid has 1000hp but is almost as efficient as the long range variant. This is very different from ICE fossil fuel vehicles. Range is dependent on how fast you go (so how conservative your hand is really, or which mode you are in) and how big the battery pack is. So I do not agree on giving it less power!
@exeterrider

I agree , my take on it is that there are so many ways to make electricity, wind, solar, waves etc and in many ways its going in the right direction when you compare it to how long and 100s of billions of quid is going into making the new Hinkley point which is a mind blowing Huge project. I reckon in 100 years time, farms will be filled with solar panels rather than grain or whatever. For me as much as I would like to keep ICE vehicles , I think it is a forward step to try and stop chucking shite into the air even though granted these days engines are much cleaner....I don't say this for the Ozone layer but for us breathing that crap in, its really bad, although were healthy I would imagine it has done harm to 10s of millions breathing it in. The problem is the human beings managing the process will always make a proper cock up of it ,and the whole situation will go wrong because thats the way its always been. I agree plugging into the grid dosent make sense to a limit and there is alot to be said for nuclear power but overall for me, as much as I love the ICE, things do need to move on one way or another and it wont happen efficiently anytime soon. The problem with EV is how it has been sold (pushed) on to us. If EV was so fantastic, as it is advertised, then the powers that should not be, would not need to manipulate the market to favour it over anything else. Couple that with the current range (useless and subjective to many contributory factors) and ludicrous charging times, then I am afraid they have tarnished the projects image & hence the hard sell.

I can see the battery powered bikes have advantages in some areas. I can see Kawasaki hybrid as a better step depending on cost. I had recently bought a Zero SR/S (basically an SR/F with a fairing). Not a perfect bike but it is pretty darn well-executed. Been trying to buy a used BMW C Evolution electric scooter but I couldn't find one. I found my SR/S Premium (6kW charger vs 3kW on base model) with 1100 miles for less than $10k, which when new was $21k. Was a no-brainer for someone wanting an electric motorcycle. My biggest complaint is the cruise control. I love cruise control on bikes but I hate how they incorporated it into the right hand controls. I have to be very careful turning on CC and setting it since I end up having to be careful I don't inadvertently twist the grip. It is bad if in setting CC, I loosen my grip and end up slowing down (regen-ing in the process). Even worse is having a compromised grip trying to reach the CC button and you twist the throttle and accelerate harder than you wanted. The right hand could easily come off the grip. I keep my big BMW K1600 GTL for my long trips but I always take out the Zero on the thinnest excuse to go for a ride.

I really like the bikes, but I don't think Zero are doing enough over here getting the bikes too market and feel they may have missed the wave now. They are classy bikes for sure. I totally agree with you about the cruise control...its all set up wrong there. Those K1600s are amazing bits of kit. Thanks for watching mate.

Thanks for this review Exeter. I wish more vloggers would review electric bikes, (because we're all going to have to use them after 2035, unless buying second hand). I summarise the points you make below as it helps me to digest your review: 190Nm torque If price came down it would be good value good range 123mph no vibration narrow, nimble good in town not for a pillion seat ok for rider maybe too powerful £450 for charging cable excessive. I also wonder whether you could plug this in to an 13A extension cable? Necessary where I live. Price £23000 approx, so no UK buyers except Tesla owners. Disadvantages I noticed: a whine upon acceleration 227kg wet weight - deters older riders.
@exeterrider
@exeterrider 9 месяцев назад
Hi ,and Thanks Geoff...Yes the weight could put older folk off your quite right, I quite enjoy the whine myself but I can see why many others wouldn't enjoy it. Thanks for tuning in.

I like the ideal of electric bikes as I hate the agro of getting fuel. What would put me off buying one of these new is the fact that they were something like £23000 new and and you can go buy a second hand one for £13000. 12 months old with 500 miles on the clock in Exeter today. They've had it a while too, before Zero knocked £3500 off the new ones which makes the second hand ones seem overpriced at 13k now. Not great if you are selling one. My other problem is the whole idea of buying the entire bike then having the pay more to unlock hardware that is already on it. I've heard talk of restricting battery cells, therefore range and not allowing use of heated grips that are on the bike unless you pay to enable them. I don't know if that ever happened but it's kinda shady business. Range and recharge time wouldn't put me off one of these, the £400 cable that should really come with the bike if they can knock 1000's off in the winter to make room for next years model and locking hardware already on the bike behind a paywall would put me off.
@exeterrider
@exeterrider 10 месяцев назад
I couldn't agree more Dr B... the whole paying for more even though its there is a kick in the teeth to someone who will already take the plunge to be loyal and buy into the brand..... It's no wonder we don't see these bikes riding around the motherland (Exeter) when the prices are as they are and they want more for some basics . They are not helping themselves and by the sounds of it if they got things right then you could be a customer, but as it stands they need to work harder on pulling people in. Missed you at the re-union...it was a good night in the end, although not the normal turn out it still went well. Cheers mate

It's not your channel or you in particular, but anyone putting up electrical bikes is just advertising for the government, they can't even sort out the basics. (Feed and house the homeless 1st I say) The structure isn't there, nor is the will for proper bikers or anyone for that matter to go electric. Have we all lost our collective minds ? 20 grand for what is in reality nothing more than a comuter bike with barely 100 mile range and pretty basic equipment is ridiculous and then they want to rip you off for a charge cable and options. I'm sorry I know reveiwers have to try and keep manufacturers happy to keep getting bikes but the reality is this is daylight robbery. Just think of the bikes that are available for this amount of money even when you've ticked all the options. You could have a bike that comes with a 250 mile range that has, heated grips, heated seats, top of the range ohlins, adaptive cruise control etc. etc.. This thing has switchgear that looks like it came off a Lexmoto it has J.Juan brakes that again you would expect to see on a bike that costs less than a quarter of this. I am absolutely o.k with the idea of Electric bikes for commuting but they need to be at commuting price if they are ever going to be taken seriously.

Thanks you for the excellent, unbiased review. I agree with your comments, in particular that the pricing formulae need to be adjusted to make the tech affordable to the average person. The range does not particularly bother me, I use my IC machine for touring and long rides, an electric bike with 100 mile range is more than enough for trips to the supermarket and typical Sunday afternoon rideouts. The range is also more than enough for my commute - although let’s be honest, I only use my bike for commuting on warm, dry days, otherwise I prefer sit in the traffic Jams listening to the radio. I increasingly feel that electric bikes are the future, it’s likely I’ll get one in the next couple of years, while also retaining my old petrol machine. Reviews like yours definitely influence my choice.

Thanks very much. Yes I still think its the way things are going...The transition will be very messy and it will price many people out I feel... I really want this to work but in areas the electric move is getting messier everyday and they seem to be doing a lot wrong....Zero have made a good bike here but unless marketing and distribution is tackled head on then it will always be a "back burner" bike. Let me know if you do go electric. I'm the same, a 100 mile range is something I could work with.

Its not a bad looking bike by any stretch. Having to keep my electric work van at home the only thing that annoys me is public charging, its starting to cost far too much and the chargers are either super busy or never working. The performance of every electric bike I have rode has left me smiling, its such a great feel from the burst of acceleration, I'm not a big loving of the annoying noise they make but horses for courses. For city riding and commuting, I really do think electric bikes is a good way to go, if you're never going to be going out of a city then these are great. Sorry, what do you mean no one needs a bike to be able to do 120mph+? 🤣 you and me must ride slightly differently 🤣 Great video mate, very fairly spoken, the future is coming whether we like it or not, I just hope there is an option and that people will be allowed to decide for themselves.

I am not against electric motorcycles, but if I understand it correctly, I would pay a truckload of money for a motorcycle with already built in facilities, that I can't use unless I pay an extra ransom to have them unlocked? I think that's a despicable business model, and certainly one I won't have anything to do with, so under those conditions there's zero chance that my next bike will be a Zero.

Some tool! 125mph? Now we're talking (for an e-bike) I get what you say about less power = more range but i think it'll be a selling point. Look at 'busas and Bmw 1000r's, nobody NEEDS that power but it sells them doesnt it?. As for the torque, well! 190 n/m you say? Compare that to the measly 50? N/m of my old thing, and i thought she pulled well low down!. Range is still a bit of a bugbear ( actually the range is ok, its the anxiety of where you're going to charge and the time that it takes) nice review! 👍

Zero could EASILY provide an extreme range mapping option on the phone app which would limit top speed and acceleration. There's third party software available for this already. I seem to remember a couple of Zero riders playing with this on RU-vid years ago. There was an American teacher who rigged up fast chargers and did a big roadtrip. I would actually like to see what's possible on the Zero with "manual" hypermiling (ie very gentle throttle hand).I did this on my NC750DCT and managed over 100mpg in "boring old man" mode. Not much fun, but shows you what's possible.

I was under the impression Lithium can be recycled energy but not to its original power output. The mining part is very messy... that being said I think everything starts off uneconomical (A bit like petrol) but takes years to process a non-impactful system of making this work....million miles to go for that though....no doubt it will get messy with all the people making money out of it. @spiritusinfinitus
@spiritusinfinitus 10 месяцев назад
To be like-for-like, electric bikes would need a battery pack of around 25kWh at least. To achieve this on a bike you need a higher battery energy density than we have today.. Things like Teslas which have some of the highest real world density are approaching 300 Wh/kg energy density. To get something that'd squeeze into a bike frame and give half decent range you'd need about 400 Wh/kg, which incidentally is where electric aeroplanes become commercially viable. CATL, the world's biggest battery maker said earlier this year that they are putting a 500 Wh/kg battery into production soon. We're probably talking 5-10 years before they achieve manufacturing economies of scale, then, Bingo, you have affordable electric bikes at cost parity with petrol equivalents.
@spiritusinfinitus
@spiritusinfinitus 10 месяцев назад
@@exeterriderYou're right.. EV batteries are around 95% recyclable and recycling the lithium from an already manufactured battery is much less energy intensive than mining new ore and refining it from scratch. You effectively end up with a circular manufacturing process of manufacture-recycling-manufacture over the course of 20 odd years. Interestingly Tesla's co-founder and CTO, JB Straubel left Tesla and started up a company called Redwood Materials which is focusing on exactly this.
