Livonia, MI Emerson Middle School Whelen WPS-3000 Tornado Siren Test December 1st, 2007

This was located behind Livonia Emerson Middle School which was the closest Tornado Siren to my house during that time. This siren has been replaced by a Federal Signal 2001-130 but the new siren is about a quarter of a mile north of this location near a Firestone Auto Shop. I am now the owner of this siren and it only cost me $300 to purchase it from West Shore Services. Don't ask why that cheap, that is how much it really cost. The siren being heard in the background before this winds up is a Thunderbolt 1000 coming from Jaycee Park in Redford Twp.

I keep coming back to this video because of this creepy Wail tone. The old analog ESC-864 has the BEST sounding Wail tone on an electronic siren, in my opinion. It is nice and slow, and it has good depth.

Amen to that. When ever I find a way to wire it up in a way where no one but me can only hear it, I will try to get a video of it going off inside my garage but that is going to take a long time for that to happen.

Before they started to take the siren down, I called them and letted them know that I want to buy it after it gets taken down. They told me how much the cost was going to be then we payed them before they took it down then they took care of it there. You see you pretty much want to contact the place that is responsible for installing and unstalling sirens and you ask them that you are willing to purchase the siren and they should be able to let you.

The beginning seems so creepy and eerie. You've got that T-Bolt in the background which for some reason sounds like a creepy old bell, the wind is completely gone, the sky is cloudy, and 3016s winding up sound weird too. Cool video still and congrats on owning this siren!

We only had 1 EOWS-612. The rest were 3 decommissioned 2016s, 5 3016s, two 2001-DCs, and 1 SRN.

That siren your hearing at the beginning is a Thunderbolt 1000 coming from Jaycee Park in Redford Twp which is about 1 and 3 quarter miles away from this siren.

Yes it was cold there. I was sighing at the beginning because I saw people comming towards me and I was going to feel fustrated but when that siren turned on, I got excited.

This is very realistic except for the fact that it kinda just abruptly starts (happens on all Whelen sirens) unlike a Loudoun siren (ES-5000DC)

@StarwolfTsuname To be honest with you, this place actually DID use to have a Thunderbolt but that was before 1988 though. This siren your looking at in the video replaced the Thunderbolt in April of 1988. I have this siren inside my garage and I found a paper inside the control box that had a list of information about this siren and the date was shown as April of 1988. Livonia probably installed their T-bolts in the 1950's to 1980's.

Yeah, the siratone 612 that you taped was a really good one. But those 2001 DCs definately should not have been replaced. The DCs are some of the best 2001 sirens out there. They don't seem to have these pitch variation problems like the newer ones have now. THanks for replying to my comment.

You look at your old sirens and see if there is a newer one that is still being made right by the siren. That's a clue that the older siren is getting replaced.

Echo would depend on what terrain the siren is near by or if there is a few stores to have the sound bounce off. Usually when I film sirens, I try not to get any closer then 100 feet away from the siren.

Now, I agree with you about that. Having a siren in service for only 10 years is bad. It seems like the older federal products last a really long time. Some sirens from the 50s are still in service in some places. I'll probably get some of those newer 2001 sirens on film some time. All of the 2001 sirens that I got so far, seemed really good, but maybe I'll run into one soon that has pitch problems. A new one has been put up recently, but doesn't get tested for some reason.

Yeah, the siratone 612 you taped was a very good one. But the 2001 DCs that were replaced should not have been. They sounded great, and like I said, those DCs are some of the best 2001 sirens out there. They don't seem to have these pitch variation problems like the newer ones have. I actually miss this siren. A Janitor I talk to at my high school tells me there is a Thunderbolt on top of Emerson here but I never saw it. I will need to walk around the school and investigate because I thought they had all been taken down in this area. can anyone confirm that there is an actual Tbolt at this school?

@roombafan56001 Most of Macomb County runs their sirens in Alert Signal which is steady tone. Sterling Heights has a system of Whelen 3016s and they run in Alert Signal as well. Parts of Wayne County test their sirens in Alert Signal as well but Livonia does Attack Signal. To be honest with you, Livonia seems to be the only city in the Metropolitan area that runs their sirens in Attack Signal. If you have anymore questions, let me know.

It seems like federal 2001s are becoming so popular, that towns are replacing perfectly good other sirens for no reason. Like in Fargo North Dakota for example, that one siratone 612 that they replaced was a perfectly good one. I'm glad that where I live, they don't repalce their sirens for no reason. If I were running the Livonia VIllage Hall, I would have refused to replace the perfectly good Whelen 3016s, siratone 612s, and 2001 DCs.

@austinizawesome95 You would be correct. Emerson Middle School is onj W Chicago St just east of Middlebelt Rd. Your not really gonna be able to see the siren in streetview from the front of the school cause it was in the back, but if you do street view on garden st just east of the back of the school, you can barely see it on street view. You can also look in my discription for pictures of this siren and where it was located as well.

The siren you hear at the beginning before this went off is Jaycee Park Redford's Thunderbolt 1000. The only other sirens what would've been heard in the background while this was sounding would be another Whelen 3000 doing wail just like this one about 2 miles north of this location and Shelden Park's 612 doing Alternate Wail 2 miles to the west. Both of those sirens cannot be heard in this video but the echo of this is what may seem like multiple sirens are being heard in the background. This and Shelden Park's 612 both had incredible echoes as the sound waves bounced off the surrounding school and stores.

Alright he is the story, so Canonball films, is friends with Siren1000T, canonball happened to live in Livonia, so he bought the siren. The siren is on multiple videos on his channel, just search up “Sheldon Park EOWS 612”

hey siren how far do you have to be to get a good siren recording and not get hearing damage? this october i recorded the siren at the fire station and i was too short on time and i didn't bring any sound protection. so how far should i be from the siren to not only NOT get affected my the sound and also get the echo great?

No problem at all. Well one 2001 DC in Livonia actually got moved to a different location and is wired up so that is a good thing. I don't know where they put the other one at though. So we actually got 10 2001-130s, 1 SRN, and 1 DC. I agree about the SRNBs and 130s having pitch problems. Its all Federal Signal's fault. That's why I don't like FS anymore they just now make crappy designs and the new 2001s might only last 10 years at the most. Those Tempest-128s can about 30 years.

You'll understand when you live in a city full of Whelens that they aren't that great. They do a good job, but they aren't the best. Electronic sirens have their applications, but for a full blown city-wide or county-wide system, it's not practical. Electronic sirens in general are bigger maintenance hogs than mechanical sirens.

I loved it. Had lots of memories there. I even went to Emerson Middle School back in 2002 after my 6th grade year at Grant Elementary. Yes, even back then, I've ALWAYS looked at the siren every time I went to school.

No, it's WPS. WS was 1970's to early 1980's technology. This one is late 80's.

My school needs one of these, or a sentry. So a at every lunch period, my teacher has no choice but to let us line up. And we can use the as the school's only outdoor P.A. and bell.

@@Siren1000T1 I live in livonia and I know how far the the thunderbolt 1000 in Jaycee park is.I even took a drive by it last weekend and I'm suprised that it is still there. I'm just kind of puzzled because I didn't think that the sound from the t bolt could reach out so far. But I guess that the t bolt is only like a 7 min drive from Emerson.

REZUP 213 Thunderbolts have a blower which forces air up into the siren head to make it louder and help the sound carry farther.

@tbolt siren lover 1003 actually I hear a thunderbolt from canton ohio, and I live in east canton. I don't know the specific location but I know it's a bolt. Although its a very faint sound so I really have to listen for it. The bolt thats closest to me is about 13 miles from me so that says a lot to me.

Not really. Ours have been serving us for as long as ive lived here and there has not been one single problem with the whelens at all.

@Stickymajorwow Yeah this did sound pretty eerie from my house (especially during a Tornado Warning). Hearing this and the Shelden EOWS together from my house kinda made me think that I'm screwed.
