Think it'd be fun to do some of the more design-heavy dishes that're easy to make but have a lot more to them on the motif side like Sayu's signature one, which I believe is just onigiri but made to look like tanuki.

whenever ive had people see chinese dishes irl and go "isnt that a dish from genshin?", yes i do cringe a little but for the most part i am genuinely happy because whether people realize it or not, this is cultural representation. i was playing with an a fellow asian friend one time and we were checking out sumeru for the first time and they went "ooh whats panipuri?" and i was like "are you shitting me right now?" but i get it yaknow? its moments like that where i feel like representation like this matters so much. i'm glad you made a video like this, its really special

The story of the dongpo rou that I read was that while they were in the process of rebuilding, he wanted to thank them for their hard work and made this dish for all the workers as well as giving out the recipe to all of them My memory might be a little skewed since I wasn't as focused on that lesson😂

I studied abroad in 浙江大学 in 杭州 a few years ago and TIanshu Meat reminds me of one of my favorite dishes when I was in China: 梅干菜焖肉 (basically braised pork belly w/ dried vegetables). Not included in the video but as a Canto speaker, I was enthralled when I saw literal Dim Sum in Genshin like Crystal Shrimp/Fullmoon Egg (Har Gow and Shumai that everyone loves) I love how Genshin opens players up to IRL dishes ppl would've otherwise never heard of

Some tack-on notes: - Buddha Jumps over the Wall usually uses rich and dried foods. Reconstituting these goods in wine in a pot enriches the flavor. Yes it's extra AF :) - Dong Bo Rou - Just like to point out that its pork belly meat. The fat is soft and the meat is tender. "Melts in your mouth" typically describes the dish. - Almond Tofu - Chinese Almond Kernels usually refer to European / Old World / Bitter almond kernels. These have a stronger almond taste (I think it's the chemical Benzaldehyde?) - you'll love Almond Tofu if you love Marzipan and Maraschino cherries. Because Bitter almond can be more poisonous in large numbers, it's usually suggested you get the pre-made essence which is in safe proportions rather than make it yourself. - Osmanthus is a real flower often used by Chinese to flavor food. Most commonly in tea, but also as Osmanthus Jelly which you can find in some Dim Sum restaurants.
@luca6821
@luca6821 Год назад
A reason why apricot kernels (which are also called bitter almonds) aren't used as much anymore is because their contain high quantities of cyanide, which one would rather ingest as little as possible xD

I love your authentic enthusiasm when teaching your passionate cuisines! I can tell you have made the dishes yourself already before, and have accumulated knowledge for it. I stopped playing Genshin over a year, but the most memorable relationship I can say, is that Keqing is mentioned quite a lot with glazed shrimp balls. And one day I happened to have a lunch at Chinese buffet, and they had one! When I tried it, that was the best thing I could have in LIFE.

I'm half-Chinese and I unfortunately don't know much about my own culture until recently when I learned to appreciate it more and try to learn more. My late grandmother used to make braised pork belly and as I got older I tried making my own, but could never achieve the same flavor. I'm glad you were able to show how diverse China actually is and the rich history of our culinary traditions

Cooking is a special interest of mine, I specially LOVE japanese cuisine and about a year ago I became interested in chinese gastonomy because of genshin. I'm so happy that Mihoyo took the cooking part of the game and used it to share the cultures they're representing with each nation. Food is a BIG part od everyday life and, as you say chinese moms do, can be used to express many things or even understand how the people of that culture live. I've already tried almond tofu (and I looooove it!), mora meat, tianshu meat, fried raddish balls (soooo good!), golden shrimp balls and fullmoon egg. Next I wanna try triple-layered consomé (Kòusānsī), lotus flower crisp (looks yummy!), jewelry soup (Zhēnzhū Fěicuì Báiyù Tāng) and chicken tofu pudding (dòuhuā). I have to say though this way of exploring chinese culture is hard. It has made me, a bit forcefully, more tolerant to spice. That's nice. I now enjoy a low-to-moderate level of hottness in my meals and it's soooo good. More variety! Another game that introduced me to various aspects of chinese culture is Legend of the Phoenix. They host many (MANY) events every 10 days or so and they're always themed and you learn about different things. There was one about Peking Opera, one about the use of the mortise-tenon joints and structures in achitecture, recently one about dian cha (fruty art tea from Song Dynasty).... It's really enriching.
@ying_verse

Hunan cuisine sounds interesting. Wonder if they do anything vegetarian. I like spicy and salty foods, but am vegetarian and I'm aware a lot of food is made with meat or gelatin, so I'm intrigued!

Or I might've eaten it topped with almond milk once, I'm not sure. My mom would buy the almond tofu already made in a box at the market, and we'd just dig into it with a spoon and put it in individual bowls to eat. (Also I dunno why people think there's tofu in it, for me it was always clearly almond milk jelly. Though I was pretty surprised to learn that it's traditionally made with apricot kernels.
