Liz to Aoi Tori (Liz and The Blue Bird) Ensemble Scene

I don't really upload much, let alone actual Anime stuff, but recently (July 18th) was the 1 year memoriam of the Kyoto Animation arson attack. Kyoani has made a lot of very beautiful and breathtaking works, and are the gold standard of Anime. This scene is one of my favorites in a movie, with a mixture of the score and the animation, along with the story being told. I looked online and only found a handful of videos showcasing this scene, none of which are of particularly high quality, so I decided to create and upload my own. I purposefully scaled this movie to 4K, to eliminate as much RU-vid compression as possible, and cropped out the black bars on the top and bottom for better viewing in non-16:9 formats. This should be the best possible version you can find on RU-vid.
Liz to Aoi Tori (Liz and The Blue Bird) is a sequel movie to Hibike Euphonium (Sound Euphonium), a show about a Highschool Brass Band, their past, and their goal to win the Nationals. The show has 2 seasons that follow the main character, Kumiko, and her fellow classmates, and the drama they ensue. Two of the many classmates are Mizore and Nozomi, who have a close past of their own that is somewhat covered in the show. This movie, Liz to Aoi Tori, takes place after the second season of the show, but focuses entirely on Mizore and Nozomi, and their relationship. It's a beautiful movie with a differing art style to that of the show, and is a must watch for those who have watched Hibike.
This movie, and the show, is about a band, with instruments that they learn to play, and Kyoto Animation did a fantastic job with the recreation of proper form and usage, along with recordings from actual instrument players. More showing of how dedicated and talented Kyoani is as a studio.
Obviously, I do not own the rights to this video, I am purely giving a means for people to relive or experience for the first time, an important scene from a movie from an important company. All rights belong to Kyoto Animation, Eleven Arts, and Pony Canyon. Any ads you get on this video will be paid to said companies. They reserve the right to take this video down if they please, so if you see this video disappear at some point, you know why.

Always loved how Nozomi, the free spirit, was framed as the bluebird until the end where you realize that Mizore is the one that needs to fly free. This is my favorite anime film.

After rewatching the movie, I realized that Mizore and Nozomi didn't actually switch roles as Liz and the Bluebird. I think instead, I believe that Mizore was *always* the bluebird! At the start, she is shown to have always been following Nozomi, like a chick following her parent. Then, at the end, Mizore starts taking the lead, and they walk side-by-side as equals.

Not exactly a side character from another anime but side characters from the series Sound! Euphonium (and this movie is a side story from that). 🙂 In other words it's all part of the same narrative.

"Because the blue bird loves Liz so much, so if Liz tell her to leave, she will leave." To those who don't understand why Nozomi cries, it is because until than she realized Mizore has more potential than her. And Mizore had always been holding back her potential. Watch the anime to learn more, it is a 10/10 film.

@josefpaolo

Not only that, but the movie actually has a juxtaposition between who is Liz and who is the Blue bird between Mizore and Nozomi. At the start of the film, it seems like Mizore is Liz who doesn't want to let go of Nozomi who is an anchor to her emotionally as a friend. But as the story progresses, its actually the opposite wherein Nozomi being Liz restricting Mizore's progress and improvement because of her over-reliance to her emotionally. And in this scene, we now see the climax where Liz lets go of the Blue bird, to let it soar free; Nozomi letting go of Mizore, and Mizore deciding to soar away from Nozomi. 10/10 film! I think Under The Scope has a wonderful breakdown of the movie and I fully suggest to watch it. (he also has other breakdowns of Hibike Euphonium too)

Mizore is the perfect embodiment of "the quiet kid" Who has a talent. And Nozomi is just "the hardworker" Who try so hard to match with the talented one. It even says in the first 5 min of the movie that Mizore hope that "the day they perform on the stage doesn't come" It probably means she still want to be on the same level as Nozomi, but eventually the blue bird is leaving and being her true color.

My first band director way back in 5th grade was an oboist, and she loved anime. I had wanted to learn the Bassoon, but back then covid was going on so we only got pick between the trumpet, flute, & clarinet due to virtual learning. My band teacher told me to pick whatever my heart desired, and next year she would teach me Oboe so I could have some experience on a double reed instrument, so I could switch to Bassoon in 7th grade. Later in the year, our director told us that she has been fighting cancer for a long time, and that she needs to focus on her healing right now. She left us with a substitute, and she told us "I'll see you soon, and don't worry Kabir - I'll make sure I teach you Oboe". We were very close. Later in the year, we found out from our homeroom teacher that the band director died of cancer, and I was absolutely devastated. I'm starting high school now, and I've been playing all of the brass section up until now. I want to switch to Oboe, and I want to play this piece, for her. Wonderful movie!

I always interpreted this scene not only as if Nozomi was feeling sad for holding Mizore back but also as a hit to Nozomi's self-esteem. I think watching Mizore play so freely made her feel inferior and she built her identity as a protective individual towards Mizore until that point. Mizore not only fed this attitude holding herself back but it also helped set the idea that they were equally skilled. I think that deep down Nozomi knew this but didn't work as hard in her music skills because she was comformed with being seen as Nozomi's protective figure, hence on equal or higher ground than her. That's why she tried desperately to catch up to her musically saying without much thought that se wanted to study music as well. Of course this is only one aspect of Nozomi's characters since she also cares for Mizore deeply but that's why her behavior is so confusing at the climax of the movie. She's trying to concilliate a new world because the old one suddenly shattered in the form of a beautiful song about breaking free.

Imagine how much effort they put just to make this scene. Director need to convey their purpose to key designer, then cooporate with brass member. Brass member also need to play according to the character feeling that director instructed. Not only short version (8min to 3min) of Liz and Blue bird 3rd movement, but there just too many adjusted music notes to match the key design that key designer requested. Especially that nozomi cut off notes at 3:19 just plainly brilliant.

I am a writer. Ten years ago, I met another writer, my best friend, and the great love of my life. I don't remember who said hi first, but the two of us spent every possible moment writing together, telling stories together, creating lives and worlds together. I love her, so much. I would do anything to be with her, FOR her. She's so smart, so amazing. A natural born leader. She has this amazing power to gather people around her and organize them into something so fun and so beautiful, and I long for the chance to give her the world just to see what she would do with it. But when she's away, or doing other things with other people without me, I get lonely. She would tell me though, that I was too nice to her, that I deserved a life without her, that she was bringing me down, and that I need to continue my writing on my own so I can spread out in ways I never could with her. She believed that she was bad for me. I have never once believed her. I still don't. However, she has bought into this idea that she's the selfish one, that she's the one who has caged me, instead of the other way around, which, during my own struggles with self-loathing, I have never been able to even comprehend. Could *I* be the one that needs to fly away? But I am starting to see things differently, ten years later. Perhaps, if I love her, I should respect her wishes and be who I am meant to be without her. I just hope she can do the same and be happy, because, if I am being honest with myself, all I really want is for her to be happy again. Perhaps me accepting that she is letting me go will help my dream become reality. I think we both need to properly let each other go. We are both Liz, and we are both the bluebird.

I haven't seen the movie yet -- that's to be tonight, with my daughter -- but the show was amazing. KyoAni never, *ever* disappoints. I noticed in this scene, they even captured the tiny little clicks of the keys closing on the oboe, which would only be audible to the player herself and for maybe 3-4 feet from her.

The two main characters in this movie also feature in an arc of the series Sound! Euphonium (this movie is a spin-off from that) - to be more precise, they feature in a few episodes of season 2. So if you plan to watch the movie then I'd advise watching the TV series first even though the two characters don't appear until season 2. Yes, the movie can be watched on its own but you'll get a lot more from it if you watch the TV series first (so far there are two seasons, this movie and another, with a new theatrical OVA due out first in Japan this year, 2023, then a new series 3 in 2024). Note that the art style used in Liz and the Blue is different from the TV series and the other main movie.

nozomi built a toxic relationship but the other girl made it a completely different feeling than expected
@raphaelchristianababon4490

Well, look at it this way. Mizore is one of Nozomi's many friends, in Mizore's case, Nozomi was one of the people who introduced her to band, music, and oboe, in which case, Mizore holds Nozomi close. Now, looking at this in Nozomi's side, again, Mizore is one of her many friends, this also doesn't mean that Nozomi is toxic for casting her aside, she just have other friends to entertain aside from Mizore. In that sense, both can be considered selfish, Nozomi for being dismissive of Mizore and Mizore wanting to keep Nozomi for herself and isolating herself from people who care for her aside Nozomi. I'd say that calling their relationship toxic is far fetched, both just misunderstood aspects of their relationship which is why the story centered on trying to understand each other's feelings.

@@raphaelchristianababon4490 I think deep down Nozomi knew Mizore wanted to stay by her side and kind of monopolize her/is dependent on her (hence her surprise at her inviting Ririka to the pool and doing so well at the oboe). A big part of Liz and the Blue Bird is how they keep switching roles as they get closer to graduation and eventually, have to take different paths. But, I think, in the end, they realize that graduation isn't the end all be all. Nozomi realizes exactly how much she means to Mizore and is slowly starting to take a look at her own feelings about everything (Mizore being better than her, Mizore only being interested in things because of her) instead of ignoring it, eventually culminating in her interrupting Mizore's confession and telling her she loves her oboe, signaling that she won't stop her from leaving her. TLDR: Mizore was just terribly dependent on Nozomi and Nozomi wasn't ready to encourage her until the end. Mizore didn't mean for it to become toxic, but she understood that Mizore couldn't stay dependent on her if they wanted to have an equal relationship (and was satisfied by the change, if her happiness when she noticed Mizore was right behind her (as opposed to social distance feet away) is anything go by)
