Much though I love Chad Mitchell Trio, this was originally an old vaudville-music hall song as was "Hang on the Bell, Nelly". Both would probably be utterly lost now were it not for these brilliant lads.
"lizzie borden took an axe" *people laugh* me: ....... "and gave her mother 40 whacks" *people laugh* me:?????? "--she gave her father 41" *people laugh* me: ARE YOU KIDDING ME
To call her a murderer would cost you a fortune if she was still alive. The verdict wasn't "not proven" it was "not guilty". And there were good reasons for that. But the song is funny.
There have always been questions about this case. In spite of the 'not guilty' verdict many ppl have long believed that she did it. Aspects of her version of what happened just don't add up. Having worked in law enforcement one thing I learned is that when someone keeps changing their story they're hiding something. Her story changed more than toilet paper rolls in a public bathroom. But back then it was really hard for ppl to believe a woman could do such a thing. But they could. And they did.
On this day in 1893 {June 20th} Lizzie Borden was found innocent of the 1892 ax murders of her father & step-mother in Fall River, MA {the jury deliberated for only an hour and a half}... Ms. Borden passed away on June 1st, 1927 at the age of 66... May she R.I.P., if she was really innocent???
Juries cannot issue a verdict of "innocent." They can only give a verdict of "not guilty," which means the state did not prove its case. That said, I doubt anyone here has any evidence of her guilt that the state lacked.
The song was written by Michael Brown for "New Faces of 1952", where both Paul Lynde. Aluce Ghostly and Eartha Kitt (introducing the song 'Santa Baby') made their debuts and Mel Brooks wrote and performed
The movie with Elizabeth Montgomery is based on what they knew from the court records and speculation. There was no blood on Lizzie's clothes and the murder weapon had no fingerprints since it was burnt in the furnace. The speculation comes in that Lizzie stripped and then washed herself off. This was depicted in the movie. At the time, forensics was very primitive compared to today. As Jacob Bruinsma said, a lack of evidence. As a side note, this is the only movie, to the best of my knowledge, where Elizabeth Montgomery did any nudity in her entire career.
@pattisgirls Yes it is. It was an autopsy photo. They performed the initial autopsy in the dining room. They have a copy of the photo on display in the Borden house, which is now a Bed and Breakfast.
That chick was a real cut-up! The whole thing was an axident! Seriously, on the same album, the trio does "Green Grow the Lilacs." If at all possible, would you post that song, as nobody seems to have done so? Thank you.
I watched the Christini Ricci version yesterday and the thought crossed my mind that Emma might have actually been the guilty party. glad to hear I'm not alone in my theory.
Now it wasn't done for pleasure And it wasn't done for spite, And it wasn't done because the lady wasn't very bright. She had always done the slightest thing that Mom & Pop had bid, They said, "Lizzie, cut it out!" So that's exactly what she did..
Gotta hand it to whoever put this video together. Using actual photographs of the Borden murder, combined with the Mitchell Trio's macabre but funny classic makes for grisly, yet fun, viewing, at the same time. Did she do it? And, if she did, was it because of resentment against her father and stepmother, or (as Evan Hunter, for one, has theorized) because she was caught in the midst of an same-sex indescretion? The world will never know.
this is so messed up. but it's so catchy. BUT IT'S MESSED UP! *moral dilemma* god it's going to get stuck in my head and im going to accidently sing it at school I just know it. TAT
Very funny, though very inaccurate. Lizzie's real name was Lizzie, not Elizabeth. Mrs. Borden was murdered first and received "only" nineteen blows. Mr. Borden received "only" ten--and he WAS wearing shoes! Yes, I think she did it. I have stayed at the house often, once in the murder room! It's a surprisingly charming house. The Chad Mitchell Trio recently recorded the song at the house! Perhaps it's on this site.
On this day in 1892 {August 4th} Andrew & Abby Borden were murdered in Fall River, Massachusetts; their daughter Lizzie was accused of committing the crime but was later acquitted... Seventy years later on January 27th, 1962 the Chad Mitchell Trio entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart with the song "Lizzie Borden"; eventually it peaked at #44 and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... "Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. And when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41."
@Totaly14 - The photographs are historical records. Besides, I asked the victims that if they minded to let me know. I'm still waiting for an answer. I don't think they care.
the psychic silvia brown stated on the montell williams show that lizzie was bi-polar, and did it in a rage. maybe abby found lizzie and the maid together in a compromising situation.. never know!!
So? there was a fair trial and the verdict was "innocent". The "law" in Massachusetts needed a conviction yet she was acquitted Declared, innocent, not just "lack of evidence" . Strange thing is, in novels she always was and still is portrayed as a monster. So, legally this is slander - but it's funny. I don't think she did it. She just planned it.Might be wrong on both. Messed up?
Well, the law says you're only innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, so the converse would seem to be tghat if you're proven not guilty in a court of law, then you're not innocent. . . I'm pretty sure Lizzie's not too concerned with what anyonethinks of her at this point -- that's the one beauty of death(that & cheating your creditors & making yuor life insurance pay out!)
What if she did do it? If she hit her father & step-mother from behind with the axe, they might not even had seen who it was that killed them. Especially if her father was sleeping & her step-mother was caught by surprise while doing work upstairs. If Lizzie did do it, she sure had enough motive. She hated both of them & wouldn't even call her step-mother Abby. She'd only call her Mrs. Bordon. She had a sense of hatred for them & I think if she did do it she's the only one who knows.
Guys yes she did do it already the found her clothes a few years after the trial with blood on them that they didn't find otherwise she would of been convicted
Thanks to the artists and to you, Kalypso87 for a great post! I have included it in the Arnold Galleries, goo.gl/WTkNmI where I display a Victorian trade card which shows Lizzie's contemporaries acquiring carry-over skills.
@MrBastilleDay eh...it is. I have no problem with this song, I think it's hilarious, but I just think it's disrespectful to actually show the real crime scene photos. How could you think its not?
actuallly you are both right both terms are acceptable although after the women's movement it became somewhat politically incorrect for a time such as distinguishing comic comedienne used in present tense the former is acceptable [actress singer [note i did not say songstress but I could have ;-)] standup comedienne that would be me
