@@JoeMM5 Always been a bass player in my head (drums in reality) but I'd say she's largely the reason for my recent purchase...Not ashamed to say, picked up one just like hers!
I remember when I saw your comment and thought it was funny because she did really good, but I never listened to the original. Besides the chorus, she literally gave it a bassline.
4 years later, Julia's cover is still one of my wake-up grooves. I'm so disappointed when the original comes on the radio, and it doesn't have Julia's bassline.
@@schniemand it's actually 2:39. I think what the first comment meant was that after the crazyness Julia put us through she had to walks us back home, safely, into the chorus 😂 she did it fast and efficiently with a quick lick, it's a minutiae thing - but it's what makes a good thing a great thing
SUB is the entry level version of the Ernie Ball Music Man instruments. I have the guitar version of this bass and it's absolutely incredibly well crafted, I highly recommend.
Ever since the day this was posted, I can't hear the original without hearing every note of this over the top. But ESPECIALLY the triplet rake into the last chorus at 2:39. Such a nice touch.
@@ilikecatsbutimallergictoth1856 Well, I kind of just don't care about talent. When I play, I just listen to my inner ear and 'improvise' according to that
@@gimmforwho_ trve. But try telling that to the vapid, live-fast-sound-shit-on-a-guitar type kids. And I'm even more frustrated by the dis-interest to learn music theory as a drummer and a producer
Meme Thief I didn’t say that you don’t need any knowledge of music to improvise. Of course you do. But you need somewhat of talent too, and you can’t be tone deaf. You probably have talent if you can just improvise by ear.
I am literally using these videos as medicine for my COVID-lockdown depression. Something about the crunchiness of these bass lines helps restore my balance
Amateur Menace I encourage you to listen to the b-side of the single, an official remix by Breakbot. The bassline is fucking incredible, I hope Julia eventually covers that version too! It’s on Spotify for me, I’d imagine it’s on most streaming platforms. Cheers!
I follow a lot of bass players on RU-vid, including famous and legendary professionals, but you're the one that brings me the most joy with your playing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.
EXACTLY. This is precisely why I classified Julia as one of my TOP TEN bassists of all time- ahead of Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooten and many others. Julia is a natural. No tricks; No gimmicks; No fancy equipment. Just pure pleasure in doing what she does and that makes her excellent. I'd put this young lady up against ANYONE ON THE PLANET and know she'd hold her own against the very best and most likely crush the rest. Talent is one thing; creativity and style are another, but what this young lady has that many great players lack is JOY. She radiants joy and it brightens all of our day whenever we watch her play. That's the magic.
I agree with that. I was surprised watching this video. It seemed that her skills went up from previous videos. It would be nice to see one youtuber who would be consistent in uploading for a few years. Many are, but usually they change the direction into something that is not that important. Others go off the youtube.
@@artofmghow6419 Her 'Skill" increased because she recorded herself in a slower tempo and then sped it up in post. that's why her strumming looks so unnatural. because its not
This is exactly what I said. Julia is as good as, if not better than, many of the world's greatest bass legends, including Larry Graham and Marcus Miller. She's today's Face of The Electric Bass and I'm loving it!!!!
I had not even listened to the original and when I realized this was an original bass line I went to hear the original and it sounded like crap compared to this...
I agree with you and everyone else who agrees with you. Never heard the song before hearing this , i listened to it but I like this better with that awesome bass.
Julia, this stuff makes grown men cry! You have the most natural gift, such timing, such creativity, technique and fluidity and I'm pretty damn sure you're one of the best bass players of your generation, destined to make a lot of money doing the thing you love doing! Utterly brilliant.
She definitely should be! So much talent and yet so young! She can have a hell of a career as a professional bass player if she wants. She sure deserves it!
In case you guys can't figure out what's so special about this video, it's the fact that she CREATED THIS BASS LINE, then added a ton of clever "fills" (the things she plays between her bass line) that makes this video and this song pop. It's the ultimate combination of Jazz, Pop and Funk, and I daresay no one could have done it better. No one.
This shiznit is off the hook. I was a Bootsy Funketeer growing up and dabbled playing some bass mostly Bootsy and Parliament funk but I was NOWHERE close to this level of musicianship. This girl is a real artist with many hours under her belt. Her runs and fill ins are effortless which is hands down the sign of the serious level of her commitment. I applaud you with a standing ovation.
Damn girl, WHERE. HAVE. YOU. BEEN????!!! I know you cant make them every day (though I wish you could), but it feels like its been forever!I love your vids they are VERY inspirational. Please keep them coming 🙏
I started playing bass 24 years ago. You have mastered stuff in 6 years that took me more than a decade. I bow down with a smile on my face and mad respect.
playing is super-expressive but clean as a whistle. tone is like a good dessert, a perfect mix of smooth and crunchy. your musical ear is obviously exceptional as there's just a totally fluid movement between holding groove down and melodic exploration. mad props and your specs are sick
You're killin' it girl! As a professional saxophonist, I really appreciate the attention to articulation, every fill that was musical as well as its execution, and the unwavering precision of your internal pulse. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I don't play the bass, never even had an interest in bass. But man, this video. I just keep coming back to it, something about it just clicks with me and now it occupies a special place in my music playlist. Very good stuff, Julia. You keep doing what you're doing. It's definitely working.
Honestly, I can’t get enough of this video. She is So. Damn. Good. I have stopped listening to the original because I find it lacking. This is the bass line the original song WISHES it had. Bravo! 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾
It's a good StingRay clone, probably with decent woodwork. The fact is that it's not rocket science to build a good-sounding electric bass. The tech is rather simple and in reality, Fender and MusicMan were also only cooking with water when they created their bass guitars that became legendary. But it was always the musicians that made them shine.
@@x086833 it's amazing how most of the times a beautiful bass sound comes from no eq or processing. Just flat bass sound and you get it. I've experienced that, even with mid-cost bass guitars.
I have to repeat myself: your right hand technique is INSANE! It's like implacable, it's a hammer! Groove and accuracy....... I wish I was able to do the same
WOW!!!!!! This young lady is a beast. She is way beyond her years playing bass. Keep sharing your talent with us. There's no doubt that 417 trolls had their faces melted off. Those of us that survived, enjoyed the show! Go Julia, go!!!
My dad was a studio bassist in Nashville many years ago. I grew up listening to Jamerson tracks he would play me. You have that groove. My pops is tapping his foot in heaven. Good luck with your music career!
So refreshing to see such talent. I hear a lot of influences and a really nice blend of finger/slap/and pluck. I foresee a lot of producers/bands wanting session time!
I got up at 4am this morning to go to work, did and 8hr shift, 1hr bus ride back in to town, worked out, hour bus ride back, cooked dinner and thought I’d check out what RU-vid might recommend me before falling asleep at 10pm. Julie popped up and now it’s been an hour and a half. I have work in 4 and a half hours but can’t stop watching her videos. Will being insanely tired and incoherent at work tomorrow be worth watching all her videos??? YES. IT WILL.
Oh wow! You had so much fun playing this, your body language couldn't hide it. You're on your way to something really big! How long have you been playing the bass Julia?
@@juliaplaysgroove Keep it Up Julia. I just added you to my list of inspirations! I'll get on your level one day. I've been playing for 2 months; but I'm learning quick! Blessings to you! 🌺
@@juliaplaysgroove only 6 years?! Wow, youre great! If you like it or get a chance cover Stevie Wonder "I was made to Love her"... James Jamerson, incredible!
@@lionelmaalikduvalsaint415 I like your way of thinking! A lot of people say "wow, I could never be like that" or "wish I could do that". You know that you'll be as good as her someday and you acknowledge it takes time. Good job and good luck on bass!
i bought a bass guitar a month ago and i can honestly say watching you play was a major influence for that purchase. you have such good rhythm and flow and you have fun when you play! definitely gives me something to strive for in my playing :)
I bought a bass last month not having had one for a couple decades and despite misgivings about money and priorities. I have to say Jasmine was my #1 inspiration for this choice and you #2, but I rather love your musical choices more. Glad I got a bass. Been jonesing for a vid release from you for a while. Keep it up.
Julia, idk if you'll see this because this video is so old already, but I'm immeasurably impressed. Your skill is obvious to all, but the instinct you have to apply those skills is top tier. Wow.
Gosh, I just looked at the log of dates that I changed strings on my basses. I have been playing since 2014. So has Julia. I don't feel that music is a competition, but I know I play ok good. Julia is so advanced and intuitive with this instrument. I am inclined to believe that it is her, and what she has inside. So not everyone who picks up a base for 6 years will play close her ability. Hail Julia!
Not to say I don't like the idea of nice gear in her hands, but I think she has her tone, style, and whole production dialed. She's playing for herself and not a touring stage gig or record deal or even covering a live drummer's volume in a garage. She doesn't need anything she hasn't asked for. At age 19 she is probably able to buy what she wants. In her RU-vid vid presentation, she hasn't asked for fame, followers, patreon donations, conversation, likes, nothing. Julia plays groove.
@@carpediemarts705 Cool. For all we know she's a dedicated trainee doctor, or whatever. This may be just a hobby to her. Maybe why she doesn't upgrade the bass.
I’ve never played bass and I’m shit at guitar so I wouldn’t be the best judge, but goddamn if it doesn’t look like you’re having the time of your life. I love the feeling I get when I’m playing a hard riff and just having fun, and you really let that show through your expression and playing.
