They’re saying the flute (which most didn’t even know about before all this) should be respected, BUT that’s what she did. She separated the fact that a Slave Owner and Supporter of the 3/5 Compromise owned the flute and she respected the instrument as its own part of history and said how cool it was, not to mention she actually knows how to play it lol And if she was like “Nah I ain’t playing that racist owned instrument” then they would’ve had a meltdown too. So just another case of: “Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t” 🤷🏻‍♂️

Honestly seemed like a desperate stunt by this administration to boost popularity. This flute has officially never been played before. So simply by playing it the value of it has dropped like a rock. It's like opening the package of a rare comic, figurine, etc. That kills it's value because it is now no longer pristine. It would of been fine if it was like an official event with proper respect given to the historic artifact and the significance of it being played but there was little respect given. It was a 2 second "here you go tarnish this artifact and shake your ass on stage while you do it." I don't care if Lizzo was the one to play it but proper respect must be given. I would have preferred they they prepped the artifact to be properly played then Lizzo in proper attire like a dress or something and played it for a full song. The way they went about it was just pointless, half backed, and seemed like a stunt to boost the Biden admins rep with young voters.

Touching piano keys is a lot different than saying "oh well hope I don't get any lipstick on this" and then putting your mouth on something. Like maybe you should have taken your lipstick off since you aren't supposed to be getting anything on a museum item...It's also much different than transporting said item out of the museum and increasing the risk of damage ten fold. I'm not sure how people aren't seeing these common sense differences and solely focusing on race/weight etc. That goes for both sides by the way, so don't start with the "well they did it too" defense.

As a young historic preservationist and aspiring conservationist, I was so glad to see that a conservationist brought the flute it on stage and every effort was made to properly handle the piece of history. I even felt moved by not only Lizzo's passion and excitement for history and making history but her sharing of her passions. It was a huge breath of fresh air after Kim Kardashian wrecked Marlyn Monroe's dress for a 15 second spotlight. A dress that was never meant to be worn by anyone else; a dress that was literally sewn onto her body now forever stretched, torn, and sweat stained.

The fact that they all home in on her body just shows how little substance their arguments have. They, literally, have no objective angle to criticize the whole situation, given nobody knew about that dumb flute before this happened. So all they can do, without immediately calling themselves out as racist, is saying that she is on the bigger end and connect that somehow to the whole situation "being bad". And the problem is: it works, given their target audience is allergic to thinking for themselves.

Then people are mad at the "right" for saying it represents something other than a woman playing a flute...when the entire purpose of this stunt was because the flute represented something. It's hypocritical. And you don't have to dislike Lizzo to find this whole thing a complete misuse of items by the handlers. (Not lizzo, she just took an opportunity, it's not her duty to keep the items safe, but this is exactly why we don't let the public handle items like this)

@@Movs. It means something in the context of American history, but in the big picture, who cares that she utilized an inanimate object that the vast majority of Americans never cared about until now. You can choose to be offended by this but nobody is technically a victim here lol. Her using it raised awareness for the object and watching her play the flute as an instrument in general was impressive. Kind of reminds me of collectors that never take out figurines from their boxes. If a certain collector gave someone permission to take the item out of its box and use their item, who else should give a damn. Even if it's limited edition, one of a kind, at the end of the day it's just an item made by humans to be used by humans. She didn't destroy it, she didn't steal it to play it, I have no idea why people are getting triggered here honestly. Wanna talk about disrespect for our country? Is this not the same crowd that stormed the capitol? The same crowd that toys with human rights and of which the majority approves of Roe v Wade being overturned? I remember when people got offended about statues of slave owners being removed too. Getting this offended over objects? Yikes. Yeah, I'm sure it's all about preserving history, cause that's what modern Americans truly care about in this day and age.

@@soobinism What I don't agree with is museum items being used as props or being taken from display cases likely what would be against the donators wishes by the people who were entrusted with it's safety. And any time that happens I'll be saying the same thing. You cannot replace something that has meaning and antique value, it's whole value comes from the fact it is not replaceable. I see no positives in risking taking things from their cases to be used at a concert as a 5 second gimmick. Also I'm not American, odd assumption there. Which is probably the reason why I actually have respect and care for old valuable items whether they come from my culture or not. Unlike you yanks who have no problem acting like buffoons with little respect for culture in the countries they travel to. Apparently you guys care so little for these matters you can't even trust your own museum workers to do the one job they have. Look don't touch...for the items that come from their own culture let alone other peoples. Giving the public access to items like this is never a good standard to set. It only takes one person who feel likes they want to make a statement to wreck something. Which is exactly why precious paintings, artifacts etc will always be kept behind glass by proper handlers no matter how famous someone is. People who have no anger at the meaning of the item or the person who owned it will still try and destroy property to make a statement even if that statement has nothing to do with the item. Look at what happened just a few weeks ago with the two protestors throwing fluid on a famous painting at a museum. It's not a good precedent to remove precious items from display cases for the public to touch, I don't care how famous they are. That shouldn't grant some unique privilege, even workers should not touch things with their bare hands and move them as little as possible. That's all my point is. I'm glad nothing bad happened here, but it's not safe to transport things like this to a concert or anywhere, especially to someone who's not even expecting it and isn't properly prepared to handle the item. That's great that nothing bad happened this time, but if it did now then the flute is broken. I don't think this is a good precedent to set, that's all. The fact that people are trying to justify it because the original owner had slaves really shows they don't understand the problem here. I don't care if it's something that belonged to a horrible dictator responsible for the deaths of millions, it should be left in the case for people to look at, not touch. Because if anything happens to it then the people who come after us do not get the experience of seeing it for themselves.

@@Movs. I'm gonna guess by the 'we' in your comment that you have worked with museum items before. This seems to be a matter of your personal experience guiding your feelings. As a layman, let me tell you that taking this item out of storage meant absolutely nothing to me compared to the emotions that were stirred when I saw Lizzo perform, especially her longer performance off stage. The H3 cast here felt the same as me. Any object only has as much value as we decide it has, the object was taken with permission from the curators, the object was treated respectfully, from my POV (and I'd argue even objectively), you and everyone else that is angered by this are hugely overreacting. I still stand by the statement, it's an item made by humans to be used by humans. It's an instrument, it's meant to be played. Y'all are acting like she wiped her ass on stage with the Constitution. It's not that fragile of an item, and it was used for its originally intended use. It has more value being used than left lying around being preserved for as long as possible. The flute was passed around and in use by kings and such people before, what difference does it really make. Did royalty have crystal-preserving fingers? Preserving such items is a matter of human ego, anyway. Mother Nature won't care if someone breaks the flute in half tomorrow. You and I will be healthy and alive even if someone grates the flute down to dust and snorts it. Most of what humans consider to be extremely important is inherently meaningless. So everyone that's angry or worried over this needs to take a deep breath and re-frame their mindset. This literally has zero effect on your life.

People remarking on politicization wouldn't be them politicizing it. The politicizing came in when they wanted to do this stunt because it was a black person playing a slave owner's flute. Ignoring the fact it's disrespectful to take an item like this for a 2 second gimmick on stage that not one person in the audience cared about musically. Whether you agree with Madison's way of life of not, he personally would be disrespected by this, so by definition it's disrespectful. Even if you personally do not respect the way he lived his life, it's irrelevant. You're purposing doing it because it's something he wouldn't have wanted.
