I had this record back in 85. I loved the minimal, stripped down sound of early-mid 80's rap. By the late 80's, producers were moving away from this sound and using samples and breakbeats. That's when I got out of it. To each their own. I just fell in love with the raw sound of a drum machine, bass synth (this song is so minimal, it doesn't even have a bassline!) the DJ cutting and scratching, and the MC. No frills, just the sound of the street. 82-86 will always be hip-hop to me.
@@ari.3455 true indeed but I was referring to the discovery aspect of your post. Had it not been for Fox honing Ls skills, there would be no def jam signing. Nuff respect everytime!
Whomever dislikes this has no idea of context. This is one of hip hop's greatest creations ever. Unforgettable to those of us who were rocked by this innovation back in the day.
The Goat first to go Platinum on def jam period LL set the tone for which Hip-hop is built on today we got away from the beat but we're getting it back thanks LL for your raw gritty sound.
Couldn't stand cypress hill was always LL beasties run dmc ericb n rakim Shantelle Roxanne Roxanne really early grandmaster flash was sampled a million times anyway cypress hill shouldn't even be thought of within this genre.
OLD SCHOOL RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS IN THE 5TH GRADE WHEN THIS DROP AND KNEW ALL THE LYRICS LIKE IT WAS MY EASTER SPEEECH! MY MOM ENCOURIDGE US BY GETIIN THE ALBUM FOR US!!!!!! SHE SAID IF YOU LEARN THAT SONG YOU CAN LEARN ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO!!!! THANKS MOM, LOVE YOU DEARLLY!!!!!!!!!!!
Who else still listening to this heat in 2020 besides me!? Listening to this takes me back to a classic time in Hip Hop. The culture alone was special! #FineWine #Nostalgia #TheFoundation
Yeah it a shame ,, he put in works…back in days.. i remember when i was heard radio.. oh man everyone was pumping that of the 15 inch speakers driving around in summer
Well said. I completely forgot about Rubin. The guy deserves a ton of credit for shaping hip hop, and refining its edge. He really broke from the disco sounding styles, and introduced to the clubs the punk and rock influenced beats. L.L. only needed that opening to become the legend we know today.
beautiful vinyl classic, LL Cool J best rap hip hop artist of all times, the philosopher of hip hop as a lifestyle not just a trend that's why LL will forever be the best.
Got to work. Looked up at the tv and saw LL on one of his tv shows and thought to myself “man ive never heard a LL song in my life” . Went to his Wikipedia page and now im here.
Word, I really miss them real hip hop days too. Man just listen to the raw sound of this song. The beat the cuts and the rhymes are just 100% pure uncut hip hop.
Here it is on Jan 3rd, 2020 I'm watching NCIS LA with LL Cool J on screen as I'm listening to this on RU-vid with my laptop open to a Wikipedia page about him. Now it all makes sense.
T La Rock was the shit !!! I used to mistaken his and LL songs when this came out around 1984. They damn near sounded the same and almost the same lyrical style
Thee actual G.O.A.T. when it comes to Real RAP, Rhythm And Poetry, and I was there to witness it. Have your list and charts in 2022. We didn’t need or care about them in my day. #RealHipHopStillBreathes 🎤🔥
Ad Rock from the Beastie Boys produced this beat which Rick Rubin used after As Rock discovered LL and said "You need to check out this kid", there's a new clip of LL, Ad Rock and Mike D talking about this together recently ❤️🙏🏼
one of my favorite all time songs - nice to hear the original - ***and note the writing credit - LL, Rick, and "A. Horowitz", a.k.a. Ad Rock from the Beastie Boys. It was cool when Run DMC, LL, and B Boys helped and shared songs, of which there are a few.
A classic LP single from a 16 year old L.L. Cool J but the real originator is still T La Rock for L.L. Cool J is the student of the style. The truth is T La Rock released the first LP single for Def Jam Records in July 1984 called "It's Yours" while L.L. Cool J came out with two LP singles "I Need A Beat" and "Dangerous" released in October 1984 both T La Rock and L.L. Cool J's LP's was produced from Rick Rubin. In 1985 L.L. Cool J released his debut album called "Radio" making a platinum LP.
Rakim fell off honestly, people just remember the old days and the music he was making with Dr Dre was garbage. That single on 8 Mile soundtrack wack. Rakim was good for 2 albums maybe 3 to be nice.
@@davidlangford8213 Emphactically Now Cipher! The God Rakim is the illest to do it. Every single album has mad jewels. If you’re 85% you just won’t get it. Go ask Melle Mel and we know Mel hesitates to give any credit to anyone other than himself!
I saw LL in 1986, and again in 1989. He opened the show in 1986, and closed the show in 1989. In truth he put on a better show in 1986, that '86 show had RUN DMC and other legends on it, but LL was by far the hardest rapper out at the time. In 1989, Eazy E and NWA was on that show among other legends, but LL again was the one with all the hits that everyone knew...
I picked up this 12" on US Import from London's Groove Records when it came out, after hearing it on a local pirate radio station. Still got it and still love it. One of the toughest rap tracks out there.
Andres Pacheco Nope. Sorry. HipHop is Not coming back. if you weren't there when it happened, sorry you missed it. It's simply not coming back. The only consolation is that you can still listen to the treats and artifacts left over from a bygone era.
My dude you are correct in your reference to my dude Silver Fox. Silver Fox Is widely known as the man who taught LL how to rhyme. Fox is the cat that was down with Fantasy Three. They released a classic called It's Your Rock in the early 80s. Fox also mentored and influenced Kool G Rap. They used to battle frequently at an afterhours spot in Harlem called Joe Grants. Let the truth be told and this is a fact, MC Silverfox was so lyrically sound Kool Moe Dee straight avoided this dude.
I'm glad you agree about jazz dunn. I love jazz, and now that you mentioned it, I don't see many black jazz musicians anymore it's a shame. And a lot of brothers aren't into jazz at all, and that's killing hip hop too. Nas, Rakim, etc, even said it themselves their roots in music started with jazz, blues, etc.
Knew the story about Rick & LL... knew the story about Ad Rock interning for Rick & hearing LL's demo that prompted them to call him... but I did not know Ad Rock (Horowitz) is literally credited on the album for production. Cool.
When this song first came out in 1984 I heard it on DJ Red Alert kiss Fm Radio show. I went crazy. At first I thought it was T-LA-Rock because it sounded similar to his song called Its Yours. So after Red Alert finished playing this song he said its from a new artist called L.L. Cool J called I Need A Beat. So the next day I went to the record shop and bought this 12" Single. I still have this single. But you can find lots of old hip hop from London England.
i used to do this beat as one of my beatbox beats when i was a teenagert during beat box battles. i took em out with this one everytime. lololol. SUCH GREAT MEMORIES!!!
Thank you so much for clearing that up. It's Yours was a real hip hop master piece. I remember when Red Alert first played it on 98.7 kiss Fm, I was like WTF, this shit is smoking. The next day I went to the WIZ downtown Brooklyn and got 2 copies. I couldn't stop listening to it. And I still have them to this day on Wax.
mrpower328....I have been looking for this version FOREVER dawg.....thanks to you I've found it....this is waaay better than the remix version by far...this reminds me of the countdown on 98.7 kiss-fm...just extremely BANGIN hip-hop right here...thanks man!
I still own this 12" single, purchased locally from a place called Record Bar, which would sometimes after-market discarded/unwanted DJ demos. This disc is the same on both sides. I sure did love this one, back in the day. I wonder what it's worth nowadays.
MC Silver Fox was honored this past July 27th 2012 in New York at The Legends Of Hiphop Awards show part 2 sponsored by Tito of the fearless four. T La rock was also honored as well as others. For the record Fox is still doing Music. He has a joint out now called Off The Planet. RU-vid it.
